Lady Gaga describes Doechii as ‘immediately legendary'

Rhyl Journal10-07-2025
The US rapper and singer, 26, who recently performed at Glastonbury, is best known for her hit song Denial Is A River.
The Poker Face star was reportedly an inspiration to Doechii, whose real name is Jaylah Hickmon, when she was growing up.
Speaking about Doechii, who appears on the cover of British Vogue, Gaga told the magazine: 'You don't often see someone come out of the gate with a pen that feels immediately legendary. That's Doechii to me.
'I fell in love with her music and her raw, deeply personal perspective. The power in her words, her vulnerability, the way she rhymes with this wild mix of audacity and emotional precision – it struck me to the core.'
Doechii presented Gaga with the Innovator award at the 2025 iHeartRadio Music Awards, describing the singer as a 'lifeline'.
She said: 'Lady Gaga wasn't just a pop star she was a lifeline. Gaga taught us that it was OK to be our real selves.'
Doechii released her first EP, Oh The Places You'll Go, in 2020, and one of her tracks, Yucky Blucky Fruitcake, went viral.
Her rise to fame, however, came a few years later with the release of Alligator Bites Never Heal in 2024, which includes the songs Denial Is A River, Catfish and Nissan Altima.
Months later the rapper secured her first Grammy award for Best Rap Album, with nominations for Best Rap Performance and Best New Albums at the 67th award ceremony.
She is also behind the viral hit Anxiety, after the YouTube video of Doechii singing the song, which samples the 2011 hit Somebody That I Used To Know by Gotye and Kimbra, resurfaced.
The positive online response encouraged the rapper to release the full version, which marked the first time she reached number three in the UK singles chart.

Huge 00s music star reveals he wants Glastonbury 2027 headline slot as he bares soul on new album Commitment

It's been 25 years since he released his debut album BORN TO DO IT BORN TO DO IT Huge 00s music star reveals he wants Glastonbury 2027 headline slot as he bares soul on new album Commitment Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) IT'S been a huge year for Craig David so far, with an arena tour completed, his new album Commitment dropping on Friday and the 25th anniversary of debut record Born To Do It next Thursday. When I catch up over Zoom with the nicest man in music, I tell him I'm desperately hoping to see him at the next Glastonbury in 2027. Sign up for the Entertainment newsletter Sign up 9 Craig David's new album, Commitment, drops on Friday as he celebrates the 25th anniversary of Born To Do It Credit: Ejatu Shaw 9 Craig says he would love to play Glastonbury again, 10 years after he was last on the Pyramid Stage Credit: Reuters The date would fall almost exactly ten years to the day he last graced the Pyramid Stage — and I think we can make it happen. Craig smiles: 'You're my lucky charm, Ellie. You put good things out into the space so stay tuned. 'I would love to go back. You know what Glastonbury means to any artist. 'When I performed on the Pyramid Stage, it was one of the most iconic moments for me. "I could see that there were so many people from so many different walks of life who'd come to see a myriad of different artists. 'I'd never seen so many people and I thought that is what it is normally like. 'People were like, 'No, Craig, the crowd went over the bank at the back and that is huge.' It was just amazing.' The reaction to Craig's ninth album Commitment I'm sure will be just as impressive. In my eyes, it's Craig's best body of work since Born To Do It. 'Creating Commitment was in a lot of respects very similar to Born To Do It,' Craig explains. 'It didn't feel like I was under this pressure to deliver. It felt really relaxed and cathartic. Craig David gives huge update on new album and reveals massive collaboration with Tiwa Savage 'I was listening to the music I grew up listening to, like when I made the first album. "It got me into a vibe and then I'd go in the studio until 4am. 'I was just loving it, having so much fun.' New single Rain, which is out now, is classic Craig — clean, crisp and showcasing his lyricism and vocals at their best. Themes of love and loss, as with most of Craig's songs, feature heavily on the record with beautiful tracks Perfect Love and So Special crafted with Wretch 32. Craig explains: 'Wretch is known for his lyricism as a rapper but in the studio he was doing these vocals and I'm like, 'Bro, let me hear that again.' 'His source of where his melodies come from are like Earth, Wind, and Fire. "One of his favourite albums is Hotel California. 'His melodies on Perfect Love, I'm thinking, 'Wretch, what is this?' This is like fire in a booth.' Leave The Light On, Craig's collaboration with Louisa Johnson, is equally as impressive, with Becky Hill putting her stamp on tune as a co-writer. 'PERSONAL TRACK' The result is, as Craig correctly puts it: 'A dance banger.' He adds: 'Becky came in for a songwriting session and it wasn't going to be a song with Becky as the front artist. "She sang it and it was amazing. I said, 'Becky, where are we going from here?' Unanimously Louisa's name came up. 'She can sing these real soul diva vocals you get from artists like Aretha Franklin. 'I reached out and, when you have Becky Hill to do a demo, it's very difficult to be like . . . you're going toe to toe with one of the best vocalists in this country. "But she did it justice. The ad-libs were like out of Mariah Carey's book.' My favourite track on the record is Dominoes, a stripped back and lyrically powerful song which I feel is Craig's most personal track on Commitment. The opening lyrics are poignant, with Craig singing: 'Told you to stand up, told you to face up, and you'd believe. 'Because it's easy to man up being the man you're supposed to be. 'Under the surface you're getting tired of playing the role, and you wish it was different but it's all you know.' 9 Becky Hill co-wrote Leave The Light On, Craig's collaboration with Louisa Johnson Credit: Getty Craig says of Dominoes: 'It's one of my favourites from the album. "I hope that it has the same impact on people who listen to it. 'Even if you didn't know you needed it. The whole point of Dominoes is that we all fall and that's OK.' As well as shining through on this album track, Craig's kindness extends to his everyday life and desire to give back. He is a proud ambassador for Shelter and earlier this year took his mum Tina back to the flat they lived in when he was a kid, as part of a campaign to call on the Government to provide more social housing. Craig says: 'I met the family there now, a single mother with three children and that was a very similar situation to me and my mum. 'I grew up on what was called a council estate then. If my mum didn't have that it would have been very different circumstances for us. 'FOUND FIRE' 'I went to my bedroom where I recorded Born To Do It, I was looking out at the same car park. 'I thought, it's been 25 years or more since I left this flat. "If the walls could speak they would be like, 'I remember when you were mumbling some distant lyrics into a dictaphone.' 'I surprised the family there with a few songs I wrote in the house, Walking Away, Fill Me In and 7 Days. 'It was one of the most special moments because those walls, the sofa, the living room - it all looked the same.' Born To Do It changed his life. Craig has amassed 16 Top Ten singles and two No1 records in the years that followed. With Commitment, Craig has found his fire again. 'You start to get back to why I originally made music,' Craig explains. 'It's crazy when it's the ninth album in. 'To have a career spanning 25 years, I'm just really grateful. Ellie, it's a crazy journey we're on.' From Friday it's going to get even crazier, Craig. Dua is known for her healthy eating and punishing workout routines. She is currently on a break from her Radical Optimism tour until it heads to Canada on September 1. Opening up about keeping in shape, Dua said: 'I try and stay as healthy as possible whenever I can. "I'm never one to stop myself having naughty treats, but I try and limit it to days when I'm not as busy because if I do eat a doughnut, it usually puts me in a food coma.' But she admitted: 'Beans on toast . . . that's, like, one of my favourite English meals. Calvin Harris and Vick Hope welcome first baby and reveal powerful name

