Bake Off's Nadiya Hussain hits back at critics after BBC show cancellation

Independent2 days ago

Nadiya Hussain has spoken out against critics who told her to be "grateful" following the cancellation of her BBC cooking show.
In an Instagram video, Hussain asserted her right to feel more than just thankful, including her right to feel anger when treated unfairly.
She explained that she grew up in an immigrant household where gratitude was an expectation, making it hard to express other emotions.
Hussain's collaboration with the BBC spanned a decade since her 2015 Great British Bake Off win, producing various cooking programmes.

Strictly Come Dancing judge compares ITV star to a 'wardrobe' in awkward jibe

Strictly Come Dancing judge compares ITV star to a 'wardrobe' in awkward jibe Lorraine Kelly has ruled out ever taking part in Strictly Come Dancing after a judge's remark about her moves Lorraine recalls Anton Du Beke critiquing her dancing Lorraine Kelly has candidly shared that she wouldn't dare to compete on BBC's Strictly Come Dancing after a disconcerting comparison by one of the show's stars likened dancing with her to "dancing with a wardrobe". In Monday's edition of her popular ITV chat show, Lorraine welcomed Emmerdale's latest addition Jaye Griffiths, who plays the straight-talking farmer Celia in the renowned soap. ‌ As the conversation veered towards potential reality TV ventures for Jaye beyond Emmerdale, Lorraine queried: "If you're going to start doing shows, SAS would you do that one?" To which Jaye openly responded: "Yes, in a heartbeat. I love it because it's pointless, you can't win anything. There is nothing except to hurt yourself." ‌ She elaborated: "It's to see if you have a back bone. Sometimes I watch it and on day one someone will pull out and I think 'what happened instead of your head to give up', would that be me." Lorraine Kelly said she would never appear on Strictly Come Dancing (Image: ITV ) Alex Jones makes big announcement as The One Show dropped from schedules READ MORE: Reflecting on other challenging shows, Lorraine remarked: "Now that I think about it, the scariest one would be Strictly," reports Edinburgh Live. Article continues below She then turned to Jaye with a probing question: "Would you ever do Strictly?" Jaye showed enthusiasm for participating in the dance extravaganza, replying: "Oh yes. I would love to learn those dances." Lorraine confessed: "See I couldn't not in a million years. No, no." A curious Jaye questioned: "Why not, what's scary to you?" Lorraine explained her trepidation: "Everything about it is scary. I would run away. You know when they say 'and now the tango la la la' and I would just go 'no you're alright' and I'll just run away because it's too scary." ‌ Strictly Come Dancing judge Anton Du Beke (Image: BBC ) Lorraine reminisced about a time when Strictly Come Dancing's Anton Du Beke suggested he could teach her to dance, only to have an unfortunate epiphany during their practice session. She recounted: "I always say this but Anton Du Beke one time during a break he said 'I can teach you how to dance' and he said 'stand up, stand up'" ‌ As Lorraine demonstrated their attempt at dancing, she continued the story: "Then he said 'nah, nah' he said it was like dancing with a wardrobe." The studio erupted in laughter following her revelation, with Jaye commenting: "That's mean." Lorraine quickly retorted: "No, no but you would be fantastic." Despite only appearing in one episode, Jaye's character Celia has already made several enemies ‌ Further into the programme, Jaye spoke candidly about her recent venture into Emmerdale as Celia, who, despite being new, has already ruffled feathers. Casting light on another potential antagonist for Celia, Jaye posited that her character could be set to "shake things up" in the iconic village, describing her as "She's (Celia) fierce and complex shall we say." Elaborating on her character's determination, Jaye noted: "She just wants what she wants, and doesn't understand why people don't just give it to her immediately. When you don't give her what she wants, there's part of her that goes, 'Oh, good, we're going to dance then'. Because she knows ultimately she always gets what she wants, and loves the game." The Vivienne died from cardio-respiratory arrest due to ketamine use, inquest finds

