Clinical RCB trounce PBKS to punch tickets for IPL final with emphatic 8-wicket triumph
After a spirited bowling display spearheaded by Josh Hazlewood and Suyash Sharma's three-wicket hauls, Bengaluru batters breathed fire to trounce Punjab by adopting an aggressive attacking policy. It was one-way traffic from the first over of the first innings, and the batters ensured it stayed the same in the second.
In defence of their trifling 101-run total, Punjab showed resistance as Kyle Jamieson turned the clock and rekindled the memory of the inaugural World Test Championship final. He extracted extra bounce to outwit Virat Kohli (12) and stood triumphant in his ploy.
Virat stood tall to chop the ball away but gave away an edge straight to Josh Inglis behind the stumps and capped off a maiden-wicket over. This was the first instance when Virat was back in the pavilion on a score less than 40 during a chase in IPL 2025.
Mayank Agarwal, who came in as an impact substitute along with Philip Salt, decimated Jamieson in the final over of the powerplay to draw out 21 runs from it.
Punjab captain Shreyas Iyer introduced Musheer Khan into the attack to turn the winds in their favour. Shreyas's decision paid off as Musheer trapped Mayank in front of the stumps on 19(13).
Punjab's resistance faded away as Salt's scathing attack continued. He brought up his half-century in just 23 deliveries in the ninth over. Skipper Rajat Patidar applied the finishing touches with a flashy shot to smoke the ball into the stands with a slog-sweep to power RCB into the final.
Earlier in the fixture, within the powerplay itself, PBKS sunk to 48/4. Marcus Stoinis (26 in 17 balls, with two fours and two sixes) was the only one to cross the 20-run mark for PBKS. Spinner Suyash Sharma also took three priceless wickets, which destroyed PBKS' middle-order.
After electing to bowl first, RCB was off to a dream start. Pace trio of Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Yash Dayal and Josh Hazlewood was breathing fire in the powerplay.
In the second over, a fine catch at covers by Krunal Pandya removed Priyansh Arya for a five-ball seven, giving Yash the first wicket. PBKS was 9/1 in 1.2 overs.
Despite this early setback, Prabhsimran kept his attacking intent on, smashing Yash and Bhuvneshwar for some boundaries. However, he edged a delivery to wicketkeeper-batter Jitesh Sharma, for 18 in just 10 balls, with two fours and a six. Bhuvneshwar got his first wicket. PBKS was 27/2 in three overs.
Josh Hazlewood marked his return to action from injury with a bang, getting the big wicket of skipper Shreyas Iyer for just two in three balls, with yet another feathered edge landing into Jitesh's hands. Josh Inglis, in the battle of Aussies, succumbed to Hazlewood for just four in seven balls, with Bhuvneshwar taking the catch. PBKS was 38/4 in 5.1 overs.
At the end of six overs, PBKS was 48/4 in six overs, Marcus Stoinis (10*) and Nehal Wadhera (8*) unbeaten.
Nehal did not last long either as the ball got the thick edge of his bat and crashed into his leg stump, giving Yash another wicket. PBKS was 50/5 in 6.3 overs.
The hosts' slump worsened as in the eighth over, spinner Suyash Sharma cleaned up Shashank Singh (3) and Impact Sub Musheer Khan (0) for single-digits, sinking them to 60/7 in 8.5 overs.
At the end of 10 overs, PBKS was 71/7, with Stoinis (26*) and Azmatullah Omarzai (2*) unbeaten.
PBKS' bid to score even 100 runs was under danger as a brilliant delivery from Suyash cleaned up Stoinis for 26 in 17 balls, with two fours and two sixes. PBKS was 78/8 in 10.3 overs.
Harpreet Brar and Omarzai tried to put together a partnership, but Romario Shepherd cleaned Brar up for four, reducing PBKS to 97/9 in 13.3 overs.
PBKS reached the 100-run mark in 13.5 overs.
Omarzai was the last one to go, edging the ball to Jitesh, who took a brilliant catch to give Hazlewood his third wicket. PBKS was all out for 101 in 14.1 overs.
