Mbappe, PSG set for Club World Cup reunion as Real Madrid eye final

eNCA11 hours ago
US - Kylian Mbappe will come up against Paris Saint-Germain for the first time since leaving the French club a year ago as Xabi Alonso's Real Madrid revolution gets its biggest test yet in Wednesday's Club World Cup semi-final.
Mbappe should be remembered as a PSG legend, having spent seven prolific campaigns there and eventually departing as their all-time top scorer with 256 goals in 308 games.
But his legacy was a little tainted by the manner of his departure, the sense among many that for the last half of his time in Paris he was just waiting for the right moment to move to Madrid, the club he had dreamed of representing as a young boy.
PSG, under their Qatari president Nasser al-Khelaifi, were not happy with the way in which Mbappe chose to run down his contract in order to sign for Real in 2024, denying them a transfer fee.
A bitter legal dispute has gone on between the parties for much of the time since, with Mbappe claiming he is owed 55 million euros ($64.4 million) in unpaid wages and bonuses from his spell in Paris.
The latest twist came just this week, when one of Mbappe's lawyers told AFP that the France captain had withdrawn a complaint of moral harassment against his former employers.
That was after the Paris prosecutor's office revealed last month that an investigation had been opened following a complaint by the player over the way he was treated by PSG in the summer of 2023.
He believes he was sidelined by PSG and made to train with players the club were looking to offload after refusing to agree a new contract.
Mbappe missed a pre-season tour to Japan and the start of the next campaign before eventually being reintegrated into Luis Enrique's squad.
All of that should have been behind Mbappe long ago, given the way his first season at Real has gone on a personal level.
The 26-year-old, a World Cup winner in 2018, scored 43 goals in 56 matches for his new club across all competitions up to the end of the campaign in La Liga, a remarkable tally.
However, Mbappe has endured frustration at the Club World Cup, not featuring at all during the group stage due to a stomach bug which led to him requiring hospital treatment.
- First start? -
In his absence, young forward Gonzalo Garcia has made the step up in impressive fashion, starting all five matches in the United States and scoring four goals.
The last of those was the opener in the 3-2 quarter-final win over Borussia Dortmund at the MetLife Stadium on Saturday, but it was Mbappe who got what was ultimately the deciding goal.

He came off the bench midway through the second half and scored a brilliant, acrobatic overhead kick for Real's third of the afternoon in stoppage time.
"He is still not perfect, not 100 percent, but he is getting better every day," Alonso said of Mbappe after that match.
'Now he will have three days to keep progressing and feeling better ahead of the semi-final.'
It is hard to imagine Mbappe not getting his first start of the tournament against PSG, the club who won the Champions League in the season following his departure after so many years of disappointment in Europe with him in the team.
PSG came to the US fresh from crushing Inter Milan 5-0 in the Champions League final.
They reached the last four with a 2-0 win over Bayern Munich in Atlanta in the last eight - despite having Willian Pacho and Lucas Hernandez sent off - and need not fear Real.
"It doesn't matter who we play in the semi-finals. All that matters is that we are there and that we want to get to the final," said Luis Enrique, for whom this is also a special occasion given that he spent five years at Madrid as a player in the 1990s.
Alonso has just taken over as Real coach after an outstanding spell with Bayer Leverkusen and has already displayed great tactical flexibility, flitting between a back four and a three-man central defence at the tournament.
It will be fascinating to see which system he opts for here, and if Mbappe starts as he prepares to play against PSG for the first time since July 2017, when he was still a thrilling teenager at Monaco.

Shukri Conrad happy Proteas' youngsters helped 'maintain the standards' in Zimbabwe

