
Pretty in Purple: 1965 Chevy Impala on Bring a Trailer
The full-size 1965 Chevrolet was a million-selling car, but not very many were painted or powered like this one.
This was the last year for the 409-cubic-inch V-8.
Add a one-year-only color, and you have a rare Impala.
Announced in December of 1960, the W-series big block 409-cubic-inch V-8 was Chevrolet's Christmas present to the drag racing community. Equipped with twin four-barrel carburetors, and later stroked out to produce a 427-cubic-inch version for NASCAR and quarter-mile fiends, the 409 was notorious enough to get its own Beach Boys call out, a year before Little Deuce Coupe. By 1965, however, it was being phased out in favor of the new 396, making a '65 Impala SS with a 409 option box checked a very rare beast indeed.

This 1965 Impala SS Sport Coupe has the 409 V-8, fed by a single quad-carb setup and paired with a four-speed Muncie manual, and it's up for sale on Bring a Trailer (which, like Car and Driver, is part of Hearst Autos). It's also optioned with air conditioning, power windows, power steering, power brakes, and a limited-slip rear differential.

1965 was a very good year to be a Chevrolet executive or dealership owner, as that model year saw the Impala hit the million-sales mark. With 1,046,500 sold, the Impala was more than 11 percent of the entirety of U.S. automotive production, and accounted for nearly half of all Chevrolets sold.
Thus, the full-size Chevys were everywhere, but perhaps you didn't want to be parking a carbon-copy of your neighbor's car in your own driveway. With so many cars flying off the lots, Chevrolet expanded its options range, and extended it to some pretty special colors, in this case the wonderful Evening Orchid. It's gorgeous, and you can just imagine how it looked in-period with neon lights reflecting off that big trunk with its signature six-pack of taillights.

As mentioned, the 409 was a drag racer's dream, happy to rev despite a displacement of 6.7 liters. In this application, power was a little more modest at 340 SAE net (the dual-quad-carb setup was over 400 horsepower), but that's plenty when paired with a four-on-the-floor manual. Getting those 14-inch bias-ply tires to hook up for a decent hole shot would be tricky, even with the Posi-trac rear end, but this was a plenty quick car in its day, and no slouch now.
The driveline and mechanicals of this example are largely original, though it was cosmetically overhauled in the mid-1990s, including fresh paint and new-old-stock bumpers. The carpet was also replaced at the time, but the interior was left largely alone apart from a decent deep cleaning. The odometer shows 58,000 miles, and the overall condition bears that out.

With a build date of early January 1965, this is pretty much the last gasp for the '65 409 Impala, of which just over 2000 were built. The one-year-only color makes it that much rarer, but it's not so much the rarity alone here that makes this car special. It's an eye-catcher with big-block power, an it splits the difference between boulevard cruiser and stoplight warrior. Behind the wheel, you'll be in the pink.

Bond yields have remained elevated as even the Fed has lowered interest rates. Countercyclical stocks like Dollar General and AutoZone should do well amid economic pressure. 10 stocks we like better than Philip Morris International › Jami Dimon is one of the most respected minds on Wall Street. The JPMorgan Chase (NYSE: JPM) CEO not only leads the biggest bank in the country by assets but also famously led his bank though the 2008 financial crisis and did not need to be rescued by the government, though it did participate in the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP). Given his experience and his position, investors tend to pay attention to what Dimon has to say, so it was notable when he warned of the bond market "cracking." At the Reagan National Economic Forum earlier this month, Dimon predicted that the bond market would crack, blaming excessive deficit spending and a large debt for pressuring interest rates higher as the 10-year yield is hovering at levels not seen since 2007. If you're looking for stocks that will help protect you from a cracking in the bond market, keep reading to see three that can do just that. Philip Morris Intenational (NYSE: PM) is well equipped to thrive no matter what happens with the bond market for several reasons. First, the stock gets nearly all of its business from international markets, so it's less exposed to the typical S&P 500 stock. Second, the company sells tobacco products and related next-gen products like Zyn oral nicotine pouches. Those are typically seen as recession-proof products since consumers buy them regardless of the state of the economy. In other words, bond rates are unlikely to affect demand for the product. Additionally, the company has delivered strong results across the business, especially with its next-gen business, made up of products like Zyn and its IQOS heat-not-burn devices. The next-gen category now makes up more than 40% of its revenue and gross profit, showing it can still deliver growth despite competing in the mature tobacco market. Like Philip Morris, AutoZone (NYSE: AZO) has proven its ability to deliver results even in a recessionary environment. In fact, AutoZone, like other aftermarket auto parts, is countercyclical, meaning it tends to do better when the economy is weak. That's because in weak economies, consumers choose to avoid buying new cars and instead spend money on repairs, which favors retailers like AutoZone. In addition to the nature of the business, the company also has a long history of outperforming the market thanks to its hub-and-spoke store model whereby larger nearby stores can support and supply smaller stores, helping to ensure that all stores are fully stocked. Given that it benefits from a delay in new car purchases, the stock should do fine if the bond markets break. Dollar General (NYSE: DG) is another good candidate for a stock that can withstand any fallout in the bond market. Like AutoZone, Dollar General has a history of outperforming during weak economies as consumers tend to "trade down," meaning shoppers who would typically go to more expensive stores shift their shopping to Dollar General. In fact, Dollar General said it was already starting to see some higher-income customers shop in its stores due to concerns about tariffs and the general pressure on the economy. During past recessions and other challenging economies, such as the financial crisis and the pandemic, Dollar General's results soared. The company also benefits from earning nearly all of its revenue from consumer staples like food, paper products, and cleaning products. With a focus on low prices, small pack sizes, and convenient locations with more than 20,000 stores across the country, Dollar General looks like an easy stock to own if the bond market starts to crack as Dimon predicted. Business Secretary meeting Lotus after reports of plans to scrap UK carmaking
The Business Secretary will hold talks with Lotus after the carmaker appeared to shelve plans to shut its UK operations. After reports that Chinese owner Geely was planning to stop manufacturing at the Hethel plant in Norfolk, putting 1,300 jobs at risk, Lotus issued a statement saying it had 'no plans' to close the factory. Jonathan Reynolds will speak to the company on Sunday, the PA news agency understands. The British sportscar brand has been majority-owned by Chinese multinational Geely since 2017. The Financial Times had reported it was considering shutting up shop in the UK and in favour of a new plant in the US. On Saturday, Lotus sought to assuage concerns with a statement that it remains 'committed' to the UK, which it called its largest commercial market in Europe and the 'heart' of the brand. 'Lotus Cars is continuing normal operations, and there are no plans to close the factory,' it said. 'We are actively exploring strategic options to enhance efficiency and ensure global competitiveness in the evolving market. 'We have invested significantly in R&D and operations in the UK, over the past six years. Lotus remains committed to the UK, and its customers, employees, dealers, suppliers, as well as its proud British heritage.' A Government spokesperson said: 'The Government does not comment on speculation or the commercial affairs of private companies.'