Suyash (3/17) and Hazlewood (3/21) were the leading bowlers for RCB, with Yash getting 2/26 in four overs. Bhuvneshwar and Romario got a wicket each. (ANI)

Ben Stokes says ICC must reassess the system for slow over-rate penalties
England captain Ben Stokes is not signing on the over rate related paperwork after his team was docked two World Test Championship (WTC) points for slow over rate during the Lord's Test against India. England won the match but slow over rate cost them two crucial WTC points, reducing their tally to 22. Stokes said the International Cricket Council (ICC) needs to review the existing rules for over rate considering different conditions around the world. I'm not signing the form, no. Over rate isn't something that I worry about, but that's not saying that I purposely slow things down. I do understand the frustration around it, but I honestly think there needs to be a real hard look at how it's structured, Stokes said in the pre-match press conference here on Tuesday. You can't have the same rules in Asia where spin is bowling 70 percent of the overs to have the same laws in New Zealand, Australia, England, where it's going to be 70, 80 percent of seam bowled, because the spinner's over takes less time than the seamer's over. Common sense would think that you should look at changing how the over-rates are timed in different continents, Stokes reasoned. Stokes feels, at times, there is a need to slow the game down and that also impacts the over rate. I think also the over rates obviously have gone down over the course of quite a few years now. I wonder if scoring rates have got anything to do with that as well. The ball's getting hit to the boundary more often. It's obviously going to take a lot longer. I can understand it from an external point of view around the overs. I really do. But it's a very tough thing to do when I feel there's more to it than just getting round, getting told, 'Oh, just quicken up. Get through your overs.' There's a lot that actually goes on out on the field. You've got fast bowlers bending their back consistently. Throughout the course of a game, the time of overs is going to come down. You've just got tired bodies. We played for five days. That was our 15th day of cricket. Stokes a mid-game injury to a slower bowler also could jeopardise the over rate scenario. We, obviously, had an injury to Bash (Shoaib Bashir), a spinner, so we couldn't turn to our spinner as much as we would've liked to on day five, so we had to throw seam at them for pretty much the whole day. That's obviously going to slow things down. There are periods in the game where you do try and just slow everything down, more tactically if anything, like that, said the England captain. Stokes highlighted the issue of over rate is extremely simplified at times. I think there's just so much that influences how your over rates can be affected, that it can't just be as simple as this is the time, this is what you need to do, because you want to keep the quality of cricket as high as you possibly can. And there are times in games where there isn't a game on the line where you will just throw the ball to spinner to get your overs round, but then that's just... you're playing in an international game where you're just trying to get your over rate back. I don't think people want to come and watch that, he said. And luckily Baz has known Gilbert for a long, long time. Stokes was delighted to get associated with a someone as experienced as Enoka. I'm sure you've all looked up Gilbert's CV. Pretty good. So yeah, he's come in, we spent some time around the team. I think he's been able to put into words what we want to do a lot better than what me and Baz would ever be able to do, added the skipper.

The injury-prone Mayank Yadav, who burst onto the scene last year, underwent back surgery conducted by Dr Rowan Schouten in Christchurch, New Zealand, last month. "He's out for six to eight months," a reliable source told this paper on Wednesday. Troubled by a back injury, Mayank played only two matches for LSG this season before breaking down again. In an injury-plagued career, the 23-year-old Delhi pacer has played just three T20Is for India, against Bangladesh last year. Both Avesh and Mohsin underwent knee surgeries conducted by renowned Mumbai-based orthopedic surgeon Dr Dinshaw Pardiwala (who has operated on Jasprit Bumrah, Rishabh Pant, and many others). The knee injury had troubled Avesh during the 2024-25 domestic season, and he was forced to miss Madhya Pradesh's last Ranji Trophy league match. The injury also forced Avesh to miss the initial stage of IPL 2025. He finished with 13 wickets in 13 matches. Avesh's last India appearance was in December last year in an ODI in Paarl against South Africa. Overall, the 28-year-old pacer has taken 36 wickets in 33 white-ball internationals (25 T20Is & eight ODIs) for India. Rajat Patidar likely to miss Duleep Trophy Royal Challengers Bengaluru's (RCB) IPL 2025 captain Rajat Patidar is also set to miss the Duleep Trophy, as the Madhya Pradesh batter has been advised to "take rest" by the BCCI's medical team. 'Rajat is training at MP's off-season camp, but he's not been batting, as he has been advised to take a break and recover from the injury in his right hand by the BCCI's medical team. Meet Anshul Kamboj - Haryana pacer who took 10 wickets in an innings in Ranji Trophy, makes India debut in Manchester
Haryana pacer Anshul Kamboj was handed his India Test debut on Wednesday against England in the fourth Test at Old Trafford in Manchester. Kamboj, who was a part of the India A squad during their tour of England last month, was a late addition to the senior side after the visiting side were hit by a couple of injuries. Kamboj's debut comes in after pacer Arshdeep Singh was ruled out of the fourth Test due to an injury he suffered on his bowling hand at nets. India also made another two changes - Shardul Thakur and Sai Sudharsan replacing of Nitish Kumar Reddy and Karun Nair. Kamboj thus became the second Indian player to be handed his debut in the ongoing Test series. Sudharsan was handed his Test debut in the first Test in Leeds which India lost by five wickets. Born in Karnal, Kamboj made his first class debut for Haryana in 2022. The young pacer came into limelight when he took 17 wickets in 10 matches in their triumphant Vijay Hazare campaign in 2023. Kamboj's ability to exploit the subtle movement caught the eyes of IPL scouts and was signed by Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League (IPL). With very little chances at Mumbai Indians, Kamboj got traded to Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2025. He played eight matches for his eight wickets at an economy of exactly 8. His moment of magic came in November last year when he became just the third pacer in Ranji Trophy to take all 10 wickets in an innings against Kerala. For hi 10 wickets, Kamboj bowled 30.1 overs, including nine maidens and conceded 49 runs. For India A against England Lions, Kamboj played two games and picked up three wickets. But the highlight of Kamboj's stay in the United Kingdom was the 51 not out in the second game in Northampton in the second innings in a drawn encounter.