Proteas coach Shukri Conrad is excited about how the young talent performed during the Zimbabwe series. Picture: AFP Image: AFP Prior to departing for Zimbabwe after the emotion of scaling their Everest by winning the World Test Championship at Lord's, Proteas coach Shukri Conrad would have made a mental note of the objectives he hoped his team would achieve in the land of Chevrons. Much of it would have been to get his players back to ground zero, and that the youngsters afforded an opportunity in the absence of several starters from the WTC Final would take their chances to deepen the talent pool that Conrad has to select from for the prospective tougher contests in the subcontinent later this year. The boxes were duly ticked with Conrad pleased his team maintained their high-performance levels throughout both Test matches. 'I think the important and the most impressive thing for me was how we managed to keep the standards as high as we set them - both the first Test and the second Test,' Conrad said after the innings and 236-run victory in the second Test at the Queens Park Oval on Tuesday. 'Batting first, we found ourselves in a little bit of trouble against the new ball and then how the youngsters, Lhuan-dre (Pretorius) and Brevi (Dewald Brevis) managed that in the first Test. And the same in the second, we found ourselves in trouble and then Wiaan played a monumental knock. 🚨 MATCH RESULT 🚨 A complete performance from start to finish. Absolute dominance from Day 1 to Day 3 💪🔥🇿🇦 The Proteas men wrap up the second Test in style and seal a commanding 2-0 series victory! 🏏👏 #WozaNawe — Proteas Men (@ProteasMenCSA) July 8, 2025 Video Player is loading. 'And then obviously the catching … It again is something that we attach a high value to and the way we, in the field, we were really, really good as well. So that was particularly impressive for me.' There were numerous individual performances that would have caught Conrad's attention - most notably Pretorius' 235 runs and seamer Codi Yusuf's 10 wickets - and the coach certainly feels they are now part of the discussions moving forwards. 'Lhuan is a special talent without wanting to jump the gun. I think it's hard to ignore what he's done here,' Conrad. 'He's definitely in the discussion for the subcontinent later. 'And Cody, I mean, you can see Cody, you can see the value of a really good domestic season. You can see the value of a short stint with Durham in the county set up. 'He's completely, well I'm not saying completely, but he's certainly a lot more disciplined, really good skill set and hugely impressive again. And we talk of gaining a measure of control. He certainly gives you that with a new ball and he set the tone for us.' Undoubtedly, Conrad would have taken greatest pleasure from stand-in skipper Wiaan Mulder's success at No 3 though. The coach had come in for criticism after opting for the allrounder at first drop in the WTC Final, but he had seen enough in the second innings against Australia's much-vaunted pace attack to persevere with Mulder. Five-hundred-thirty-one runs later, including a highest-ever Test score of 367 not out by a South African - has everyone now singing Mulder's praises. 'I'm thrilled that he was able to turn in a performance like he did with the bat,' Conrad said. 'It wasn't long ago when people weren't quite sure whether he should even be in the side - let alone batting at No 3. 'It's amazing how the conversations have changed now. I'm really thrilled for Wiaan and I'm sure Wiaan is a really happy man now as well.' Conrad and the Proteas will now switch their focus to white-ball cricket with a T20 Tri-Series, featuring the hosts and New Zealand, starting on Monday in Harare. Exclusive: Hendricks' mentoring of Mulder helped elevate his game

Proteas captain Wiaan Mulder scored a record-breaking, unbeaten 367 on Day 2 of the second Test against Zimbabwe at Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo — the highest individual score by a South African in Test history. Photo: AFP WHEN Wiaan Mulder's professional career started, he was still a high school student at St Stithians. His skill was good enough to start his professional career with the Lions. However, at 18 years old at the time, Mulder had a long way to go and entering the Lions dressing room would have been intimidating for any youngster. Mulder needed a mentor, an experienced Lions player that would take him under his wing and show him the ropes as a professional cricketer. Lions captain, Dominic Hendricks, became that mentor for Mulder. In an exclusive interview with Independent Media, Hendricks highlighted how Mulder's preparation was undercooked when he burst onto the professional set-up and how their chat helped him (Mulder) raise his training standards to meet what is required to succeed at the highest level. "I think the biggest thing was someone needed to mentor him and at the time, walking into the dressing room basically as a high school kid, you don't really know where to look. We found a lot of commonality in a lot of areas, and I think that's where the friendship started," Hendricks told. "Just getting him through figuring out what he needs to do at training was a big thing because you could see he was still training like a kid, where there was no real purpose behind training. He'd rock up and he'd get out a couple of times and he'd walk out of training. "I actually distinctly remember telling him one day, and I think he still mentions it to a lot of people today, that we had this one session and he just got out about six times and I just asked him, 'Are you satisfied with that? Are you proud of how you trained?' "And he just looked and was like, 'What do you mean?' And I was like, 'well, if you're going to train like that, then you're going to have no chance'. 'I mean, you got out six times. It's not a great reflection of sort of what you're trying to do and what standards you're trying to set'. "I think ever since that day, his training has changed massively and he's held his training to a very high standard."

The exciting duo of Grant Williams and Manie Libbok will start as scrumhalf and flyhalf, respectively. In a surprising midfield, Canan Moodie partners with André Esterhuizen to complete the backline. Moerat will resume the captaincy duties. There is still no sign of regular skipper Siya Kolisi, who missed the previous two games through injury, as the Boks manage their leader. Erasmus also named three uncapped players, tighthead prop Asenathi Ntlabakanye, utility forward Cobus Wiese and utility back Ethan Hooker, as part of a five-three replacement bench split. Wiese could run out with his World Cup-winning brother Jasper when he takes to the field, and they will become the 37th brother-pairing for the national side. 'Willie has been a stalwart for us in the last few years after making his debut against Italy in Durban in 2013, and he's a fantastic playmaker, so we are thrilled to see him achieve this incredible feat,' Erasmus said about the playmaker's 100th match. 'Only seven players in Springbok history have played 100 Tests before him, and to reach this milestone is testament to the player and team man that Willie is. Having come a long way with him during his career, I have no doubt that he'll put the team before his own achievements this weekend, and as a team we would certainly like to make it a special and memorable occasion for him.' 11 players who are yet to feature for the Boks in 2025 included in the 23 for Saturday – and 3 set for their Test debuts.