Calvin Harris and Vick Hope have shared the happy news of the birth of their first child. The couple posted a series of photos with their baby boy, named Micah, on Instagram, including some graphic images from the home water birth itself, such as Vick's placenta. '20th of July our boy arrived. Micah is here! My wife is a superhero and I am in complete awe of her primal wisdom! Just so grateful. We love you so much Micah,' Calvin wrote in the caption to his post. The name Micah has Hebrew origins and translates to 'who is like God?'. The other images include one of Calvin cradling the baby in the sun, lifting his son out of the water and the creation of Vick's (presumably) placenta pills. Vick reposted the first image on her story with the phrase 'my boys' with the sun emoji. The BBC Radio 1 presenter, Vick, 35, has been married to her DJ husband, 41, since September 2023, and announced her pregnancy in May. Friends and family are flocking to the comments to congratulate the new parents. 'Congratulations you 2,' chelceegrimes wrote on Instagram. 'Congratulations guys, hope mama and baby are doing amazing,' thedeanlife echoed. Placentophagy is the postpartum ingestion of the placenta and can be eaten in a variety of manners, including raw, cooked, roasted, dehydrated or encapsulated (the latter of which it appears Vick has opted to do). Women who choose to consume their placenta after birth believe it provides health benefits which could include a boost of energy through nutrients. There are several celebrities who have decided to try out this practice, such as Kourtney Kardashian, who once posted she would be 'sad' when her pills ran out. Hillary Duff has previously consumed a placenta smoothie and Coleen Rooney claimed her placenta pills have helped her beat post-natal depression and replenish her natural hormones. Despite the increasing popularity, some research has debunked the theory that it offers health benefits. In 2015, the BBC reported that a review by Northwestern University found no proven benefits and no research on the potential risks with the lead study author saying: 'Women really don't know what they are ingesting.' 'Massive congrats mate ! Big love,' Camrinwatsin said. 'Soooo happy for you,' annabelahor agreed. Vick decided to share that she was expecting on her drivetime show, Going Home with Vick, Katie and Jamie earlier this year. 'I should say that this is my final week. I wanted to share that with you because we've had such a lovely time over the last few weeks. That time is coming to an end for a bit because I'm going on maternity leave next week,' she said at the time. More Trending Co-host Jamie replied: 'You're an amazing friend, an amazing person, and you're just going to be an amazing mum.' The loved-up couple started dating in 2022 and, after an Ibiza engagement, they got at Hulne Priory in Alnwick, Northumberland with a Glastonbury-inspired wedding. Plenty of famous faces were in attendance, including Big Brother host AJ Odudu and radio presenters Vernon Kay and Scott Mills. Got a story?
