MCD forms committee to address stray dog menace and implement shelter homes in Delhi
New Delhi: In a move to check the dog menace in the city, Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) on Wednesday formed a nine-member committee to ensure the effective implementation of control measures. The panel, to be chaired by Bhati ward councillor Sundar Singh, includes other councillors and senior officials, such as the director and additional commissioner of MCD's veterinary services. In the previous standing committee meeting on July 16, chairperson Satya Sharma had approved a proposal to establish dog shelter homes across all 12 MCD zones. The newly-formed committee will now oversee the rollout of this initiative and draft a comprehensive set of guidelines. This will include identifying suitable locations, assessing resource requirements, budget estimation, and coordinating with NGOs and expert organisations associated with public health and animal welfare," said Sharma. "The committee will develop suitable models for each zone and submit its report to the standing committee within a month. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Indonesia: New Container Houses (Prices May Surprise You) Container House | Search ads Search Now Undo It will not only focus on animal welfare, but will also ensure that public safety, sanitation, and health concerns arising from stray dogs are effectively addressed," she said, adding that the panel will work out a practical and sustainable solution. Sharma also highlighted the need for regulatory amendments to facilitate the relocation of stray dogs — an action currently restricted under the existing policy, Animal Birth Control Rules, 2023. The committee has been directed to examine this legal gap and recommend suitable policy changes. "If required, we will pursue central govt for amendments in the norms," she had stated earlier. The issue of stray dogs has come into focus following a recent incident in Noida, where a resident alleged harassment over feeding dogs in another residential area. The Supreme Court, hearing the case, pointedly asked the petitioner: "Why don't you feed them in your house?" In the previous standing committee meeting, councillors had noted a lack of sterilisations to control the dog population in Delhi as well as the absence of a dog census. An MCD survey of stray dogs has been pending for years. The last census was held nine years ago, conducted by the erstwhile south corporation. In 2016, a survey estimated nearly 1.9 lakh stray dogs in south Delhi, with 40.3% males and 27.8% females reported as sterilised. Officials have acknowledged that with no dog census done for years, it is difficult to ascertain the requirements for sterilisation.

Declare July 23 as ‘Guru Nanak Jahaz Remembrance Day': Akal Takht jathedar
1 2 3 Bathinda/Amritsar: Officiating jathedar of Akal Takht Sahib, Giani Kuldip Singh Gargaj, has called upon Sikh institutions and the central and Punjab govt to officially declare July 23 as 'Guru Nanak Jahaz Remembrance Day'. This date coincides with the forced return of passengers on the Guru Nanak Jahaz (Komagata Maru) from Vancouver in Canada on July 23, 1914. The Canadian city of Surrey has proclaimed July 23 as Guru Nanak Jahaz Remembrance Day. Earlier, the city of Vancouver declared Guru Nanak Jahaz Remembrance Day on May 23, when 376 passengers aboard the vessel arrived in Vancouver. Jathedar Gargaj said that on this day in 1914, under the leadership of Ghadar revolutionary Baba Gurdit Singh, a large group of Punjabis — mostly Sikhs — seeking a better future arrived in Canada. However, they were forcibly turned away, which was a grave violation of human rights. He stated that this episode is now officially recognised in Canadian cities such as Surrey and Vancouver as Guru Nanak Jahaz Remembrance Day, which he hailed as a significant step towards acknowledging historical truth. This day commemorates a major struggle against racism and in defence of human rights, led by Baba Gurdit Singh, who in 1914 founded the Guru Nanak Steamship Company. He chartered a Japanese vessel from Komagata Maru Company, renamed it Guru Nanak Jahaz, and challenged Canada's then-racist immigration laws. Jathedar Gargaj emphasised that historical sources clearly show that the journey from Hong Kong to Canada was deeply spiritual, marked by the presence of Guru Granth Sahib, Akand Panth Sahib, and the Nishan Sahib (Sikh flag) on board, embodying the values of Sri Guru Nanak Dev. He expressed regret that in India, history books still refer to the ship as Komagata Maru, despite Baba Gurdit Singh naming it Guru Nanak Jahaz, a fact verified in his autobiographical book, Guru Nanak Jahaz. He appealed to universities, academic institutions, and gurdwara management bodies across India to do justice to this history by adopting the correct name — Guru Nanak Jahaz — in textbooks and curricula. Teaching this name instead of Komagata Maru would be both historically accurate and morally just, he said. Such efforts, he added, would present true history and serve as a source of spiritual inspiration for future generations. Jathedar Gargaj said this event played a crucial role in the early 20th-century freedom movement and helped awaken the spirit of independence in the country. Baba Gurdit Singh, he added, must always be remembered among the great heroes of India's freedom struggle. He expressed gratitude to the city councils of Vancouver and Surrey for recognising July 23 not as Komagata Maru Day, but as Guru Nanak Jahaz Remembrance Day.

Lucknow: To honour armed forces and celebrate the success of Operation Sindoor , UP govt will establish at least one 'Sindoor Van' in every district. "These forests will be a part of Shaurya Van, which will be raised in every district on Aug 15 to mark the valour of the Indian defence forces," a forest department official said, adding that villages of martyrs will be the preferred locations for plantation.
