Boxing world champion clarifies Angel Reese comments with 'hate' admission
Boxing star Claressa Shields has clarified her comments about Angel Reese after being snubbed for the BET Sportswoman of the Year award.
Earlier this month, Chicago Sky WNBA sensation Reese picked up the honour at the awards in Los Angeles, California - marking the third time she has picked up the coveted prize. At 23, Reese is widely regarded as one of the biggest names in women's basketball.
Shields was one of the other nominees for the prestigious award. And after being rebuffed of the award, the 30-year-old was far from impressed and took to social media to express her views. Taking to X - formerly known as Twitter - she posted: "Still don't know how I didn't win the Sportswoman of the Year for the @BETAwards but Congrats to Angel Reese and all the other Nominees. I just thought accolades mattered."
She added: "Ain't nobody saying Angel Reese don't have accolades or she not good…. I'm saying I thought the person with 'THE MOST' accolades & accomplishments would win the Award. I'm team Angel Reese!" Last year, Shields won the WBC, and vacant WBF female heavyweight and WBO female light heavyweight titles with a stoppage win over Vanessa Lepage-Joanisse. Shields then followed it up with a win over Danielle Perkins to win the IBF, WBO and inaugural WBA female heavyweight titles.
She seemingly thought her recent accolades would be enough to pip Reese to the award. Shields received some backlash for her posts. However, the boxing superstar was quick to address her comments and express her adoration for Reese during an interview with Brandon Robinson. 'I'm not angry or salty or any of that,' she said. 'I was just shocked." She further clarified: 'I've won the Women's Sports Foundation Award for Sportswoman of the Year three times—more than any other woman. I think Serena Williams won it twice.
"I went to the ESPYs as the only female boxer to ever win Best Boxer. I have a Nickelodeon award. I mean, I have all these things that I've won. So I thought that would mean finally getting some recognition with BET.' It is evident the American has a lot of respect for Reese - despite clearly thinking she was more deserving of winning the aforementioned award.
'Anything that we do—good, bad—we say something, wear something; they're all down our throats," she continued. "Grown men, grown women constantly judging us, trolling us, trying to break our will and make us not be confident. And I think we both experience that. Being Black women, they attack us every single day. When I see her getting it and I go through it myself, I'm clapping for myself and clapping for her, because she just keeps going. I actually hate that it looks like I joined the Angel Reese hate train.'
She later added: "I hate that it actually looks like I joined the Angel Reese hate train. It's like no, listen, I'm with you. f*** them... I'm not allowed to be a competitor? That's what we are. We are female athletes. We are competitors... But I really do hate how they tried to pin us against each other. Listen, I'm an Angel Reese fan. I'm not a hater of her."

Neville has been one of the owners of Salford since 2014, agreeing to purchase the club alongside fellow Class of 92 members David Beckham, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and brother Phil - as well as businessman Peter Lim. However, Neville acquired Lim's stake in the club in 2024 and this year it was announced that only Neville and Beckham remained shareholders out of the Class of 92 legends following a takeover by a new ownership group. Neville has often shared pictures and videos of himself following Salford City and he left heartbroken last season after the team finished eighth - just one spot off the play-off places. Salford is one of many business interests Neville is invested in after starting the Hotel Football group in Manchester. He has also started an investment firm called Relentless, which has invested in restaurants and properties, and media group Buzz 16, which runs his Overlap podcast content.

‘It was the wrong thing to do to me' – Darts player who was punched by disgraced pro star speaks out for first time

But Whittaker, 40, has dismissed these claims, saying he never threatened his mum or insulted him at the event and that he believes he only punched him because he is a 'sore loser'. He claimed Smith-Neale, known as Big Dog, bragged to people at the tournament he was going to beat him badly and couldn't take it when he lost. Whittaker said: 'He doesn't like it because he lost. Before we started playing, he told everyone he was going to smash me. 'It was the wrong thing to do to me because when I am on my game I can beat anyone. 'He was going round the room saying he was going to beat me, and when he lost he didn't like it. He probably did it because he knows I can beat him.' He alleged Smith-Neale lightly kicked him in the back of his heel as he was about to throw darts several times during the match, saying he 'kept coming up behind me as I was about to take the shot and clipped me.' Whittaker claims when he asked him to stop his mum 'shouted her mouth off' and told him 'he was in the wrong' and he was 'nothing'. He added that the only interaction he had with her mum was to ask her 'I am in the wrong?' after she berated him, adding he 'made no threats to her'. Whittaker said Smith-Neale, who lost his professional status due to inactivity, punched him when he tried to shake his hand at the end of the match. He said Smith-Neale announced in the team's Facebook group chat in 2015 that he was leaving it because he wanted to play Super League darts. Whittaker wished him good luck with his new career in the chat, so he was left baffled after Smith-Neale had threatened him and the club captain by telling them he was going to 'punch them up'. He said he was shocked by his remark as he and the captain had previously got on well with the former pro. Whittaker said Smith-Neale can often be volatile and unpredictable, saying: 'He is just very up and down, he can be very friendly and then he can turn on you the next minute. 'He is just not a very nice person, he is always bragging and arrogant and claiming he is better than other players. It is good to have confidence but you do not need to have arrogance with it. He is just trying to ridicule people.' Discussing the altercation in an interview with Darts World magazine, the 2018 BDO World Masters champion, Smith-Neale said: 'It was on a Saturday afternoon in a local near where I live in Nuneaton. 'There was a bit of needle and he made threats towards me which plenty of people heard. 'Then my mum got involved and he had a go back at her, making threats also. 'It was kind of decided between us that we would sort things out after the match.' Asked by Darts World if he regretted his actions, Smith-Neale replied: 'If someone threatens my family, I would do the same thing again.' Smith-Neale's DRA suspension was backdated to March 12, 2024 – the date of his initial ban - and lifted on November 12 last year. The Coventry-thrower has returned to television screens this week with appearances on the MODUS Super Series in Portsmouth, which is on Pluto TV.
