Indian student killed in Canada: Cops say Harsimrat Randhawa had just left the gym when she was shot; two vehicles recovered

Time of India23-04-2025
Two vehicles involved in the killing of India's Harsimrat Randhawa in Canada have been recovered, the Hamilton Police said.
The Hamilton Police on Wednesday provided an update in the Aril 17 shooting death of
Harsimrat Randhawa
, an Indian student, and said that they have recovered two vehicles involved in the shooting.
Acting Det.-Sgt Daryl Reid told reporters at a Wednesday morning news conference that the white Hyundai Elantra was recovered on Sunday in a residential area in northwestern Toronto. It has since been towed back to Hamilton for forensic analysis, he said.
On Monday, Hamilton police executed a search warrant at a central Hamilton residence and recovered the black Mercedes SUV, Reid said. The White Hyundai, police said, was probably the target vehicle towards which the shots were fired. Randhawa lost her life as she was caught in the crossfire and a stray bullet struck her chest. The shots also hit two houses in the area but no one was injured. Randhawa was taken to a hospital, where she died.
Police said the 21-year-old international student who was going into her second year studying occupational physiotherapy at Mohawk College had no time to react to the bullet that immediately killed her. She had just left the gym when she was shot. "She had taken a city bus to that location and had been waiting to cross the street. This was when she was struck by a stray bullet," Reid said.
Randhawa had zero capability of avoiding what was about to unfold in front of her. She had just stepped off of the city bus, was waiting to cross the street, from my understanding, and everything unfolded so quickly she had no time at all to react."
"We know from watching that video that there were numerous cars that just passed through at that very moment. Many of those people have come forward and I thank those people for coming forward to assist us," he said.
"But we know there are more people out there that might have even the smallest piece of information that could help us, and putting all of those little pieces together is what we need to do. So, we continue to encourage those people to come forward."

30-Year-Old Woman, Al Qaeda Terror Module Head, Arrested From Bengaluru

A 30-year-old woman has been arrested from Bengaluru for her alleged links with Al Qaeda. Sama Parveen, arrested by the Gujarat Anti-Terrorism Squad, is an alleged 'mastermind of the Al-Qaeda terror module' in India. Parveen's arrest comes days after four terrorists associated with the Al-Qaeda in Indian Subcontinent were arrested. Crackdown On Al-Qaeda Module In India On June 10, Gujarat Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) Deputy Superintendent of Police Harsh Upadhyay received intelligence that Instagram accounts like "@sharyat_ya_shahadat", "@f4rdeen_03", "@_mujahideen1", "@mujahideen.3", and "@sefullah_muja_hid313" are being used to spread anti-national and provocative messages. Terrorist content, videos, and ideology of the banned terrorist organisation Al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS) were being shared from these Instagram accounts, allegedly to provoke Muslim youth of the country and promote violence against the Indian government. ATS formulated a special investigation team, headed by Superintendent of Police K Siddharth, to crack down on the brains behind the social media accounts. The team identified four operators of the alleged Instagram accounts - Fardeen Sheikh (Fatehwadi, Ahmedabad), Saifullah Qureshi (Modasa, Gujarat), Mohammad Faiq (Chandni Chowk, Delhi), and Zeeshan Ali (Noida, Uttar Pradesh) - and arrested them on July 21 and 22. What Investigation Revealed During the investigation, AQIS literature promoting terrorism and a sword were recovered from Fardeen Sheikh. A video of him waving a sword and saying, "Bas yehi kami thi, ab sab pura ho gaya... Allahu Akbar! (This was the only thing left, not everything is complete)" was also recovered from his mobile phone. Provocative videos, content, messages encouraging religious violence and terrorist attacks and posts in support of Sharia law were found on the mobile and Instagram accounts of all four. Mohammad Faiq was also in contact with Pakistan's Instagram accounts @gujjar_sab.111 and M Salauddin Siddiqui 1360. A case has been registered against all four under various sections of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967 (UAPA) and Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The four accused are currently under police remand and are being interrogated. ATS is also investigating 62 social media accounts.

‘Hate being an Indian': Viral Reddit rant says women's safety, functional infrastructure, basic respect are ‘luxuries'

