Three held in hostel murder
It is believed that the suspects, aged 19 and 20, knew Maniishapriet Kaur Akhara, who was found dead in a students' accommodation in Cyberjaya on Thursday.
Sepang OCPD Asst Comm Norhizam Bahaman said a man and two women were arrested in Johor Baru, Johor, and Gemencheh, Negri Sembilan.
'They were detained within 48 hours of a police report lodged on the case,' he said when contacted.
The suspects have been remanded for seven days until July 3.
As of Thursday, a total of 14 people have had their statements recorded, including the deceased's roommates and a lecturer.
Maniishapriet, a physiotherapy student from Kuching, was staying with five other students but they had returned home for the holidays.
She was thus alone at the hostel as she was preparing for an upcoming examination.
A post-mortem revealed that the cause of death was blunt force trauma to the head.
Her ATM card, a laptop, mobile phone and cash were among the belongings found missing.
Police have detected five or six 'suspicious' bank transactions made in the Klang Valley shortly after she was found dead.
The Higher Education Ministry, in a statement on Thursday, said that all public and private higher education institutes must abide by the SOP on security and student welfare.
Compliance is imperative to ensure protection for all students under their responsibility, it said.
Messages of condolences and grief have flooded social media, posted by ordinary Malaysians as well as political leaders.
Some of the postings called for 'Justice for Maniisha'.

Negri to ban alcohol consumption in certain public areas, including parks and beaches
SEREMBAN: Negri Sembilan has decided to ban the consumption of alcoholic beverages along public beaches in Port Dickson, says Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun. The Mentri Besar said his administration has also decided to prohibit the consumption of alcoholic drinks in public fields, children's playgrounds and recreational parks. "The state executive council, at its meeting today, decided to ban such activities in these four public areas because of the high number of complaints from the people," he told reporters after chairing the meeting at Wisma Negri here on Wednesday (July 2). "Those who flout the regulations will be liable to a compound of up to RM2,000," he said, adding that all local councils have been told to enforce the ruling within their respective jurisdictions. Aminuddin said the ban was necessary as those who consumed alcoholic beverages often caused a nuisance, which caused others to stay away from these areas. He said some irresponsible individuals would also break the bottles and leave a mess. The authorities have also received reports of injuries caused by broken glass, he added. "There have also been reports of fights among those who consume alcohol in these places, and we want to put an end to this. "All Malaysians should be allowed free access to these places anytime without having to worry about their safety or wellbeing," he said, adding that some individuals feared going near these areas when they saw groups of people consuming alcohol. Aminuddin said that at present, the state's by-laws did not specify that drinking alcohol in public places was an offence. He said policemen or local council officers who respond to public complaints are only able to advise those who do so to leave the area. "This has caused certain public areas to be popular meeting points for those who consume alcoholic beverages," he added.

Cruise ship operating without licence seized off Langkawi
LANGKAWI: A cruise ship operating with an expired licence was detained by the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) during a routine patrol off the island yesterday. The vessel was flagged while conducting water recreational activities about 0.2 nautical miles west of Pulau Lintang Jalan about 6pm. Kedah/Perlis MMEA director First Admiral Maritime Romli Mustafa said the vessel was being operated by a captain and seven crew members, all of whom are Malaysians. "There were 39 passengers on board, 36 of whom were foreign nationals and three Malaysians. "Initial checks found the vessel was believed to be operating with an expired licence, an offence under the Merchant Shipping Ordinance 1952," he said in a statement today. Romli added that the estimated value of the seized vessel and case items is around RM2 million. "The cruise vessel, its crew and the seized items have been brought to the Dayang Bay Maritime Jetty for further investigation. "MMEA will not compromise on any activities that violate maritime laws and remains committed to regular patrols and enforcement efforts within Malaysian maritime zones," he said.

Bodies in S'ban house: Cops find note with family's details, request to contact church
SEREMBAN: In a development in the case of three people found dead in a house here, police have discovered a note asking anyone who finds the remains to call a church and have the bodies claimed. In the note, written in English, the full names and identity card numbers of the deceased were listed: a 61-year-old man, his 59-year-old wife, and their 29-year-old son. The writer of the note also provided the contact number of the church, in the heart of the city. It was reported earlier that Seremban OCPD Asst Comm Mohammad Hatta Che Din said a police team was sent to the house in Taman Bukit Kristal at about 5pm on Tuesday (July 1) after they received a report from a neighbour complaining of a stench. ACP Hatta said a forensic examination found a cut on the right arm of the son, while the parents' bodies did not show any suspicious signs. Police also found four knives with bloodstains and various types of medicines on a table in the living room. He said police have classified the case as sudden death reports for now, pending the findings of a post-mortem at Hospital Rembau. He urged anyone with information on the case to contact investigating officer Insp Adi Khusaini Saripudin at 012 770 7282 or the district police station hotline at 06 603 3222 to assist in investigations. Earlier Wednesday (July 2) morning, police forensic and medical teams returned to the unit to look for clues. They spent about two hours scouring the single-storey unit. A car belonging to the family was also seen parked along the road. Neighbours who spoke on condition of anonymity said the family had been renting the unit for about four years and kept to themselves.
