Robot umpires to make All-Star Game debut, another step toward possible regular-season use in 2026

MLB sets the top of the automated strike zone at 53.5 percent of a batter's height and the bottom at 27 percent, basing the decision on the midpoint of the plate, 8½ inches from the front and 8½ inches from the back. That contrasts with the rule book zone called by umpires, which says the zone is a cube.

'I did a few rehabs starts with it. I'm OK with it. I think it works,' said three-time Cy Young Award winner Clayton Kershaw of the Dodgers. 'Aaron Judge and Jose Altuve should have different sized boxes. They've obviously thought about that. As long as that gets figured out, I think it'll be fine.'

Many pitchers have gravitated to letting their catchers and managers trigger ball/strike appeals. Teams won 52.2 percent of their challenges during the spring training test. Batters won exactly 50 percent of their 596 challenges and the defense 54 percent, with catchers successful 56 percent of the time and pitchers 41 percent.
Hall of Famer Joe Torre, an honorary AL coach, favors the system. After his managing career, he worked for MLB and helped supervised expanded video review in 2014.
'You couldn't ignore it with all the technology out there,' he said. 'You couldn't sit and make an excuse for, 'Look at what really happened' the next day.'

Now 84, Torre recalled how his Yankees teams benefitted at least twice from blown calls in the postseason, including one involving the strike zone.
With the 1998 World Series opener tied and the bases loaded with two outs in the seventh inning, Tino Martinez took a 2-2 pitch from the Padres' Mark Langston that appeared to be a strike but was called a ball by Richie Garcia. Martinez hit a grand slam on the next pitch for a 9-5 lead, and the Yankees went on to a four-game sweep.
Asked whether he was happy there was no robot umpire then, Torre grinned and said: 'Possibly.'

Then he added without a prompt: 'Well, not to mention the home run that Jeter hit.'
His reference was to Derek Jeter's home run in the 1996 AL Championship Series opener, when 12-year-old fan Jeffrey Maier reached over the wall to snatch the ball above the glove over Orioles right fielder Tony Tarasco.

Alex Bregman Breaks Silence on Signing New Red Sox Contract
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. The Boston Red Sox are in the midst of an impressive win streak and can hope for more when they return from the All-Star break. Shortly after trading away franchise slugger Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants, the Red Sox have gone on a 10-game tear and have good reason to believe that star third baseman Alex Bregman can put his injury problems behind him with some extra rest. "His plan is to return to Boston on Tuesday and report to Fenway Park to get more work done on his strained right quad," according to Peter Abraham and Alex Speier of The Boston Globe. "Bregman, 31, has hit .298 with a .927 OPS and 35 RBIs in 53 games for the Sox since agreeing to a three-year, $120 million contract that includes opt-outs after this season and next." Since going down with his quad injury, news has surfaced that Bregman would consider signing an extension or a new contract with the Red Sox before the end of the season. The New York Post's Jon Heyman reported that "both sides wouldn't mind getting something done," though discussions haven't yet been held. ARLINGTON, TEXAS - MARCH 27: Alex Bregman #2 of the Boston Red Sox is seen in the dugout during a game against the Texas Rangers at Globe Life Field on March 27, 2025 in Arlington,... (Photo by) More Rodriguez/Getty If a new deal can't be reached, Bregman is almost certain to opt out of his current contract and seek something more lucrative instead. And, speaking to Abraham and Speier, the third baseman spoke out for the first time since that news broke with one word about the chances of a new agreement being reached: "Maybe," he said. "I think for me, I'm focused on playing good baseball and trying to help this team win games," Bregman added, per Abraham and Speier. "We're obviously open to hearing whatever the Red Sox have to say." As the Red Sox look to continue their win streak and Bregman focuses on returning at full strength, it seems increasingly likely that the two sides will find a way to stay together beyond this season. In any case, it seems like Bregman is willing to skip free agency if his current team makes the right offer. More MLB: Potential Yankees Target Addresses Trade Rumors

Tigers Pursuing Trade For Pair Of Star Pitchers From AL Club, Per Report
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Detroit Tigers have already shocked the world this season. After a solid year last season and a very productive offseason, Detroit has put itself atop the league as one of the best teams. The Tigers surged into the All-Star break with the best record in baseball despite not having the star power that the other top teams have. Even with all this success, the Tigers need to be aggressive at the trade deadline. Detroit could use a few bullpen arms to add alongside Tommy Kahnle and Will Vest at the back end of games, and a trade would be the best way to find the new arms. USA Today's Bob Nightengale recently reported the Tigers were showing strong interest in a trade to acquire Minnesota Twins relievers Griffin Jax and/or Jhoan Duran ahead of the trade deadline. MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA - JULY 13: Jhoan Duran #59 of the Minnesota Twins delivers a pitch against the Pittsburgh Pirates in the ninth inning at Target Field on July 13, 2025 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The Pirates defeated the Twins 2-1. More"The Philadelphia Phillies have been extensively scouting Minnesota Twins relievers Jhoan Duran and Griffin Jax of the Minnesota Twins, hoping to acquire at least one of them," Nightengale wrote. "The Twins also are drawing strong interest from the Detroit Tigers, Chicago Cubs, Los Angeles Dodgers, and Cincinnati Reds." The Tigers' biggest roster hole is in their bullpen. If they can patch this hole with two star pitchers like Jax and Duran, there's a chance they're looked at as World Series favorites down the stretch. To make this idea even better, the Tigers are one of the only teams in baseball with the prospect capital available to make a deal like this happen. Detroit's system is loaded from top to bottom. Trading some of these prospects for two solid pitchers won't hurt the future of the franchise. More MLB: Red Sox Starter 'Will Be Sacrificed' Following $200 Million Alex Bregman Update
