Society has a collective responsibility for curbing substance abuse, says SP
Udupi Superintendent of Police Hariram Shankar on Thursday said it is the collective responsibility of society to curb substance abuse.
Mr. Shankar was the chief guest at the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking programme, organised jointly by the Udupi District Police, the Department of Pre-University Education, Manipal Academy of Higher Education, and A.V. Baliga Group of Institutions.
MAHE vice-chancellor M.D. Venkatesh spoke about the role educational institutions play in transforming youth into responsible citizens. Principal of Government PU College, Udupi, Leela Bai Bhat, spoke about the importance of community and family support in drug prevention strategies. Director of A.V. Baliga Group of Institutions, P.V.Bhandary, also spoke.
Scientific way
Udupi Deputy Director of Women and Child Development C.K. Shyamala on Thursday said anti-drug awareness drives should be carried out scientifically to keep pre-university and degree students away from drugs.
Speaking at the International Day Against Drug Abuse programme organised by the Udupi District administration at the Christian Pre-University College in Udupi, Ms. Shyamala said drug abuse among students was a major issue in the education sector.
Disposed
As much as 3.542 kg of narcotic drugs seized by different police stations in Udupi police were disposed of at an authorised unit in Padubidri on Thursday.
As part of Drug Abuse prevention day, artistes Ravi and Lokesh did sand sculpture 'Nasha Mukt Udupi' on the Malpe Beach.
Nearly 600 students participated in the seminar, essay, and poster-making competitions related to narcotic drug abuse, which were organised at the Justice K.S. Hegde Institute of Management in Nitte on Thursday.

New Delhi [India], June 29 (ANI): Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) National General Secretary Tarun Chugh on Saturday launched a scathing attack on the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Punjab, alleging that drug mafias are operating freely in the state while Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann is preoccupied with the hospitality of party convenor Arvind Kejriwal. While speaking to ANI, Tarun Chugh said, 'AAP's governance is primarily for headlines, not for public interest. Drug mafias are roaming freely, and the CM, Bhagwant Mann, is only engaged in the hospitality of Arvind Kejriwal.' He further alleged that the governance failure in Punjab over the last several years has allowed crime and drug-related activities to flourish. 'AAP and Congress have been in power in Punjab for the last 8.5 years... The state has been thrown into the fire of crime and anarchy,' he added. Reiterating the BJP's position on the issue, Chugh added, 'BJP stands strong against drug dealers. No dealer should be spared.' His remarks come amid the arrest of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Bikram Singh Majithia, who was sent to seven days of police custody by a Mohali court on Thursday in connection with a money laundering case linked to drugs. He is scheduled to be produced before the court again on July 2. Meanwhile, AAP National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal, on the occasion of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, asserted that the Punjab government is tackling the drug menace at its root. In a post on X, on the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, Kejriwal wrote, 'Today is the International Day Against Drug Abuse. In Punjab, the AAP government is not just talking - we are taking strong action to make the state drug-free. We're fighting the problem at its root to protect our youth and their future. Let's salute every honest officer, volunteer, and citizen who stands with us in this real battle.' Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann also emphasised that their war against drugs has now transformed into a mass movement. 'The campaign we launched from Punjab to eradicate drugs, 'War Against Drugs', has now transformed into a mass movement. Those who ruin families and use the ill-got gains of this sin to build palaces and host lavish parties will not be spared,' CM Mann said while speaking to the media. 'We have improved law and order in Punjab and provided people with a safe environment. By taking the strictest action against drug traffickers, we have forced them to flee Punjab,' he said. (ANI)

Anti-Addiction Awareness Meet Held In Besa Under Operation Thunder
1 2 3 Nagpur: Marking the International Day Against Drug Abuse (June 26), the Nagpur city police commissionerate organised an anti-addiction awareness programme under the ongoing 'Operation Thunder' initiative. The event was spearheaded by Mukesh Kale, member of the peace committee, with the objective of sensitising citizens — especially the youth — about the alarming rise in substance abuse. Key dignitaries present were retired DGP Bhushankumar Upadhyay, ACP Narendra Hivare, PI Mukund Kawade, Bharat Nandanwar (administrator, Besa-Pipla Nagar Panchayat), and senior psychiatrist Dr Mosam Phirke. The speakers delivered powerful messages highlighting the grave dangers of drug and alcohol addiction on individual health, families, and society at large. Citizens were urged to stay vigilant and report any illegal activities related to the sale and distribution of narcotics and alcohol. The event concluded with a collective anti-addiction pledge followed by the national anthem. The awareness meet, held at Shubharambh Hall, Besa Road, witnessed the participation of around 650-700 people, including police officials and the police band, reflecting strong community involvement in the fight against addiction.

Prakasam police use drones to spread anti-drug message
Ongole: Prakasam district police, in an innovative move, used drones to fly banners with slogans such as "Say No to Drugs" and "Drugs Vaddu Bro" to spread anti-drug message. The drones were operated at all major junctions in the town, and the banners attracted the attention of hundreds of people. Prakasam district superintendent of police A R Damodar has taken the issue of narcotics seriously since the day he assumed charge about a year ago. He has visited several engineering and private colleges to raise awareness. He directed field officers to closely monitor the movements of suspects and take immediate action. He also instructed officials to organise meetings with parents and asked them to keep a close watch on their children to prevent them from falling prey to drug abuse. Addressing a meeting held to mark International Day Against Drug Abuse on Thursday, SP Damodar stated that youth, attracted by novelty, often experiment with drugs. This can lead to addiction, imprisonment, loss of job opportunities, and a ruined life. He warned that individuals caught in drug-related cases would have their names recorded in police records, which could impact their ability to get jobs, passports, or visas, and could lead to a loss of societal respect. He urged students and youth to stay away from drugs, make smart choices, and never start using them. The SP added that student, teacher, and parent committees would be established in schools and colleges to conduct large-scale awareness programs on the harmful effects of drug use. He noted that addicts are being admitted to de-addiction centers, while drug suppliers are being identified, with cases registered and action taken. District collector A Tameem Ansaria emphasised the need for collective efforts to make Prakasam district drug-free. She stated that extensive awareness programs are being conducted in colleges and schools to curb drug influence among the youth. Highlighting the success of the Navodaya 2.0 programme launched in Feb, she noted that within four months, the district had been declared free of illicit liquor. She affirmed that the government is taking all necessary measures to control and eliminate drug-related issues and called on all sections of society and voluntary organisations to join hands in this advised students to stay away from drugs and build a bright and successful future. MLAs Janardhan, B. N. Vijay Kumar, and other senior officials were present at the event.
