The best of India in England, Part 3: Ajinkya Rahane and Ishant Sharma, the Lords of Lord's in India's stunning win

Having ridden on second-innings half-centuries from debutant Stuart Binny, batting at No. 8, and No. 9 Bhuvneshwar Kumar to secure an honourable draw in the first Test in Nottingham, India travelled to Lord's Test high on belief and morale. With everything to play for in their first five-Test series in England since 1959, Mahendra Singh Dhoni's men were quietly confident of delivering the first strike. But their hopes took a beating on being put in by Alastair Cook. Shikhar Dhawan perished in the third over and while three of the top four got into the 20s, India found James Anderson too hot to handle, slumping to 145 for seven when the Lancastrian trapped Binny in front. Fortunately for them, Ajinkya Rahane was still around. The little Mumbaikar had earned a reputation for scoring big and attractively overseas – five of his first six Tests were 'away', and included efforts of 96 in Durban and 118 in Wellington in the preceding eight months – and enhanced his stature with a magnificent, counter-attacking 103 full of breathtaking strokes. Rahane cut a dashing figure, raking off-side shots competing with pulls as he carried Bhuvneshwar along in an eighth-wicket stand that yielded 90. India eked out 150 for the last three wickets to post 295, below par but a massive improvement from the depths they found themselves in on Binny's dismissal. Building on his batting heroics, Bhuvneshwar used swing and the infamous Lord's slope to telling effect, winkling out Cook, his opening partner Sam Robson and Ian Bell in no time. And when Ravindra Jadeja trapped Joe Root leg before for a laboured 13, India were even eying a first-innings lead with the hosts struggling at 113 for four. But like Rahane had on day one, the left-handed Gary Ballance – who would later also play Test cricket for Zimbabwe – orchestrated a stirring rescue act alongside Moeen Ali as 98 came for the fifth wicket. Ballance's 110 was measured, 203 balls, 15 fours, when he and Moeen were evicted within three runs of each other. Enter Liam Plunkett in a flurry of boundaries, muscling his team to a lead of 24 with useful associations with Matt Prior and last man Anderson. The track was still very good for batting and India's top order cashed in, led by the implacable M Vijay's patient 95. Plunkett, who had bowled Virat Kohli first ball, triggered a few flutters with a superb mid-innings burst but from 245 for seven at Vijay's fall, India rallied to 342, thanks to Jadeja and Bhuvneshwar, and their 99-run stand for the eighth wicket. Two days previously, Jadeja had been involved in an altercation with Anderson in India's first innings, with the England pacer allegedly pushing and abusing the India all-rounder in the narrow corridor leading to the two dressing rooms. It resulted in post-match hearings by Judicial Commissioner Gordon Lewis, which ended without any major sanctions, but Jadeja had already punished Anderson and England for the slight with a game-changing 68, off a mere 57 deliveries, by channeling his anger and hurt. England had a day and a half to knock off 319 but stumbled to 72 for four with Ishant Sharma emerging as the early hero, knocking over Cook and Bell. Having spent an anxious night pondering what lay ahead at 105 for four, England made untroubled progress in the first session of the final day through Root and Moeen. The runs didn't come at a frenetic pace, but each over negotiated without alarm adding to India's frustration and a sense of 'what if'. Almost in desperation, Dhoni instructed Ishant to bowl short and at the batters' body. It was an instruction that was to bear spectacular dividends. Moeen's travails against the short ball are well documented; off the last delivery before lunch, as Ishant fired the ball towards his helmet, the left-hander closed his eyes and held his bat up in front of his face. The ball lobbed off his gloves to Pujara at short-leg; India's collective yell could be heard all the way back home. A pesky 101-run stand had been broken, the timing of Moeen's dismissal most opportune. Dhoni didn't need a second invitation to ask Ishant to persist with the short-ball ploy when the second session began, triggering a bizarre phase of play. India had three, sometimes four, men patrolling the on-side boundary and England appeared to allow their egos to get the better of them. Prior, Ben Stokes and Root were all caught in the deep pulling Ishant (7/74) and it was in the fitness of things that Jadeja scored a direct hit to run Anderson out and help India complete a sensational 95-run heist. Who would have thought an Indian pacer would bounce out the opposition on a day-five surface! India: 295 all out in 91.4 overs (Cheteshwar Pujara 28, Virat Kohli 25, Ajinkya Rahane 103, Bhuvneshwar Kumar 36; James Anderson 4-60, Stuart Broad 2-79, Ben Stokes 2-40) and 342 all out in 103.1 overs (M Vijay 95, Shikhar Dhawan 32, Pujara 43, Ravindra Jadeja 58, Bhuvneshwar 52; Stokes 3-51, Liam Plunkett 3-65, Moeen Ali 2-28) beat England: 319 all out in 105.5 overs (Gary Ballance 110, Mooen 32, Plunkett 55 n.o.; Bhuvneshwar 6-82, Jadeja 2-46) and 223 all out in 88.2 overs (Ballance 27, Joe Root 66, Moeen 39; Ishant Sharma 7-74) by 95 runs. Player of the Match: Ishant Sharma.

