He is one of the senior-most political leaders in the country, having entered politics in 1974 and in 1977 was elected as an MLA in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly. In October 2000, he became Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, but before that, in November 1999, he was the Union Minister of Surface Transport in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government at the Centre. In 2003, Singh became Minister of Agriculture in Vajpayee's cabinet at the Centre. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) elected Rajnath Singh as the party president for the term 2013 to 1015. As the BJP National President, he embarked on the Bharat Suraksha Yatra. In 2014, he became the Union Minister of Home Affairs in the Narendra Modi government, and in 2019, he was made the Defence Minister of the country. He continued with the portfolio in 2024 when the PM Modi-led NDA retained power at the Centre for the third term. Extending his birthday greetings, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said Rajnath Singh was an epitome of ideals, integrity, and restraint in Indian politics. ' … heartfelt birthday greetings to the Honorable Defense Minister Shri @rajnathsingh ji! Your public life of over five decades is a shining example of national policy, national security, and ethical politics. May the grace of Lord Shri Ram remain upon you. MBVV top cop shunted over ‘mishandling' of MNS-Sena(UBT) rally

MUMBAI: The state government has transferred Mira-Bhayander Vasai-Virar (MBVV) police commissioner Madhukar Pandey, a day after protesters led by the MNS and Shiv Sena (UBT) marched in large numbers through the streets of Mira Road, inflaming tensions amid the raging language row in the state. MNS party workers had called the protest to counter a stir organised by traders after a local shop owner was recently thrashed by MNS workers for refusing to speak in Marathi at Mira-Bhayandar in Thane near Mumbai.( Satish Bate/Hindustan Times) Sources in the state home department said chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, who heads the department, was not happy with the local police for denying permission for the march after the organisers refused to alter their route, as instructed by the police. 'There was no reason to deny permission when there is no culture of denying permission for any rightful protest. The leadership was upset as the police commissioner did not inform the home minister that he had denied permission, nor did he consult the director general of police,' said a senior official from the home department. Pandey has been transferred as additional director general of police (administration) with the state Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), switching places with Niket Kaushik. Tuesday's march, led by the MNS and Sena (UBT), took place even though the MBVV police had refused permission and made preventive arrests. The rally, pushing the cause of the Marathi Manoos, was a reaction to a protest march by Mira Road's traders last week, after a local shop owner was slapped and punched by MNS workers for not speaking in Marathi. As part of their protest, the MNS demanded an apology from the Mira Road trading community, populated largely by Gujaratis and Marwaris, accusing them of 'disrespecting Marathi'. MBVV police had told the MNS and Sena (UBT) they would permit the march if they would alter its route, as it was to pass by the sweet shop, whose owner the MNS had attacked on June 30. But when the number of protesters swelled as they assembled at Balaji Circle, the rally's starting point, police were overwhelmed. The protesters, comprising party workers, local leaders and locals, marched anyway, leaving the police on the back foot. The two protest marches in Mira Road have taken place after the MNS and Sena (UBT), claiming to be torchbearers of Marathi pride, got the BJP-led Fadnavis government to back down on introducing Hindi as the third language in primary schools in the state. Pandey is an IPS officer of the 1996 batch and was appointed as commissioner of the MBVV police on December 14, 2022. Claiming the transfer is routine, the home department said Pandey has been transferred as he had completed his term. Incidentally, even though the police commissioners of Navi Mumbai and Thane have completed their terms, they continue to occupy their posts. Neither Pandey nor Kaushik responded to calls and text messages from HT, for their comment.

Fatehabad resident gets bail in ‘offensive' AI videos sharing case

The Punjab and Haryana high court has granted bail to a Fatehabad resident, who was booked for sedition in May during Operation Sindoor, after he allegedly shared a pro Pakistan AI generated video on Facebook that was critical of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union home minister Amit Shah. The government counsel had submitted that serious allegations have been levelled against the petitioner and he did not deserve the concession of bail. (Getty Images/iStockphoto) The high court bench of NS Shekhawat granted bail to Mustaq Ahmed, a 65-year-old practicing bone-setter while observing that the petitioner is a senior citizen and deserves 'sympathetic consideration'. Mustaq Ahmed was booked by Fatehabad police for sedition and for allegedly sharing misleading/ false post on social media on May 15. Allegations were that one video showed PM Modi admitting that attacking Pakistan was a mistake. Another depicts the Pakistan PM punching the Prime Minister. Controversy erupted on May 14 and BJP workers in the district lodged a complaint against him. He was arrested on May 17. In his petition he had submitted that the police had examined his passport and it was found that after 1990, the petitioner had never visited Pakistan in the last 35 years. Even the video in question was not created by the petitioner, but he had only forwarded the video and there is no evidence to connect him with the commission of alleged crime, his counsels had told court further pleading that the petitioner was a senior citizen and was suffering from various old age related diseases, which is apparent from the medical shown to the court. The petitioner also tendered unconditional apology and undertook not to commit any such offence in future as well. On the other hand, the government counsel had submitted that serious allegations have been levelled against the petitioner and he did not deserve the concession of bail. 'In the present case, the petitioner was arrested on May 17, 2025 and has been in custody since then. The prosecution is yet to lead evidence to prove the involvement of the petitioner in the crime. At this stage, nothing is to be recovered from the petitioner and the investigation is almost complete. Even otherwise, the petitioner is a senior citizen and deserves sympathetic consideration. Thus, the further custody of the petitioner will not serve any useful purpose,' the bench said while releasing him on bail.
