Penang Increases Monthly Allowance For KAFA Teachers From July
Deputy Chief Minister I, Datuk Dr Mohamad Abdul Hamid, said KAFA headteachers will receive a higher allowance of RM1,600 compared to RM1,350 previously, marking a RM250 increment.
'During last year's state legislative assembly sitting, I announced that a comprehensive review was being carried out to strengthen KAFA education in Penang. This demonstrates the concern shown by the Penang Islamic Religious Council (MAINPP) and the state government for the welfare of KAFA educators.
'To appreciate KAFA teachers in Penang, I am pleased to share two announcements: the increase in allowance, and a special maternity assistance for female KAFA teachers appointed on or after January 1 this year, who are eligible for RM1,100 per month for two months during their maternity leave,' he said in a Facebook post.
In addition, RM150,000 has been allocated to enhance training programmes for KAFA teachers in the state.
Mohamad, who is also MAINPP president, said these new measures will result in an additional financial commitment of RM4.2 million annually, raising the total KAFA allocation to RM8.5 million per year.
He also announced that all KAFA premises in Penang will return to a standardised five-day operational schedule starting July 1, a practice that had been halted for several years due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
In the education sector, he said MAINPP is increasing its education budget to RM35 million for 2024 and 2025, including introducing new scholarship allocations for Polytechnic and Form Six students.
'Last month, MAINPP also allocated RM6.5 million to distribute 8,740 tablet devices to 263 primary and secondary schools. This supports the goal of digitalising education and aims to bridge the digital divide among students by 2030,' he added.

He said the leaders of both countries managed to hold discussions on several matters during the Prime Minister's brief stopover in France en route to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to attend the BRICS Summit earlier this month. 'It is inaccurate to say that the Prime Minister's visit was not meaningful. 'It was indeed meaningful, especially because the Prime Minister held two-way talks with French President Emmanuel Macron. 'Both leaders discussed several issues, including bilateral ties. The same applied to the Prime Minister's stopover in Italy,' Mohamad said in the Dewan Rakyat on Monday (July 21), responding to a supplementary question from Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal (PN-Machang). Wan Ahmad Fayhsal had questioned why Anwar was not accorded full state honours during his visit to France, unlike former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad in 1997, former Singapore prime minister Lee Hsien Loong in 2018, and Indonesian president Prabowo Subianto, who was invited to attend the Bastille Day celebrations. He described Anwar's visit as a 'missed opportunity,' particularly with Malaysia currently chairing Asean. Mohamad clarified that Anwar's stopover in France was not an official visit. 'It was not an official visit — that would have been an entirely different matter. 'If it had been official, we would have flown directly to the country rather than making a stopover,' he said. He added that the Prime Minister had accepted invitations from both France and Italy to stop over and was accorded a high level of respect during the visits, including the inspection of a guard of honour. Earlier, Mohamad emphasised the importance of Asean engaging with countries within the Indo-Pacific region. 'The Asean Outlook on the Indo-Pacific is a framework agreed upon by all Asean members. 'Asean cannot afford to be excluded from participating in such frameworks and developments in the Indo-Pacific,' he said. He pointed out that other regional frameworks, such as AUKUS and the Quad, also promote a free and open Indo-Pacific. AUKUS is a trilateral security partnership involving Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States, while the Quad comprises India, Australia, Japan and the United States. Mohamad said the Asean Outlook on the Indo-Pacific framework is designed to ensure Asean remains free, peaceful and neutral. Regarding the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia (TAC), he noted that 57 countries have signed the agreement, with Uruguay and Algeria being the latest signatories. The TAC, originally drafted in 1976, is a peace treaty initially signed by Asean member states.

SARA aid provides business capital for housewife
PADANG BESAR: RM100 may seem like a small amount to some, but for Nursyafiqah Sobri, 31, it has become a 'golden capital' that is helping to transform her family's life. Each month, the housewife from Bukit Keteri carefully sets aside RM30 from the RM100 Basic Rahmah Contribution (SARA) assistance received by her husband to use as capital for making and selling traditional kuih. "Alhamdulillah, my husband get to receive the SARA assistance. Although it is only RM100 a month to buy necessities, it truly helps ease our family's financial burden. "Every month, I use RM30 of the assistance to buy flour for making the kuih, and the rest goes towards purchasing necessities like rice," she said. Nursyafiqah, who has two children aged six and 11, said she sells kuih such as cucur badak, keria and popia, which she distributes to several shops in her area. Although her home-based kuih business earns her between RM50 to RM80 a week, Nursyafiqah remains grateful as the modest income still helps ease her husband's burden in supporting the family. "Some days, the cakes sell days, they don't. But I keep making them because at least there's still some income," she said. Nursyafiqah shared that her husband, who works as a security guard earning RM1,700 a month, is the pillar of the family. In addition to raising their two children, the couple also care for their elderly parents who live with them. She believes the SARA assistance is a timely and much-needed initiative by the government, providing meaningful relief to families like hers. The monthly aid, she said, is something they look forward to. "I just hope the government will consider increasing the monthly SARA assistance from time to time as the prices of essential goods continue to rise," she said. Under Budget 2025, the annual SARA assistance has been increased to RM2,100, compared to RM1,200 in the previous year. This initiative aligns with the Madani Economic Framework, which prioritises empowering the lives of low-income individuals through equitable opportunities, improved living standards, and comprehensive social protection. To further enhance public convenience, the government has expanded the range of goods eligible for purchase under the SARA programme to 14 categories. Additionally, the number of registered participating retail outlets and supermarkets has grown significantly, rising from 700 last year to over 4,100 premises nationwide as of July 2025.

Speaking during the monthly assembly with staff of the Prime Minister's Department, Anwar stressed that although the government remained open to criticism, he will not remain silent if the nation's stability was under threat. 'Some are saying I should step down. I've heard claims that thousands will be joining the rally. The police briefed me and I said go ahead. It's not that we want to block it,' he said. He was referring to the 'Turun Anwar' rally scheduled to take place in the capital this Saturday. Anwar also slammed provocative remarks claiming that the government would be forced to change without going through a general election. 'When they say they want to force a change in government without waiting for the general election, that's already strange. 'I said it's fine. I told the Speaker, if there's a motion of no confidence on the first day of the Dewan Rakyat sitting, I'll be waiting,' he said. Anwar also described the chaos-driven narrative pushed by certain quarters as an attempt to spark political instability and fear among the people. 'Let me remind you, while the government is tolerant, we will stand firm when the Constitution is challenged. I hope we remain peaceful. Why the spite? What is really happening?,' he said. He added that a small group was painting the picture that the country was no longer safe and that people were living in desperation. 'That's the same chant being echoed, including at the stadium in Kedah recently,' he said. Anwar said if anyone was unhappy with his performance as Prime Minister, they have every right to voice criticism and call for change through democratic means. 'Criticise me, no problem. If people say this Prime Minister doesn't know how to run the country and should be replaced, I've got no issue. 'Plan for someone better to take over, I'm fine with that,' he said. However, he reminded that any attempt to spark unrest would only harm the country's stability. 'If things start off like this, stirring up chaos, no nation will be safe. All the good progress we've made will be erased if we can't ensure political stability,' he said.