'Perfect Moment': Bhuvneshwar Kumar Salutes RCB Fans After First-Ever IPL Win

Bhuvneshwar picked up two wickets for RCB in the IPL 2025 final played against PBKS at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on June 3. Bhuvneshwar Kumar dedicated Royal Challengers Bengaluru's maiden title victory on Tuesday, June 3, to the franchise's loyal supporters, who never gave up on them despite years of heartbreak in the Indian Premier League. The experienced RCB seamer saluted the team's emotional fanbase that kept filling the stands and sent prayers for the team's success. Bhuvneshwar also made a point to remember former RCB stars, including legends AB de Villiers and Chris Gayle, for their contributions. 'It means a lot. Everyone had been waiting for this moment for 17 years. With such a massive fanbase and so many prayers behind us, it's a perfect moment for us, for all the former RCB players, and everyone who's been a part of this journey," said the veteran quickly in a post-match interaction with Royal Challengers Bengaluru. In a video posted by the franchise, Bhuvneshwar hailed the fans for acting as a motivation to end the painstaking 18-year trophy drought. Released by his former franchise Sunrisers Hyderabad, Bhuvneshwar saw uncertainty ahead of him as his disappointing performances in IPL 2024 pulled the Indian seamer's stocks drastically. But his fortunes changed at the pre-season auction where RCB showed faith in the ageing IPL great with a bid of 10.75 crores. Known for his new-ball swing and death-overs expertise, Bhuvneshwar emerged as a dark horse in RCB's attack, taking 17 wickets in 14 matches and forming a great bowling duo with spearhead Josh Hazlewood. While Hazlewood got the accolades for picking 22 scalps in RCB's inspiring run, Bhuvneshwar once again played an underrated role, including in the final, where he took two crucial wickets of Punjab Kings batters Nahel Wadhera and Marcus Stoinis. The twin strikes curtailed the wings of a power-packed PBKS line-up that fell six runs short of ultimate glory after RCB had posted an imposing 190/9 in the high-pressure finale. Bhuvneshwar had played a similar role in Qualifier 1 versus the same opponent, dismissing in-form opener Prabhsimran Singh early to dismantle PBKS' plans. The 2016 and 2017 Purple Cap winner has a career IPL tally of 190 wickets to his name with an economy rate of only 7.69. First Published: June 05, 2025, 23:58 IST

RCB's Bhuvneshwar Kumar four wickets away from IPL milestone

Ahmedabad (Gujarat) [India], June 3 (ANI): Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar will eye a milestone during the Indian Premier League (IPL) final against Punjab Kings (PBKS), as he is just four wickets away from becoming the first pacer to touch 200-wicket mark in the league's history and second bowler overall. As RCB and PBKS chase their first IPL title, Bhuvneshwar's bowling will have a crucial role to play at the powerplay and death. He is RCB's third-highest wicket-taker, with 15 scalps in 13 games at an average of 29.66, with an economy rate of 9.27. His best bowling figures in this edition are 3/33. With four more wickets, Bhuvneshwar will join Punjab Kings (PBKS) spinner Yuzvendra Chahal, who has 220 IPL wickets in 173 matches at an average of 22.70, with the best score of 5/40. Clinical RCB trounce PBKS to punch tickets for IPL final with emphatic 8-wicket triumph

