Sabah Assistant Minister of Local Government and Housing, Datuk Isnin Aliasnih, said councillors must actively participate in policymaking and problem-solving to ensure effective service delivery. His speech, delivered by Kunak assemblywoman Datuk Norazlinah Arif, emphasized the need for consistent involvement in council meetings and adherence to local by-laws. Isnin also highlighted the importance of integrity, transparency, and impactful ideas to align development with the aspirations of Kunak residents. The event, which drew an estimated 1,000 attendees, offered a relaxed yet spiritual platform for the public to reflect on the meaning of hijrah (migration) and its relevance in modern life. The programme began with a prayer recitation, followed by a nasyid performance by local group Infaq and a casual spiritual discourse segment (Bicara Santai) featuring renowned preachers Datuk Ustaz Kazim Elias, Ustaz Abdullah Khairi and Ustaz Nabil Ahmad. A special performance by popular nasyid group InTeam further enlivened the evening, adding a contemporary touch to the spiritually-themed gathering. One of the event's highlights was the presentation of the Maal Hijrah Figure Awards to two outstanding individuals in recognition of their contributions to the community. Datuk Abd Jaafear @ Abd Jaafar Henry received the award in the male category, while Ustazah Jamilah Abdul Razak was honoured in the female category. Sabah mulls free higher education, highlights ongoing student aid

Responding to calls from Lamag Assemblyman Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin, Arifin noted that while primary and secondary education is already free, the State is exploring tertiary-level support. Advertisement Existing programmes like BUDI and ILTP already provide aid and scholarships. In 2024, 306 students from Ranau benefited from BUDI, with 29 supported in 2025 so far. Thailand backtracks on casino bill as political turmoil deepens

(EPA Images pic) BANGKOK: Thailand's government will withdraw a controversial bill to legalise casinos from parliament following mounting public opposition and a fresh bout of political turmoil that has reduced the ruling coalition's majority. A motion to withdraw the so-called 'entertainment complex' bill from the current session of parliament will be raised on July 9 when it was previously slotted for consideration, government whip Visuth Chainaroon told reporters today. Advertisement The government had earlier indicated that it would delay the introduction of the bill – set to be the first major agenda after the house of representatives reconvened last week – saying it needed more time to communicate with the public and address their concerns about problem gambling and money laundering. The move to pull the bill came after the ruling alliance was pushed to the brink by the exit of Bhumjaithai Party, which had opposed the bill, and the suspension of prime minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra for an alleged ethical misconduct. Paetongtarn also faces other legal challenges after coming under fire for a leaked phone conversation with former Cambodian leader Hun Sen, in which she was critical of the Thai army's role in an ongoing border standoff with the neighbouring country. Without a clear majority, the government may face challenges in passing controversial or essential bills that have been lined up in the coming months.
