Workshop ordered to refund RM10,000 for failure to replace car parts as promised

Muhamad Azam says the car began giving trouble in June 2024.
A PENSIONER filed a case with the Johor Consumer Claims Tribunal against a workshop for failing to rectify his car's leaking and overheating problems.
Tribunal president Hafez Zalkapli ordered the workshop to return a sum of RM10,000 to Muhamad Mufiah, 63, in two weeks.
The claimant's son Muhamad Azam Muhamad appeared before the Tribunal as his father was away performing the haj.
He said Muhamad Mufiah's compact sedan began giving problems in June last year.
The 32-year-old, who works as a telecommunication engineer in Singapore, said his father sent the car to the workshop in Masai, Pasir Gudang for repairs.
'The mechanic suggested an overhaul of the car's engine to solve the problems,'' he said when met outside the Johor Consumer Claims Tribunal at Menara Ansar, Johor Baru.
Muhamad Mufiah, he said, was willing to proceed but with a condition that the repair works should not exceed RM20,000, which the workshop owner had agreed to.
Muhammad Mufiah made the first payment of RM5,000 on June 19 last year, followed by a second payment of RM4,500 on June 28.
Muhamad Azam said the workshop had claimed that the car was repaired on July 31.
But in August, his father encountered the same problems.
'My father was driving along the North-South Expressway to Kuala Lumpur when the car started to overheat.
'He had to turn back to Johor Baru,'' he said, adding that the car was sent back to the workshop on Aug 1, as it had a three-month warranty.
Muhamad Mufiah then paid another RM6,500 for repairs.
'The workshop demanded another RM11,000 which my father paid on Aug 4, bringing the total bill to RM27,000,' he said.
He said that his father, unhappy with the repair work, sent the car to a workshop in Kuala Lumpur for repairs.
'He spent another RM3,300 for repairs and until today, the car no longer gets overheated,'' said Muhamad Azam.
He said the Kuala Lumpur mechanic informed his father that the Masai workshop did not replace the coolant tank, spark plugs and pistons as claimed.
His father then filed a case with the Tribunal, seeking RM10,000 refund from the Masai workshop.

HLYM give Malaysian rugby RM200,000 shot in the arm

SUNGAI BULOH: Malaysia Rugby (MR) received sponsorship worth RM200,000 from Hong Leong Yamaha Motor (HLYM) Sdn Bhd today (July 8) in what could mark the start of a game-changing partnership for the sport here. HLYM's contribution will be used by MR to prepare both the men's and women's national sevens squads for the Thailand Sea Games (Dec 9-20), where Malaysia will be gunning for medals in both categories. HLYM's move to sponsor MR came as a surprise to some as the former is usually associated with motorcycle racing in Malaysia and is a household name locally in underbone racing. Yamaha, however, have a strong history in both rugby and football in their home country Japan through the Yamaha Jubilo rugby club - now known as Shizuoka Blue Revs - as well as the Jubilo Iwata football club. HLYM managing director, Professor Datuk Dr Jim Khor, said HLYM is looking forward to cooperating further with MR in the future. "I think this is just the start, perhaps we can further discuss with MR on other (programmes) we can work together on for the development of rugby in Malaysia or perhaps even in motorsports," said Dr Jim during a press conference in Sungai Buloh today. "We believe in investing in the youths of today. We hope what we are doing will inspire other companies to do the same." When asked, Dr. Jim did not rule out the possibility of HLYM investing in a team - similar to Yamaha Jubilo - in Malaysia in the future. "That is a good suggestion that we will consider," he said. "Yamaha Japan have had the Jubilo football and rugby teams and even HLYM had sponsored the national age group football team here roughly 10 years ago. "Perhaps one day we could make it a reality." Former national player K. Dinesvaran competed for Yamaha Jubilo between 2013-2018 in the Japan Top League, which is the top-tier professional rugby league in Japan. Dr Jim also announced that the HLYM-operated GenBlu Cafe, which serves Malaysian-Japanese fusion cuisine, will also start serving a new dish dubbed the BLUngaraya 7s Chicken. He disclosed that 7 per cent of profits from sales of the dish will be channelled to MR.

