Tom Cruise to receive honorary Oscar: Is a competitive win still possible?

Hindustan Times7 days ago

Tom Cruise will finally be receiving an Oscar after decades in the film industry. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences had announced earlier this week that he would be given an Honorary Oscar at the 2025 Governors Awards in November, celebrating his lifetime contributions to cinema, Deadline reported. The Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning actor, who at 62 is still one of Hollywood's most bankable and enduring stars, has never taken home a competitive Oscar despite being nominated four times. The Academy said that the honorary recognition is for Cruise's 'extraordinary distinction in lifetime achievement', particularly for his commitment to enriching theatrical experience, to the filmmaking and stunt communities.
Cruise will be honored alongside production designer Wynn Thomas, choreographer and actor Debbie Allen, and Dolly Parton, who will receive the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award.

Although Cruise is being bestowed with the honorary recognition, the big question remains: Will this end the Mission: Impossible actor's chances of winning a competitive Academy Award? Well, history suggests otherwise. Past Oscar winners prove an honorary award doesn't end the race
As per Deadline, actors like Paul Newman and Henry Fonda both received honorary Oscars before they won Best Actor in the very next year. Additionally, Laurence Olivier, who won an Honorary Oscar in 1947, clinched Best Actor two years later. Harold Russell took home both an Honorary and a competitive Oscar in the same year.
Some stars like Peter O'Toole initially resisted the gesture in fear that the honorary accolade was a consolation; they went on to receive further nominations. Moreover, figures outside of acting, like Ennio Morricone and Spike Lee also turned their honorary recognition into competitive wins later.
The Deadline report added that the timing for Tom Cruise may be auspicious, too. The actor is currently filming a project with Oscar-winning director Alejandro G. Iñárritu. The Birdman filmmaker's next project is expected to release next year, which places it squarely in the running for the 99th Academy Awards. Tom Cruise could still find himself holding the elusive golden statue if the performance matches the prestige.
So, while November's honorary award marks long-overdue recognition, it doesn't close the curtain on Cruise's Oscar journey. It might just be the prelude to his biggest role yet, an Oscar winner. FAQs Why didn't Tom Cruise win the Oscar?
Despite four nominations, Tom Cruise has faced tough competition each time. His performances were critically acclaimed, but others edged him out during award season. Why is Tom Cruise getting an honorary Oscar?
The Academy is recognizing Cruise for his lifetime contribution to cinema, including his work as an actor, producer, and champion of theatrical experience. Has Tom Cruise ever been up for an Oscar?
Yes. He has been nominated four times: twice for Best Actor (Born on the Fourth of July, Jerry Maguire), once for Best Supporting Actor (Magnolia), and once as a producer for Best Picture (Top Gun: Maverick).

Grosse Pointe Garden Society cast bids farewell after series cancelled for second season

Washington DC [US], June 29 (ANI): Following the announcement of NBC that the series 'Grosse Pointe Garden Society' would not be back to bloom for a second season, the cast bid a heartfelt farewell to the series. Melissa Fumero, who played society newbie Birdie on the Jenna Bans and Bill Krebs-created series, paid tribute to the character with some behind-the-scenes photos and a statement on Instagram. "This one stings. This job is not for the faint of heart," she wrote Saturday on her Instagram Story, sharing Deadline's reporting of the cancellation. "Thanks for watching our little show," reported Variety. Sharing the snaps from the series, the actress wrote, "Oh, Birdie. You were one for the books. You felt like an amalgamation of every role I've ever played. I'll miss so many things about this job, but most of all I will miss the incredible group of humans it brought together. I won't miss the shoes. It's really hard to make a show. Even harder to keep it on air. I'll forever be proud of what we made. Thanks for watching." Actress AnnaSophia Robb, who starred as high school teacher Alice, wrote with a cast photo on her Instagram Story, "Damn. I will miss our GPGS family. Grateful and proud of all that we made together," as quoted by Deadline. Ben Rappaport, who played divorced father and gardening club manager Brett, shared his own statement with some photos of the cast with Bans and Krebs. "I've said it before and I'll say it again," he captioned the post. "Showbiz ain't for the faint of heart. Our beloved Grosse Pointe Garden Society was cancelled today. I'll sure miss working with these (and all of our) amazing folks every day. This was a special one." On Friday, Deadline exclusively reported that NBC opted not to renew the drama series for a second season, after the network explored the possibility of moving the show to Peacock. (ANI)

Cobra Kai creators reveal they reached out to Hilary Swank for final season cameo

Washington [US], June 29 (ANI): As 'Cobra Kai' brings the 'Karate Kid' universe to a close with its sixth and final season, the show's creators have revealed that they made an effort to bring back a familiar face, Hilary Swank. The two-time Oscar-winning actress portrayed Julie Pierce in 'The Next Karate Kid' (1994), a character who has been absent from the franchise for over three decades. Josh Heald, who co-created the series with Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg, shared in an interview that they reached out to Swank's team early on in the process of developing the final season, according to Deadline. The creators had an idea for how Julie Pierce could fit into the Cobra Kai storyline without requiring a full commitment to the season. "We did reach out in the very early days before the season to see if there was a path [for her to appear]," Heald said in an interview, adding, "We had an inkling of an idea about how she could come into this story and not have to commit to 10 episodes or something," as quoted by Deadline. Heald further explained that they approached Swank's team with a "genesis of an idea" about how Julie could return to the larger 'Karate Kid' universe. They were hoping for an opportunity to meet with her and discuss the potential storyline in greater detail. However, despite their efforts, the creators were unable to secure a meeting with Swank. Heald described the response from the actress as "very respectful" but added that she was not in a place where she was ready to revisit the role. "She didn't want us to go through the trouble of flying out to her and putting our heart on the sleeve," Heald explained, adding, "Because it just wasn't something she was ready to do at that moment," as quoted by Deadline. Despite the missed opportunity, Heald acknowledged that Julie Pierce remains a "big piece of the Miyagi-verse" and is a character they would like to revisit in the future. "For us, it was a little disappointing because we like getting everybody, but at the same time, we didn't sacrifice any huge story that we had fully developed," he said, adding, "It's more fruit on the vine for if we can revisit this universe going forward." The Cobra Kai creators have brought several legacy characters back into the fold during the show's run, including Ralph Macchio's Daniel LaRusso, William Zabka's Johnny Lawrence, and Jackie Chan's Mr. Han from the 2010 Karate Kid reboot. The series, which began as a nostalgic revival of the Karate Kid saga, has proven to be a global hit, blending old and new characters with fresh storylines. With Cobra Kai officially concluding its run, the creators have left the door open for future possibilities in the Karate Kid universe, including the potential return of Julie Pierce. Fans of the franchise continue to hold out hope that Swank may one day reprise her role in a future spinoff or project related to the Miyagi-verse. While the final season of Cobra Kai will not feature Swank's Julie Pierce, the creators expressed optimism that there could be future opportunities to bring her back into the fold. As Heald noted, "We'll see what the future holds." (ANI)