Mullanpur (Punjab) [India], May 29 (ANI): Royal Challengers Bengaluru blazed past table-toppers Punjab Kings to punch their tickets to Ahmedabad for the final of the 18th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) with a commanding 8-wicket triumph on Thursday. After a spirited bowling display spearheaded by Josh Hazlewood and Suyash Sharma's three-wicket hauls, Bengaluru batters breathed fire to trounce Punjab by adopting an aggressive attacking policy. It was one-way traffic from the first over of the first innings, and the batters ensured it stayed the same in the second. In defence of their trifling 101-run total, Punjab showed resistance as Kyle Jamieson turned the clock and rekindled the memory of the inaugural World Test Championship final. He extracted extra bounce to outwit Virat Kohli (12) and stood triumphant in his ploy. Virat stood tall to chop the ball away but gave away an edge straight to Josh Inglis behind the stumps and capped off a maiden-wicket over. This was the first instance when Virat was back in the pavilion on a score less than 40 during a chase in IPL 2025. Mayank Agarwal, who came in as an impact substitute along with Philip Salt, decimated Jamieson in the final over of the powerplay to draw out 21 runs from it. Punjab captain Shreyas Iyer introduced Musheer Khan into the attack to turn the winds in their favour. Shreyas's decision paid off as Musheer trapped Mayank in front of the stumps on 19(13). Punjab's resistance faded away as Salt's scathing attack continued. He brought up his half-century in just 23 deliveries in the ninth over. Skipper Rajat Patidar applied the finishing touches with a flashy shot to smoke the ball into the stands with a slog-sweep to power RCB into the final. Earlier in the fixture, within the powerplay itself, PBKS sunk to 48/4. Marcus Stoinis (26 in 17 balls, with two fours and two sixes) was the only one to cross the 20-run mark for PBKS. Spinner Suyash Sharma also took three priceless wickets, which destroyed PBKS' middle-order. After electing to bowl first, RCB was off to a dream start. Pace trio of Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Yash Dayal and Josh Hazlewood was breathing fire in the powerplay. In the second over, a fine catch at covers by Krunal Pandya removed Priyansh Arya for a five-ball seven, giving Yash the first wicket. PBKS was 9/1 in 1.2 overs. Despite this early setback, Prabhsimran kept his attacking intent on, smashing Yash and Bhuvneshwar for some boundaries. However, he edged a delivery to wicketkeeper-batter Jitesh Sharma, for 18 in just 10 balls, with two fours and a six. Bhuvneshwar got his first wicket. PBKS was 27/2 in three overs. Josh Hazlewood marked his return to action from injury with a bang, getting the big wicket of skipper Shreyas Iyer for just two in three balls, with yet another feathered edge landing into Jitesh's hands. Josh Inglis, in the battle of Aussies, succumbed to Hazlewood for just four in seven balls, with Bhuvneshwar taking the catch. PBKS was 38/4 in 5.1 overs. At the end of six overs, PBKS was 48/4 in six overs, Marcus Stoinis (10*) and Nehal Wadhera (8*) unbeaten. Nehal did not last long either as the ball got the thick edge of his bat and crashed into his leg stump, giving Yash another wicket. PBKS was 50/5 in 6.3 overs. The hosts' slump worsened as in the eighth over, spinner Suyash Sharma cleaned up Shashank Singh (3) and Impact Sub Musheer Khan (0) for single-digits, sinking them to 60/7 in 8.5 overs. At the end of 10 overs, PBKS was 71/7, with Stoinis (26*) and Azmatullah Omarzai (2*) unbeaten. PBKS' bid to score even 100 runs was under danger as a brilliant delivery from Suyash cleaned up Stoinis for 26 in 17 balls, with two fours and two sixes. PBKS was 78/8 in 10.3 overs. Harpreet Brar and Omarzai tried to put together a partnership, but Romario Shepherd cleaned Brar up for four, reducing PBKS to 97/9 in 13.3 overs. PBKS reached the 100-run mark in 13.5 overs. Omarzai was the last one to go, edging the ball to Jitesh, who took a brilliant catch to give Hazlewood his third wicket. PBKS was all out for 101 in 14.1 overs. Suyash (3/17) and Hazlewood (3/21) were the leading bowlers for RCB, with Yash getting 2/26 in four overs. Bhuvneshwar and Romario got a wicket each. (ANI)

Mullanpur (Punjab) [India], May 29 (ANI): Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) pacers dominated Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the qualifier one, with Josh Hazlewood and Bhuvneshwar Kumar topping the powerplay bowling charts in the season. Bhuvneshwar, Hazlewood along with Yash Dayal and Suyash Sharma made a lightwork of a strong PBKS line-up, bundling them out for 101 runs in a clash that gives the winner a direct spot in the final. Hazlewood and Bhuvneshwar have the best economy rate in the powerplay (overs one to six) this season, with 7.20 and 8.00 respectively. Hazlewood has nine wickets in the powerplay and a dot ball percentage of 55.8, while Bhuvneshwar has eight scalps in this phase, with a dot ball percentage of 50.0. Hazlewood is the top wicket-taker for RCB and overall third-highest, with 21 scalps in 11 innings at an average of 15.80 and best figures of 4/33. His economy rate is 8.33. On the other hand, Bhuvneshwar has 15 wickets in 13 matches at an average of 29.66, with an economy rate of 9.27 and best figures of 3/33. He is the third-highest wicket-taker for RCB and overall 13th. The score of 101 by PBKS is the joint-third lowest total in an IPL playoff match. The lowest total in a playoff match is by Deccan Chargers against RCB, who scored just 82 in 2010 during the third-place playoff match, followed by 87 scored by Delhi Capitals (DC) against Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the semifinal of the 2008 edition. LSG also scored 101 against Mumbai Indians (MI) in the 2023 eliminator. 14.1 overs is the least overs batted by any team in the IPL playoffs. The previous least was 16.1 overs by Delhi Capitals against RR in IPL was reduced to 48/4 in the powerplay itself, with Bhuvneshwar, Hazlewood and Yash firing all cylinders. Marcus Stoinis (26 in 17 balls, with two fours and two sixes) and Azmatullah Omarzai (18 in 12 balls, with a four and six) pushed PBKS to 101 in 14.1 overs. Suyash Sharma (3/17) and Hazlewood (3/21) were the leading bowlers for RCB, with Yash getting 2/26 in four overs. Bhuvneshwar and Romario got a wicket each. (ANI)
