A former Army Ranger was nearly sliced in half in a boat hit-and-run while on a family vacation to the Bahamas.
Brent Slough, 42, faces a grueling recovery process after the incident on the first day of the trip with his wife, Whitney, and their two daughters, Layla and Emma.
The Texas dad was snorkeling just 20ft from the shore when he was hit by the boat.
'I felt like a thump thump, and I was like, "Did I just get hit by a boat?"' Brent recalled to CBS News of the June 30 nightmare.
'My left leg wasn't functioning, and I felt like something was wrong with my lower body.'
Still in shock, Brent said he turned around and saw two men speeding away on a boat.
One of them allegedly looked back at the severely injured veteran, but they did not stop despite hearing his blood-curdling screams.
Brent's family witnessed the ordeal from the beach, with his teenage daughter, Layla, having to rush into the sea and drag him to safety on a float.
Whitney described his gut-wrenching condition, saying his 'bottom was almost completely detached from his legs.'
He sustained multiple leg and pelvis fractures and a deep gash that was at high risk of infection.
First responders were called and Brent spent the rest of the day battling for his life at two different Bahamas hospitals before being airlifted to a Miami ICU.
'The doctor told me, "please get to a hospital in Miami, you need to get to the U.S. for something this traumatic,"' Brent told CBS News.
Leaving their daughters in the Bahamas, Brent and Whitney traveled to Florida to ensure he received sufficient care - an expense they had to pay out of pocket.
He underwent a four-hour surgery, but Whitney said doctors were not able to stitch some of his wounds because they were too deep, so they have been packing them instead, WFAA reported.
While Brent remains in the hospital, Whitney went back to the Bahamas to get her daughters and make sure the culprit - who is still at large - is held responsible.
'It's against the law to be within 200ft of the shore,' Whitney explained to the outlet.
'Brent was about 20ft out ... I just wish they would turn themselves in, but if they don't turn themselves in, then we have to find them.'
Despite the heartbreak, Whitney said she is abundantly grateful her husband is still alive.
A GoFundMe page, which has already raised more than $71,000, has been created on the Sloughs' behalf to cover Brent's mounting medical costs.
'His upcoming medical needs are great - but we know God will move to make this happen for the Slough family,' the page reads.
Brent graduated from West Point and served six years in the military, including a tour in Iraq, according to WFAA.

Fresh details emerge over why glamorous pro boxer and influencer Stefi Cohen was arrested on domestic violence charge

More details have been revealed in the case of powerlifter and former boxer Stefi Cohen after she was arrested in Miami-Dade County last week. Cohen - full name Stefanie Cohen Magarici - was arrested on a domestic violence charge on July 2 stemming from an incident the day prior. According to court documents (via TMZ), Cohen got physical with her boyfriend in an altercation at their Miami-area home on July 1 around 12:47pm. Documents reveal that the alleged victim informed officers that the pair were arguing over their relationship when he discovered that Cohen 'was recording their conversation with her computer'. At this point, the man told officers he grabbed his phone and put it in his pocket. Cohen then got physical with him - scratching him on his neck and chest and tearing his pants pocket in an attempt to get at the device. Cohen allegedly said she thought that he had grabbed her phone instead. Documents say that Cohen told a different story, alleging that her boyfriend struck her with a closed fist and scratched her on her face. But the report reads: 'based on the fact that the victim in this case is a professional fighter and the allegations made by the defendant claim that she was struck by him with a closed first, there is no physical evidence of injuries on the defendant [Cohen] that supports her allegations.' Police added, 'the victim in this case had injuries consistent with his statement regarding what occurred with the defendant.' Cohen, who has a professional boxing record of 4-1-1, was eventually detained and charged with domestic violence battery. The pair had shared countless photos together over the past 18 months, with Tristan's last coming on June 25 - a week before his girlfriend's alleged arrest. Stefi has not posted any snaps with her man since March 28. This isn't the first time that Cohen has had a run-in with the law having been arrested last year on a charge of sexual cyberharassment. The Venezuela native allegedly accessed the ex in question's computer by trying commonly-used passwords, before accessing his iCloud - where she found several nude images of his new girlfriend and posted them to a group chat she was part of, according to court documents seen by NBC Miami. He had reportedly left the computer behind when he left the home they shared in March 2022. The alleged victim contacted police in November 2023, saying Cohen told her she was sending the images 'with the purpose of exposing and humiliating her.' According to Men's Health, she holds the all-time world records for the squat, total, and deadlift for the 123-pound weight class Cohen was arrested at her Coconut Grove home as she walked outside, with police saying she tried to resist arrest. According to the police report, Cohen 'did not comply and began to walk at fast pace back to her residence.' When police informed her she could not go back in the home, Cohen allegedly 'stated she was not going with them and began to physically resist.' After being placed in handcuffs, Cohen reportedly 'tensed up her arms' and 'right leg hooked' one of the officers, allegedly trying to 'sweep him off his feet.' Cohen continued trying to resist arrest after she was placed in the back of a squad car, per court documents. Police say once in the patrol car, she 'placed her right leg on the latch to unlock the door and grabbed it with her toes.' Cohen then 'pulled the latch with her toes and intentionally broke the locking system causing the door not to lock at all.' She was taken to the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center but was released after posting a $3,300 bond and ordered to stay away from her ex and his new partner. According to Men's Health, Cohen holds the all-time world records for the squat, total, and deadlift for the 123-pound weight class. She has had six professional boxing fights to date, winning four of them and losing one while drawing the other.
