Class 3 student dies of snakebite in Chhattisgarh's Jashpur hostel; two officials suspended, probe ordered by district collector

Time of India6 days ago
RAIPUR: A case of negligence, a Class 3 student died after being bitten by a snake inside a tribal residential school hostel in Jashpur district, Chhattisgarh. The incident led to the suspension of two senior school officials.
The victim, Amrit Sai, aged nine, was a resident of the Government Scheduled Tribe Boys' Hostel in Bagia. He died after a snake bit him while he was asleep in the hostel. Investigations revealed serious lapses in hostel maintenance, delayed reporting, and failure to provide timely medical care, all of which contributed to the boy's death.
Collector orders suspension
Jashpur Collector Rohit Vyas ordered the suspension of hostel superintendent Thakur Dayal Singh and hostel attendant Ramkunwar Sidar for gross negligence.
Singh also serves as a teacher at the Pre-Secondary School in Shabdmunda.
'Preliminary findings show that instead of taking the student to the nearby Primary Health Centre, which is only 2–3 kilometres away, the superintendent panicked and took him to a Community Health Centre, causing an unnecessary delay. The snake was later identified as a common krait, and timely treatment could have saved the boy,' said the Collector.

Rule invoked, headquarters shifted
Citing Rule 9(1)(a) of the Chhattisgarh Civil Service (Classification, Control and Appeal) Rules, 1966, the Collector suspended Singh with immediate effect. He will receive a subsistence allowance during the suspension period, and his headquarters has been moved to the Office of the Block Education Officer, Kansabel.
Similarly, Ramkunwar Sidar was suspended for negligence in cleaning and maintenance, which allowed the snake to enter the hostel undetected.
Neglect in supervision
A show-cause notice was issued to Fakir Ram Yadav, the Block Coordinator of Kansabel, for failing to ensure proper supervision. An unannounced inspection by the Sub-Divisional Revenue Officer revealed broken window panes, overgrown bushes, and unhygienic hostel conditions, including unclean beds.
The notice stated that such negligence during the monsoon season, when poisonous creatures are common, directly contributed to the tragedy.
Yadav was found to have violated the Chhattisgarh Civil Service Conduct Rules, 1965, by not ensuring regular inspections and safety instructions.
He has been asked to submit a detailed explanation within three days, failing which disciplinary action will follow.
Safety measures strengthened
Collector Vyas said a compensation of ₹4 lakh has been arranged for the bereaved family. All tribal hostels in the district are now under strict monitoring, and officials have been directed to enforce safety and hygiene protocols.
'Given that Jashpur is known as a 'Naglok' (snake-prone area), anti-snake venom is being ensured at all health centres. We also conduct awareness drives regularly,' he added.

Retired army man and wife found murdered in Bikaner home; tenants under scanner

1 2 Jaipur: The decomposed bodies of a 67-year-old retired army man and his wife were discovered inside their home in Muktaprasad Colony of Bikaner town on Tuesday, in what police believe is a suspected double murder. Officers said the bodies appeared to be at least three days old, and preliminary findings from the postmortem suggest the couple may have been strangled. A man who was living in the house as a tenant was detained for questioning. Police identified the victims as Gopal Verma and his 62-year-old wife, Nirmala Verma. The couple lived alone in their house in Sector 4/11. Both their sons work in different multinational companies. One of them live in Noida, while the other lives in Canada. According to police, Gopal Verma's son, who lives in Noida, repeatedly tried to call them but received no response. Concerned, he asked his uncle who lives nearby, to check on them. This raised strong suspicion of murder and possibly robbery. Forensic teams and a dog squad were brought in to examine the scene for evidence. Neighbours told police they last saw the couple on Sunday while they were at a nearby park. Investigators found a bag and some personal items in a room on the first floor, suggesting that part of the house may have been rented out without proper verification. Relatives in the town expressed suspicion about a former tenant, who has since been detained. "Prima facie, it seems the crime took place on Sunday. A long scarf appears to have been used to strangle the couple," an officer said. SP Bikaner Saurabh Tiwari said a man was detained and police are verifying the background of all former tenants. Local residents, joined by some public representatives, staged a sit-in on Tuesday demanding immediate arrests. Police said the investigation is ongoing.

Court denies pre-arrest bail to Jordan visa fraud accused

Thiruvananthapuram: District court on Wednesday rejected the anticipatory bail application of the accused in the Jordan visa fraud case. However, Kazhakkoottam Police, who are probing the case, informed that arresting the accused was not under their consideration now, as they have sent a request to the city police commissioner to hand over the investigation to another agency. Biju Jalas, 44, of Thumba, was accused of defrauding lakhs of rupees from several people by promising them Israeli work visas. However, they were taken to Jordan and directed to sneak through the border to Israel without valid visas. The fraud came to light after Thumba native Thomas Gabriel Pereira, 47, was shot dead by Jordanian soldiers in Feb 2025, while attempting to sneak into Israel. His brother-in-law Edison, 44, was also injured in the leg in the firing. Another couple, John Mary, 48, and her husband Romance, 52, were also taken to Jordan on Jan 7, 2024, with the promise of Israeli work visas with an attractive salary. However, they were also taken to Jordan and Romance died of a cardiac arrest there. In a similar way, the accused had cheated several people. "Since the crime took place in Jordan, a detailed probe has to be conducted by a suitable agency and the accused claimed that the victims were taken to Jordan after being convinced of the risks involved. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like No annual fees for life UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo We received direction from the top level not to arrest the accused now. A request was given to the city police commissioner to hand over the probe to a suitable agency. Meanwhile, we were also directed to collect maximum evidence and submit a preliminary investigation report. Based on the report, higher-ups will take a decision to hand over the probe," police said. In the meantime, the victims alleged that the probe team was working hand in glove with the accused. "The probe into the case is not effective, as police freed the accused despite knowing that he committed a grave crime. We need justice, as this is not just an issue for me and Thomas, but there are many others who Jalas cheated in the same manner. In Thumba alone, more than 10 people lost their money in the fraud and they are willing to move legally. The larger network behind the fraud must be exposed," said Edison.
