Home Secretary likely to visit Manipur next week
Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan is likely to visit Manipur next week, on June 2 and June 3, in the wake of fresh protests and a 'civil disobedience' call by Meitei groups in the northeastern State over the May 20 incident in Gwaltabi. On that day, security forces allegedly tried to cover the word 'Manipur' on a State transport bus that was ferrying journalists to the hill district of Ukhrul for the Shirui Lily festival.
After arriving in Imphal, the Home Secretary is likely to visit the Kuki-Zo areas in Churachandpur and Kangpokpi to review relief and rehabilitation work and the overall security scenario in the State, officials said.
In an unprecedented turn of events, Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, upon his arrival from Delhi on May 29, had to take a helicopter for the seven-kilometre journey from Imphal Airport to Raj Bhavan as protestors swarmed the roads seeking his apology for the Gwaltabi incident.
The Coordination Committee for Manipur Integrity (COCOMI), an Imphal-based Meitei civil society group, has called for the removal of all top government officials in the State, including the Director General of Police (DGP) and the Chief Secretary. This week, civilians also locked Government of India offices. The civil disobedience call given by COCOMI continues, with journalists boycotting all government functions and events.
After President's Rule was imposed in the State on February 13, there has been a sharp drop in the number of violent incidents, and more than 350 people have been arrested for extortion, abductions, and threatening civilians. However, around 60,000 people who were displaced from their homes when ethnic violence between the Kuki-Zo and Meitei people started in May 2023 are yet to be resettled and continue to live in relief camps. Around 250 people have been killed in the ethnic violence so far.
Several civil society groups and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have demanded the restoration of the democratic set-up, and 10 Manipur legislators met Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla on May 28 at the Raj Bhavan to seek the formation of a 'popular' government.
Earlier, on May 5, BJP's North East in-charge Sambit Patra met former Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, BJP legislators in the valley and hills, and Kuki-Zo and Zomi civil society organisations. After the Gwaltabi incident, representatives of two different Meitei civil society organisations were called to Delhi to meet A.K. Mishra, the Ministry of Home Affairs' (MHA) North-East Adviser.
On April 4, Union Home Minister Amit Shah informed Parliament that both communities in Manipur 'should understand that dialogue is the only way forward,' and that the Union government is not in favour of continuing President's Rule in the State 'even for a single day.' He reiterated that a Manipur High Court order had triggered the violence in the State in May 2023, adding that the interpretation of the order led to insecurities among the tribal community about losing reservation status and it became a 'tribals versus non-tribal' issue.

Union Minister for Finance and Corporate Affairs Nirmala Sitharaman , currently on an official visit to Spain, Portugal, and Brazil, delivered a strong pitch for mobilising private capital for sustainable development at the International Business Forum Leadership Summit titled "From FFD4 Outcome to Implementation: Unlocking the Potential of Private Capital for Sustainable Development" in Seville, Spain. Addressing global leaders and investors, Sitharaman highlighted that while private investment has shown encouraging growth in recent years, thanks to a rise in innovative financial instruments and traditional sources, much more needs to be done. This underscores the urgent need for targeted efforts to overcome investment barriers and better align financial flows with development priorities." Highlighting India's own journey, Sitharaman stressed the importance of addressing perceived investment risks in emerging markets . India, she noted, has taken significant steps to overcome these challenges. Sitharaman stated, "India has addressed this challenge by establishing independent regulators, implementing transparent bidding processes, standardising contracts, and improving the ease of doing business . India has focused on strengthening its banking sector and deepening capital markets to support large-scale financing in infrastructure and industry. She said India's regulatory frameworks now better balance investor protection with innovation and flexibility, creating an enabling environment for long-term investment. One of the standout examples presented by Sitharaman was India's transformation in the renewable energy sector. From just 2.8 GW of solar energy installed in 2014, India has expanded its capacity to over 110 GW. This success, she said, "was enabled by clear national targets, streamlined procurement, and government-backed risk mitigation. This model attracted institutional investors, including pension and sovereign wealth funds." On the sidelines of the FFD4 Summit, Sitharaman also held bilateral meetings with various global leaders. She met Shane Reti, New Zealand's Minister of Science, Innovation and Technology, Universities, Statistics, and Pacific Peoples. Both ministers discussed cooperation in defence, education, technology, and agriculture. The two leaders reaffirmed the shared democratic values and strong people-to-people ties between India and New Zealand. Sitharaman also spoke about India's growing International Financial Services Centre at GIFT City and highlighted investment opportunities in banking, bullion exchange, capital markets, the FinTech ecosystem, insurance, and reinsurance. She also noted the importance of educational ties, with many Indian students pursuing higher education in New Zealand. The Finance Minister also held talks with Reem Alabali-Radovan, Germany's Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development. Sitharaman congratulated her on her new role and discussed cooperation under the India-Germany Green and Sustainable Development Partnership. The discussions included collaboration in areas such as green energy, urban mobility, sustainable urban development, and ecological livelihoods. Minister Alabali-Radovan expressed interest in deepening bilateral ties and enhancing cooperation with India. Sitharaman is leading an Indian delegation from the Department of Economic Affairs during this official trip from June 30 to July 5. Her itinerary includes a visit to Lisbon, Portugal, where she will hold a bilateral meeting with the Portuguese Finance Minister and interact with the Indian diaspora and investors. In Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, she will address the 10th Annual Meeting of the New Development Bank (NDB) as India's Governor and also participate in the BRICS Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors Meeting. AAP protests outside Delhi Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa's office for ‘insulting' slum dwellers
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)'s Poorvanchali wing Monday staged a protest outside the office of Delhi Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa in Rajouri Garden, for allegedly calling those whose houses have been demolished as 'Rohingyas.' On Sunday, the AAP launched a massive protest against the demolitions taking place in Delhi. After the AAP's leaders and former ministers protested at Jantar Mantar Sunday, Sirsa told reporters, 'I want to tell Kejriwal ji that you can stand up for the Rohingya and Bangladeshi people as much as you want, but they will not be allowed to stay in the country under any circumstances. Arvind Kejriwal ji, if you have so much love and affection for them, then why don't you take them to your home and make them live with you?' A day later, the AAP leaders reached outside the minister's office in Rajouri Garden, demanding a public apology, saying his remarks were an insult to the migrant community from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. 'Manjinder Singh Sirsa has insulted the Purvanchali community living in Delhi's jhuggis by calling them 'Bangladeshi-Rohingyas,' AAP Delhi President Saurabh Bharadwaj said. Senior AAP leaders with roots in Bihar — MLA Sanjeev Jha and former MLA Rituraj Jha — were also present at the protest. 'The BJP is demolishing jhuggis across Delhi. These jhuggis are home to a large number of people from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. On Sunday, many jhuggi residents had gathered at Jantar Mantar to protest. Instead of addressing their concerns, BJP Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa labelled them as Bangladeshis and Rohingyas,' Jha said. 'These are the same jhuggi residents with whom Sirsa and BJP leaders used to stay overnight during elections. They ate food with them, folded hands, and said, 'You are my mai-baap, vote for me and I will get your jhuggis regularised',' he added. Jha said, 'There are 50 to 60 lakh Poorvanchalis living in Delhi's jhuggis and informal colonies. The BJP has insulted them all.' The Delhi BJP spokesperson is yet to comment on the issue.
