Lt Gen Pushpendra Singh to be next Vice Chief of Army Staff, all you need to know
He will succeed Lt Gen NS Raja Subramani, who had assumed the appointment of the Vice Chief of the Army Staff (VCOAS) on July 1 last year.
Also, Vice Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan, is set to be the next Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Western Naval Command. He had assumed charge as the Vice Chief of the Naval Staff (VCNS) on May 1, 2024.
Vice Admiral Sanjay Vatsayan, set to be the next VCNS, will take charge on August 1, a senior official said.
Lt Gen Singh is set to take charge as the next Vice Chief of the Army Staff on August 1.
The officer is an alumnus of the Indian Military Academy and was commissioned into the 4 Para (Special Forces) in December 1987.
With an illustrious career spanning over more than three decades, he has participated in Operation Pawan, Operation Meghdoot, Operation Rakshak and Operation Orchid.
He has foreign combat exposure in the United Nations Peacekeeping Missions in Lebanon and Sri Lanka, the officials earlier said.
The officer had in April 2022 taken over as the General Officer Commanding of the Rising Star Corps.
Raised in 2005, the Corps is based in the Yol cantonment town in the Kangra Valley, southeast of Dharamshala in Himachal Pradesh.

Since January 2025, daily deportations of Indians from the US have tripled under Trump's stricter immigration rules; most returnees are from Punjab, Haryana, Gujarat, UP, and Goa New Delhi Since Donald Trump returned to office in January 2025, the number of Indian nationals deported from the US has gone up significantly. According to data from India's Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), 1,703 Indians have been sent back in just six and a half months — averaging around eight deportations a day, news agency PTI reported. This is almost three times the daily average seen during the Joe Biden administration, when about three Indians were deported daily between January 2020 and December 2024. US steps up warnings on visa violations and illegal entry In late June, the US State Department warned that visa holders must strictly follow all American laws and immigration rules. 'We will revoke their visas and deport them if they don't,' it said on June 26. Earlier that week, a separate message was issued targeting undocumented migrants. 'The US has increased enforcement of immigration laws and removal of illegal aliens,' it stated. 'Illegal entry will lead to detention, deportation, and permanent consequences for future visa eligibility.' Deportees returning in staggered batches Of the 1,703 Indians deported so far this year, 747 flew back from the US individually or in small groups via commercial flights. Another 72 came through Panama using a similar process. India does not keep its own official figures on how many of its citizens live illegally in the US. For deportations and consular matters, it relies on information provided by US authorities. The MEA said it is 'engaged with US counterparts to ensure deportations are carried out humanely.' It has raised concerns about the use of shackles, especially on women and children, and has also highlighted issues around cultural and religious sensitivities. Most deportees from five Indian states Data shows that over 90 per cent of deported Indians in 2025 so far came from just five states. Punjab topped the list with 620 deportees, followed by Haryana (604), Gujarat (245), Uttar Pradesh (38), and Goa (26). Other states and union territories reported fewer cases: Maharashtra and Delhi (20 each), Telangana (19), Tamil Nadu (17), Andhra Pradesh and Uttarakhand (12 each), and Karnataka (5). NAPA demands Punjab govt to withdraw Land Pooling scheme
Chandigarh, Aug 2 (PTI) The North American Punjabi Association (NAPA) on Saturday issued a warning to the Punjab government over the 'controversial" Land Pooling Scheme. NAPA Executive Director Satnam Singh Chahal said that if the government fails to withdraw this 'anti-farmer" scheme, it will become extremely difficult to control the rightful landowners, whose livelihoods and ancestral lands are under direct threat. Chahal emphasised that the Punjab Government must act responsibly and immediately revoke this policy, which has sparked widespread resentment among farmers and landowners across the state. He urged Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann not to blindly follow Arvind Kejriwal and his team, who are consistently pushing policies that are detrimental to Punjab's interests. 'Punjab's unique socio-economic fabric cannot withstand such experimental schemes designed by people who do not understand the ground realities of our state," Chahal said. 'It is high time that the Punjab Government starts taking independent decisions in the larger interest of its people rather than becoming a laboratory for Delhi's political agendas," he added. NAPA reminded the Punjab government that the farmers of the state have already made countless sacrifices for the nation's food security and deserve respect and fair treatment—not policies that threaten their existence. The association warned that any attempt to implement the Land Pooling Scheme forcibly would lead to a massive statewide agitation, which could spiral out of control if the genuine concerns of the people are ignored. Trying to motivate people to visit J&K: Omar
Chief minister Omar Abdullah, who was in Gujarat to promote J&K tourism, said that post the Pahalgam attack, tourist places have been secured in Kashmir and only those places which haven't been cleared by security are closed. (PTI) Omar on Friday while concluding a two-day tour of Gujarat said he is trying to motivate people of different parts of the country to visit J&K as tourism is the backbone of the economy of the UT. 'In the immediate aftermath of the Pahalgam attack, almost all our tourist destinations were closed for a security audit. We only started reopening them once we were satisfied with the results of that audit,' he said. He added that several tourist places which haven't been cleared by security agencies are still closed. Omar earlier had told mediapersons that even those who were responsible for the attack on tourists were killed. 'They were killed not in the city or close to tourist places but in a far off place,' he said while making his point that Kashmir is a safe tourist destination now. He said that he is trying to motivate people to visit J&K as our economy is relying on the tourism sector.' On Friday, Omar also visited Sabarmati Ashram and said his Ahmedabad visit is now complete. 'My visit to Ahmedabad is now complete. I feel both humbled & privileged to have been shown around the Sabarmati Ashram of the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi. His teachings ring true even today & point us in the direction we should take but seldom do,' J&K chief minister wrote on X. On Thursday, Omar Abdullah visited Sabarmati River Front promenade and Statue of Unity and praised this place. 'While in #Ahmedabad for a tourism event I took advantage of being here to get my morning run at the famed Sabarmati River Front promenade. It's one of the nicest places I've been able to run & it was a pleasure to get to share it with so many other walkers/runners. I even managed to run past the amazing Atal Foot Bridge,' Omar wrote on X while sharing his jogging pictures which even caught the attention of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
