Kabini dam restoration work to be taken up at a cost of ₹32.25 crore: Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah

The Hindu4 days ago
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said the State Government will soon take up work on restoration of Kabini dam at a cost of ₹32.25 crore.
Speaking to reporters after offering bagina to Kabini reservoir on Sunday (July 20, 2025), Mr. Siddaramaiah said the State Cabinet meeting held recently at MM Hills had approved the restoration project for the dam, which is about 51 years old.
Outflow from Kabini to be increased, flood warning issued
The construction of Kabini reservoir began in 1959 and was completed in 1974. As 51 years had elapsed since its construction was completed, the Government had decided to take up work on its restoration and strengthening. He, however, hastened to clarify that the Government's restoration work does not mean that the dam had become weak.
It may be mentioned here that concerns had been expressed in certain quarters about the minor cracks and cavities in the dam structure. But, Cauvery Neeravari Nigam Limited (CNNL) had ruled out any immediate threat to the dam. 'The Government will also take up work on modernisation of Taraka canal system,' he added.
'The Kabini, which takes birth in Kerala, and joins Cauvery at T. Narsipura, is a tributary of Cauvery. The Kabini river irrigates 1,08,000 acres of land,' he said. Mr. Siddaramaiah said the Government was also planning to build a garden on the lines of Brindavan Gardens at KRS reservoir.
To a question, the Chief Minister said more than the stipulated quantity of water was flowing to Tamil Nadu and regretted that the Centre was not giving permission to the State to build a balancing reservoir at Mekedatu.
When his attention was drawn to BJP's suggestion that the Congress Government should convince its INDIA ally DMK, which is the ruling party in neighbouring Tamil Nadu, Mr. Siddaramaiah shot back and asked why the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders was not able to persuade their party's leaders in BJP-ruled Goa to permit the Mahadayi project in Karnataka, which is long pending.
However, he said the State Government was ready for Mekedatu project if the Centre gives permission for the same.
Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, who also holds the Water Resources portfolio, said the State Government had sent its technical teams to all dams to study their safety after a crest gate at Tungabhadra dam was washed away about a year back.
The Government will take up any work that is necessary for the safety of dams on a priority basis while adding that the restoration work of Kabini dam will also be taken up.
Responding to a request from HD Kote MLA Anil Chikkamadu, the State Government was considering a proposal to take up project to develop a garden at Kabini dam under public private partnership (PPP) model.
When asked about the demand for celebrating Kabini Utsav, Mr. Shivakumar said he will discuss the matter with the Minister in charge of Mysuru district H.C. Mahadevappa and take a decision.
He said, 'The Government had already planned to hold a Cauvery Arathi at KRS reservoir and added that the project will not only boost tourism, but also generate employment. However, he said the Government's first priority was safety of the dams.'
Mr. Mahadevappa, MLAs Anil Chikkamadu, Harish Gowda, A.R. Krishnamurthy and Darshan Dhruvanarayan and MLC D. Thimmaiah and others also accompanied the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister while offering bagina to Kabini on Sunday (July 20, 2025.)

