MP13 to prioritise agrofood sector for farmers and fishermen

KUALA LUMPUR: The 13th Malaysia Plan (MP13) will prioritise strategic interventions in the agrofood sector to ensure farmers, breeders, and fishermen benefit directly from policy implementation. Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu emphasised this during a meeting with Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan at Wisma Tani.
Mohamad stated that MP13, set for tabling on July 30, must align with the MADANI values of Prosperity, Compassion, and Empowerment. He stressed that policies should not remain theoretical but must translate into tangible improvements for those in the sector. 'MP13 cannot remain as a document on paper alone and it must be translated into the field. It must reach the people,' he said in a Facebook post.
The minister highlighted the need for competitiveness among farmers, higher productivity, and better protection for fishermen. 'This is the face of MADANI Agriculture that we dream of, a fair, equitable and sustainable development without anyone being left behind,' he added. Close collaboration between the Agriculture and Finance Ministries is expected to drive these reforms. - Bernama

Acting ministers ensure continuity ahead of Parliament session

KUANTAN: Appointing acting ministers to fill vacant cabinet posts is crucial to ensure continuity, especially with the upcoming parliamentary session set to begin on July 21, said Minister of Plantation and Commodities Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani. Johari, who has been tasked with temporarily overseeing the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability, said the move is also necessary to address pressing issues under the ministry's purview. 'When there's a vacancy, the Prime Minister appoints someone to take on the role temporarily. With Parliament about to sit, there will be questions that require answers. For example, the Ministry of Economy needs to finalise the 13th Malaysia Plan, so someone has to be appointed to get the job done quickly. 'That's why an acting role is important to resolve critical matters within the next month or two,' he told reporters after officiating the 2025 UMNO Kuantan Division Delegates' Meeting today. Yesterday, Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar announced that Johari has been appointed to carry out the duties and functions of the Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability with immediate effect. On May 28, Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad announced his resignation as Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability, effective July 4. Earlier, on June 27, Shamsul Azri announced that Second Finance Minister Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan had been appointed acting Minister of Economy, effective immediately, following the resignation of Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli on June 17. Both Rafizi and Nik Nazmi stepped down after failing to retain their respective positions as PKR deputy president and vice president in the party elections held in May. - Bernama

Interim ministerial appointments crucial ahead of parliament session

KUANTAN: The appointment of temporary ministers is crucial to handle key issues, especially ahead of the upcoming Parliament session, said Plantations and Commodities Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani. Johari, who is also Umno vice-president, said the interim appointments are essential to manage pressing matters in the coming months, particularly during the parliamentary session scheduled from July 21 to August 28. "(The) NRES(Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Ministry) post became vacant after Nik Nazmi(Nik Ahmad) stepped down, just as the Economy Ministry was left without a minister following Rafizi (Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli's) resignation. In such cases, the Prime Minister appoints temporary ministers especially with Parliament about to convene." Yesterday, Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar announced that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had informed the Cabinet during the July 9 meeting that Johari would assume the responsibilities of NRES Minister effective immediately. Meanwhile, on June 27, Shamsul Azri said that Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan would carry out the duties of the Economy Minister. "In Parliament, there are questions that need to be answered. The Economy Ministry, for example, must finalise matters related to the 13th Malaysia Plan and that is why temporary appointments are necessary to address urgent issues over the next one, two, or three months," he told reporters after opening the Kuantan Umno division delegates' meeting here today. Johari dismissed claims that his appointment signifies Umno gaining dominance in the Cabinet under Anwar, saying that the party only has 26 members of parliaments(MPs). "How can we dominate the Cabinet? Umno only has 26 is determined in Parliament, and the unity government collectively has about 148 MPs and that is where the strength lies," he said. Johari said that he did not attend the meeting between Anwar and several Barisan Nasional ministers and MPs held yesterday at the Seri Perdana Complex in Putrajaya.
