Good Morning Britain's Ed Balls leaves Charlotte Hawkins stunned with swipe at her 'podgy' appearance - as she warns him 'we'll have words after this'

Daily Mail7 days ago
Melvin Odoom had to intervene and diffuse tension while appearing on Tuesday's episode of Good Morning Britain 's after Ed Balls made a cheeky comment about his co-star Charlotte Hawkins.
During the most recent episode of the ITV show, hosts Ed, 58, and Charlotte, 50, were chatting to Melvin, 44, about some of the showbiz headlines.
One topic that got people talking about how singer Mariah Carey, 56, has said that 'aging just doesn't happen to her'.
Just moments before they shared an old snap of the Ed on our screens, the broadcaster confessed: 'People look the same as when I was 21. But do I want that?'
They then shared an old video of Charlotte showing off a white fitted coat while modelling on ITV's This Morning a number of years ago.
Charlotte said: 'Oh don't show that one. No one wants to see that. There's a reason why people don't want to see that.'
A shocked Melvin asked: 'When was that?!' to which Charlotte replied: 'It was on This Morning!'
An intrigued Ed asked: 'Has Charlotte aged well or badly?'
He continued: 'How have you aged? I think you have aged beautifully.'
Charlotte said: 'Thank you Ed. That is very lovely of you to say.'
Ed told her: 'You almost look younger than then. Then you were a bit more podgy.'
Charlotte let out a big gasp as she was shocked with what he said.
Melvin chimed in: 'Ed, Ed. Stop. Ed. Move on. I'm trying to help you my brother. Move on.'
Moments after the segment wrapped up, Charlotte turned to her co-star and asked: 'Podgy?!'
The show shared an old video of Charlotte showing off a white fitted coat while modelling on ITV's This Morning a number of years ago (pictured)
Trying to get himself out of a very awkward situation, Ed told her: 'I think you look lovely.'
Luckily Charlotte saw the funny side of things and said: 'We'll have words after this...'
Last week Good Morning Britain viewers called for a presenter to be investigated by Ofcom as he hosted Tuesday's instalment of the ITV show.
The latest episode of the programme saw Kate Garraway, 58, and Ed Balls, 58, return to our screens to discuss the latest headlines and newsworthy topics.
During one segment the pair discussed the small boat crisis with Michael Gove, 57, and Kevin Maguire, 64.
And some think that Ed shouldn't be involved in political interviews when his wife, Yvette Cooper, 56, is the Home Secretary.
Some took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to share their thoughts.
'Ed Balls 'grilling' a Labour MP when you're wife's the Home Secretary should be investigated by OFCOM. It's not right...'
'Smug Ed Balls, whose wife is chief of command for protecting the public in this country, should pipe down.'
'I simply cannot stand Ed Balls, he is so smug and has a clear conflict of interest because his wife is a cabinet member (and not a good one either). His smug smile is so annoying!'
'Total embarrassment listening to #GMB this morning nearly every story mentioned by the panel is the actual responsibility of the Home Secretary...who just happens to be 'Mrs Ed Balls', the pointlessness of this 'chat' is truly appalling.'
Good Morning Britain airs weekdays on ITV1 from 6am and is available to stream on ITVX.

Hollyoaks actor John Middleton lets slip huge spoiler and it's bad news for one character

Hollyoaks actor John Middleton appeared on Tuesday's Good Morning Britain John Middleton spoke all about his new Hollyoaks role on Tuesday's Good Morning Britain. ‌ The actor, 71, who is best known for playing Emmerdale's kind-hearted vicar Ashley Thomas for 21 years has now joined the rival Channel 4 soap as "evil character" Froggy Black. ‌ John is playing convict Froggy, the grandfather to notorious characters Clare Devine (Gemma Bissix) and Grace Black (Tamara Wall). ‌ Currently a resident of Longmere prison, Froggy has struck up an alliance with the newly imprisoned 'Tax Man' Tom Cunningham (Ellis Hollins), who has become his clandestine financial adviser. Recent episodes have shown Tom plotting against his old nemesis Clare, apparently collaborating with Froggy in his schemes. ‌ Froggy's storyline kicks off when he learns shocking news about Gracie's location from Tom, prompting him to take action. Yet, it remains to be seen if his grandchildren will accept him with open arms... Talking about the storyline and new role on Tuesday's Good Morning Britain, host Ed Balls asked of his character: "Are you going to be reformed?" To which John teased of Froggy: "I might appear reformed but he knows a lot of secrets about other people and in fact one in particular if he revealed what he knows about that person's past... it would be catastrophic..." ‌ He added: "We'll have to see how the story develops..." Meanwhile fellow host Kate Garraway asked: "Prison reform are you [Froggy] going to turn it on its head?" to which John admitted: "I somehow doubt it with the way things are going..." ‌ Soap watchers will recall that John played Emmerdale vicar Ashley from 1996 to 2017. Ashley's slow deterioration after his dementia diagnosis saw him lose his memory, no longer able to recognise his wife, Laurel and their children in emotional scenes. The character tragically passed away in 2017, leaving viewers in tears over the heartbreaking and poignant scenes. In 2017, John won Best Male Dramatic Performance at The British Soap Awards for his heartbreaking portrayal of Ashley amid the character's dementia diagnosis. Since leaving Emmerdale, John showcased his talents in Strangers on a Train, playing American detective Arthur Gerard. In 2021, John took on the role of Frank in the one-man show Hull and High Water, and throughout 2022 and 2023, he portrayed Colonel Pickering in the UK Tour of My Fair Lady. Hollyoaks airs Monday to Wednesday on E4 at 7pm and first look episodes can be streamed Channel 4 from 7am.