Fresh caste census to kick off on Sept 22, final report by Oct-end

1 2 Bengaluru: Karnataka will launch a fresh, comprehensive door-to-door socio-educational survey — popularly known as the caste census — from Sept 22 to Oct 7, covering the state's population of an estimated seven crore. The massive exercise will involve 1.6 lakh govt employees, including teachers and officials from several departments. The move comes months after the state cabinet decided to shelve the previous caste survey report submitted in Feb 2024 due to widespread discontent over alleged under-reported population figures of politically dominant communities like Lingayats and Vokkaligas. That report, initially prepared by the Kantharaj Commission in 2015 and later modified by a panel headed by K Jayaprakash Hegde, was deemed outdated. Chief minister Siddaramaiah Wednesday met with officials from Karnataka State Commission for Backward Classes (BC Commission) and backward classes welfare department to finalise broad parameters. He said the enumeration must be completed by Oct, setting the stage for a fresh report before Nov. The new survey will include additional indicators such as economic status, political representation, landholding, and employment beyond the 54-question format used previously. "Addressing discrimination of castes is the main focus of the survey," Siddaramaiah said after the meeting. "It should be a model for the country. The next budget will be based on this survey." He said the exercise would be tech-driven this time with a mobile app being used for enumeration instead of manual formats. "The previous survey had 54 questions for respondents. We will have more questions this time. A technical committee will be set up to finalise the questions. The survey should be scientific and transparent," Siddaramaiah said. He also directed officials to set up a high-power committee to oversee operations in Bengaluru, where an earlier survey had lagged due to non-cooperation from people and staff shortages. Since teachers will be involved, the enumeration is scheduled during Dasara holidays to avoid disruption to schools. "Survey work should be transparent, and efforts should be made to ensure that no one is excluded," the CM said, urging officials to take precautions to avoid complaints. He also urged them to study the Telangana model of the 2024 SEEPC survey. Delayed clearing of drains could be behind gridlock

New Delhi: An intense spell of rain lashed the capital on Wednesday morning, triggering waterlogging on key roads. While some places held up — notably the flood-prone Minto Bridge near Connaught Place — several others were submerged, raising questions about monsoon preparedness. PWD sources reported water accumulation near Prahladpur, Laxmi Nagar, Mundka, Anand Parbat, Moti Nagar, and Loni Road. Social media videos filled in the gaps from other places. In one, former CM Atishi shared visuals of knee-deep water at the Municipal Girls' School in Tikri Kalan, captioning them: "BJP's four-engine govt should be ashamed. Water has entered up to knee level in the Nagar Nigam Girls' School in Tikri Kalan, but BJP doesn't care. " However, an MCD official argued that water collected inside the school because of the lack of drainage on the road and PWD carrying out infrastructure work there. "We have made a temporary slope with soil stacks to ensure water won't get inside the complex again. However, there is a desperate need for making permanent arrangements," the official added. You Can Also Check: Delhi AQI | Weather in Delhi | Bank Holidays in Delhi | Public Holidays in Delhi Other visuals showed a man swimming in a waterlogged stretch in Vinod Nagar, a woman boating in east Delhi\ and an AAP supporter rowing an inflatable tub — all underscoring localised failures in drainage. This comes despite official claims of having unclogged the stormwater drains. According to a July 9 progress report, 1,892km of Delhi's 2,158km of PWD-maintained drains were cleaned for an 88.5% completion rate, with 12,587 tonnes of silt removed. The final target date for completion of desilting was July 31. But zone-wise data reveals sharp disparities. The east zone reported 100% desilting, south zone was nearly done, and the north zone lagged—with 9 of 13 projects yet to reach even 90% completion on July 9. PWD officials on Wednesday claimed that overall completion was 93%, with pumps deployed in flood-prone areas to ensure smoother drainage. "Slip roads in certain parts are now being tackled. Zone-wise, west Delhi is where the gap still exists," said an official. With barely a week left before the desilting deadline, the big question remains: Will the remaining 7% make a difference or will some parts of the city continue to flounder every time it rains? As far as MCD drains are concerned, a recent claim by the corporation of clearing 1,70,620 tonnes of silt between Jan 1 and June 30, surpassing its target of 1,26,474 tonnes, still led to internal roads in the city reporting waterlogging on Wednesday. Residents in various localities in east Delhi, including Vinod Nagar, Pandav Nagar and Chander Nagar, complained about inundation on internal lanes. In south Delhi, Sangam Vihar, Badarpur, and Sainik Farms faced similar problems, while in central Delhi, Sadar Bazar and neighbouring areas reported water accumulation, albeit for a limited time. "In north Delhi's Kamla Nagar area, it didn't rain heavily on Wednesday, but on Monday and Tuesday, the lanes in the main market were flooded with rainwater," said Nitin Gupta, member, Kamla Nagar Traders' Association.