OSK's entry into motorcycle financing offers fresh growth, says HLIB

KUALA LUMPUR: OSK Holdings Bhd's move into motorcycle financing opens up a new growth opportunity in an expanding market while helping diversify its risk across various customer segments. According to Hong Leong Investment Bank (HLIB), OSK is not entering the segment from scratch and the acquisition of Wilayah Credit provides a faster entry, as the company already has strong dealer networks and operational expertise. HLIB said it also comes with a valuable customer database and credit behaviour insights, which OSK can leverage across its broader financing ecosystem. "With OSK's strong treasury team and ability to secure competitive funding, there is potential to scale up the loan portfolio more effectively post-acquisition," it said. HLIB noted that OSK has agreed to acquire Wilayah Credit for RM16.5 million, a sum that is around RM300,000 higher than its net assets of RM16.2 million, translating to a premium of roughly 7.7 per cent after factoring in the disposal of shop lots. The research firm said the premium is justified, as the real value of the acquisition goes beyond physical assets. It includes intangible advantages such as a robust customer database, long-standing dealer relationships, and a solid market presence, which are not reflected in the balance sheet. "While the acquisition is modest in size, it reflects OSK's proactive approach to managing and diversifying its risk," the firm said. HLIB has reiterated its 'Buy' recommendation on OSK, keeping the target price unchanged at RM2.00. The firm highlighted OSK's attractive multi-engine growth story, driven by the rapid expansion of its private credit segment, which has recorded a strong five-year compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 24.8 per cent and is becoming a major contributor to the group's overall growth.

Vehicle dumping: Penampang folks face RM20,000 fine

Published on: Tuesday, July 08, 2025 Published on: Tue, Jul 08, 2025 By: Sidney Skinner Text Size: The Council's staff put their backs into moving this abandoned vehicle at the HSK Industrial area. PENAMPANG drivers could find themselves RM20,000 poorer for leaving their unwanted vehicles in the common areas around the district. A Municipal Council spokeswoman said this was the maximum fine which could be imposed in court, under the Uniform (Anti-Litter) By-Laws 2010. 'Alternatively, the offenders might have to spend up a year behind bars,' she said. 'In the worst case scenario, they could be slapped with both a fine and jail-term.' She said, since January, 191 individuals had been duly notified to transport their automobiles back to their respective properties. About 150 notices were affixed to vehicles around commercial centres and shops, according to her, while another 41 were left behind on automobiles which had encroached on housing roads. She said officers with the agency's Traffic Control Unit had made 168 separate checks of commercial and residential properties around Penampang between January and July, during which time these notices were issued. Among the former properties were the Koidupan Light Industrial area, Grand Industrial area, Fu Guan Industrial area, HSK Industrial area, Cyber Square, Country Heights shops, Regency Park Shops, Beverly Hills Plaza and Wong Kwok Commercial Centre. Where the housing areas were concerned, inspections were made of Taman Sindo, Taman Kibabaig, Taman Prima Sumundu, Taman Perdana Bundusan, Taman Kasigui, Taman Nosoob Jaya, Taman Peluduk, Taman Olivia, Taman Sei Juta, Taman Friendly, Taman OKK Lojungah, Taman Suria Apartment, Park Residence Sugud, Corinthian Garden, WB Villa and PPR ['Projek Perumahan Rakyat (The People's Housing Project)'] Kibabaig. The spokeswoman said the most notices were issued at the HSK Industrial area (36) and Taman Suria Apartments (28). 'Our records show that 62 motorists complied with our instructions over the last seven months.' She said those who had not removed their vehicles risked being compounded up to RM500, under the Uniform (Anti-Litter) By-laws. 'In the worst case scenario, we could begin legal proceedings against them. The spokeswoman said the agency frowned on illegal garbage dumps involving unwanted automobiles springing up around the district. 'Not only are these vehicles an eye sore but, more importantly, they could also become a potential breeding ground for Aedes mosquitoes.' To show that it was getting serious on the act of car-dumping, the Council began impounding vehicles last week. 'We carried out an operation at the HSK Industrial area on Friday. 'Nine of our Enforcement and three Landscaping personnel worked together with a tow-truck operator to remove five vehicles from the common areas here. 'These vehicles were impounded in the Council's new depot in the Pavilion area.' She said the owners would have to settle a compound, as well as the towing and impound charges, before their automobiles could be relinquished to them. 'They will have 30 days to do this. Any vehicles which remain after this will be disposed off.' When asked how the agency got rid of these automobiles, the spokeswoman declined to comment. She said the agency had enlisted the assistance of the Police Department to determine if the dumped automobiles had been used in any criminal activities. The Council's Enforcement officers would continue to be on the lookout for any vehicles which had been abandoned, or haphazardly parked, in public areas around Penampang, according to her. 'We are in discussions with the upper administration of the Road Transport Department about gaining direct access to the its database. This would greatly facilitate our efforts to take errant motorists to task.' * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