A Reddit user shared a strong post about feeling upset with India's present condition. 'Proud to be Indian? Look around—rape, filth, corruption, and apathy,' says the social media post. 'Sometimes I genuinely hate being an Indian because this country is a mix of filth, chaos, and hypocrisy,' the post starts on that note. According to the user, it's hard to feel proud when there's so much rape, filth, corruption and public apathy. People ignore traffic rules, spit and litter in public. At the same time, Indians fight over religion and caste. Women don't feel safe, and crimes barely shock anyone now. The user felt angry about paying taxes but still facing bad roads, garbage, floods and poor services. 'We bleed taxes through GST, income tax, tolls, and cess only to get potholes, garbage mountains, and cities drowning after one rain, while our money vanishes into corruption and political drama,' the user wrote. 'Still, we thump our chests calling ourselves a 'superpower' while living in a country where clean streets, women's safety, functional infrastructure, and basic respect for each other are luxuries,' the user added. 'Sometimes it just feels like the majority of us don't care as long as our own bubble isn't disturbed, and it's depressing as hell to watch a nation with so much talent and potential rotting in ignorance, apathy, and mediocrity,' the user concluded. Interestingly, many social media users agreed with the user on the issues. 'Simply drive 1 km on any road and you will understand how india is. Rules are a joke here. Spent millions on cameras and God knows what their use is,' wrote one user. Another user called India 'pretty much the laughing stock of the world'. 'I feel the same way, even people around us made this so normalise that if we try to fix they'll laugh. The other day me and cousins were hanging out in public place and I didn't throw the wrappers in road and kept in my bag to throw it in the dustbin, they all laughed so much,' came from another. One of them went ahead and wrote, 'To be honest, not even proud to be human.'

Hindutva activists stormed into our house, asked us to prove nationality: Kargil war veteran's kin

The family members of a Kargil war veteran have alleged that a group of around 80 persons affiliated to a Hindutva outfit barged into their house in Pune and demanded a proof of their Indian citizenship, accusing them of being Bangladeshis. The incident took place in the Chandannagar area of Pune on Saturday (July 26, 2025) midnight, they claimed, adding that some police personnel in plain clothes were also present at that time but they remained mute spectators. Irshad Shaikh (48) said his elder brother Hakimuddin Shaikh, who currently resides in Uttar Pradesh's Pratapgarh, served in the Indian Army and took part in the Kargil war. He retired as a havildar from the Engineers Regiment in 2000. "While my elder brother lives in Uttar Pradesh, I, along with my two brothers and their children, have been living in Pune's Chandannagar area for the last many decades," he said. On Saturday midnight, around 80 people suddenly came to our house and began banging on the door. When we opened it, some of them barged in and started demanding Aadhaar cards of the family members. When we showed the documents, they termed them as fake and asked the women and children to produce Aadhaar cards, Mr. Shaikh alleged. He said they tried to explain to the group that the family had been residing there for the last 60 years and that apart from his elder brother, two of his uncles had also served in the army. "But members of the group were in no mood to listen. They hurled abuses and accused us of being Bangladeshis. I told them that if they want to investigate, they are welcome to do so, but barging into someone's house, hurling abuses and forcing children to show documents at midnight was not appropriate," he said. Chanting 'Jai Shree Ram' Mr. Shaikh claimed that when the group of Hindutva activists began chanting 'Jai Shree Ram' and tried to force the family members to come to the police station, two individuals accompanying them identified themselves as policemen. During the entire episode, these two policemen in plain clothes stood by silently and did not do anything, he said. He also alleged that when they reached the Chandannagar police station, the woman police inspector took their documents and asked them to wait outside. "After making us wait for two hours, the officer told us to visit again the next day and warned that if we fail to do so, we would be declared Bangladeshi nationals," Shaikh said. He added that they visited the police station again the next day. "We were asked not to make an issue out of the incident and not to file any complaint. Police are now trying to pressure us and show that no one barged into our house," Shaikh, who works in the transport sector, said. If there were any discrepancies in the documents, the police would have taken a coercive action, he said. "But since all our documents are genuine, they are now asking us to stay quiet," he claimed, adding that he told the officers they could provide a proof of their Indian citizenship dating back to 400 years. Several family members served in Indian Army Several members of the family had served in the Indian army, Mr. Shaikh said. "My uncle was injured in the 1971 war after a bomb explosion and was awarded for his valour. Another uncle fought alongside Abdul Hameed during the Indo-Pak War of 1965," he added. Mr. Shaikh said they approached social activist Rahul Dambale, who helped them contact a senior police officer. The officer assured action in the matter, but even after three to four days, no steps have been taken, he alleged. Speaking to PTI, Hakimuddin Shaikh, who served in the Engineers Regiment, said what happened to his family in Pune was wrong. "We have been living in Pune for over 50 years. While living in Pune, my uncle Mohammad Salim was recruited into the Indian Army. What happened with my family was wrong, and if needed, I will speak to the police and seek an explanation," he said. DCP denies incident However, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 4) Somay Munde asserted that no such incident involving a large group barging into Mr. Shaikh's house took place. He, however, said that some police personnel did visit the place to verify their documents. "The drive against illegal Bangladeshi nationals is underway in the city. Under this drive, police received some information and went to the house to verify it. Since it was night, no women were brought to the police station and only some male members were asked to accompany the police. As it was late, they were asked to come back the next day. Prima facie, no illegality was found in their documents," Mr. Munde said. The police team that visited the house has video footage of the inquiry, he added. Meanwhile, Dambale, president of the National Conference for Minority, said the Hindutva outfit members tried to terrorise the war veteran's family members. "We have sought registration of an FIR in this connection. We will meet Pune Commissioner of Police Amitesh Kumar to demand action," he said.