The drag artist known as The Vivienne died from misadventure after suffering cardio-respiratory arrest after taking ketamine, a coroner has ruled. James Lee Williams, 32, was found in the bath by a neighbour at their home in Chorlton-by-Backford, Cheshire, on Sunday 5 January. The last time anyone had contact with them was two days earlier, a court was told, when a friend said it was evident the entertainer had taken ketamine. Five drug snap bags were found in The Vivienne's property, including in a bedroom draw and a bin in the bathroom, an inquest at Warrington coroner's court heard on Monday. Although the performer had struggled with drugs in the past, Williams's family told the hearing they should not be remembered for their use of ketamine and that drugs did not define the person they were. Friends and family had no worries about Williams's mental health, the hearing was told, and the performer was looking forward to future roles on TV and in the theatre, although did 'occasionally' take ketamine. Jacqueline Devonish, the senior coroner for Cheshire, concluding the inquest, said: 'The medical cause of death is cardio-respiratory arrest due to ketamine use. The conclusion, on the balance of probabilities, is that I'm satisfied that James Williams's death was a misadventure, he took ketamine but he did not intend to take his own life.' A report from a toxicologist, Dr Kerry Taylor, said tests showed a relatively high level of ketamine, but not at a level normally causing death. However, the drug can cause drowsiness, seizures and heart stimulation, and the concentration may have dissipated over time. Williams was the winner of the first series of RuPaul's Drag Race UK and years later spoke about having been a drug addict. In April, their sister, Chanel Williams, questioned whether the 'stigma' surrounding drug use had prevented them from seeking help. She told the BBC Two current affairs programme Newsnight that The Vivienne did not discuss their relapse, including a hospital stay, to 'protect' their family, after a 'really long period of sobriety'. 'It's hard for me because I think, if that stigma wasn't there, would my brother have sought the help he needed?' she said. 'To think that, if we'd known, or if he'd have felt able to talk and really reach out for the help that was needed, the outcome could've been different. That's why we've shared James's story.' Williams's family have said they would work with the drug charity Adferiad on future campaigns. Their sister has called for ketamine to become a class A drug rather than class B, because people 'think it's less harmful than other drugs'. The government is seeking expert advice as the illegal use of ketamine has surged to record levels.

Blow to Sky viewers as beloved TV feature vanishes – as devastated telly fans brand change ‘hostile'

SKY customers were left astonished after a beloved TV feature vanished in a huge blow to the viewer's experience. The company's decision to remove the feature will impact the user experience going forward. 4 The beauty of a TV guide is soon to be a thing of the past for Sky viewers, after the section on the website has been removed. Change to the Sky user experience Viewers started noticing a change to the website on June 18, when the usually obvious and simple to use TV guide, no longer appeared on the website. What's more, others realised that after using their pre-saved link to the page, automatically redirected to a different landing page. As a result, viewers are no longer able to see what is upcoming in Sky's programming schedule. For many, the website TV Guide or EPG (Electronic Programme Guide) was a useful feature for viewers wanting to plan what they watched without impacting their TV-watching experience or needlessly turning their tele on. Days of frustration ensued, with countless messages in community chats, the viewers questioning went unanswered. Finally, on June 20, a Sky community manager explained to the disgruntled viewers the reason behind the decision. 4 He said: "We want to confirm that the TV guide feature has been discontinued. "We understand this may be an inconvenience, you can find alternative ways to browse and discover content via your Sky Box, Sky Stream, Sky Glass, Sky Go and other parts of the website." Viewers deem it a hostile change But at what first felt like a user error or a website issue, Sky viewers are now left befuddled by the decision to remove the feature. Members of the Sky Community were quick to share their thoughts, with one user writing: "Who's stupid idea was it to get rid of the TV guide? WE WANT IT BACK!" Another said: "Was the online EPG hurting anyone or getting in the way? No, it wasn't. 4 "Was it a useful tool used by many on a daily basis? Yes, it was. Quite literally one of the stupidest decisions made by Sky in recent years." A third shared their frustration: "Not a great move, especially when it feels super hostile to those who still watch linear TV." It is a sentiment shared by long-standing Sky viewers, who had become accustomed to using the feature to enhance their watching experience. Big change at Sky The removal of the website EPG is just one in a long line of changes that viewers have had to deal with in a massive TV guide shake-up. Sky recently decided to permanently close down two beloved TV channels, with viewers only given until July 1 to come to terms with the change. 4 It follows the addition of eight new live channels to Sky's service, as well as a series of name changes to major channels and the move of 31 channels in April. The removal of the website EPG, therefore, only adds to the confusion felt by viewers who can no longer use the feature to discover the new programming released by the provider.
