Test-Driving The 2025 BMW X5

Forbes23-05-2025
The tried-and-true X5 has aimed itself more into comfort and tech in recent years, but depending on trim choice, you'll still have fun blasting it around town. Their xDrive40i provided a plush, zippy, infatuation-inducing week's test. Let's have a look.

BMW gave the X5 a refresh last year (2024), and the 2025 model carries that over with minimal changes. The big update is the introduction of BMW's new iDrive 8.5 system, which replaces the previous software and aims to make the touchscreen more intuitive and less menu-heavy. A few trims and packages have been reshuffled, but the song remains the same.
The xDrive40i doesn't scream for attention, but it's still quite handsome. You get the familiar BMW kidney grille, slimmer LED headlights, finely sculpted body panels and a slightly squared-off rear. Standard wheels are 20-inch alloys, but BMW offers up to 22s. Nothing about the look is groundbreaking at this point, but it doesn't feel dated either.

Inside, it's clean and tech-heavy. The dashboard is dominated by a single curved display—one part 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, one part 14.9-inch touchscreen. There are very few physical buttons. Materials are upscale in the base version, with synthetic leather and brushed metal, and you can option in fancier wood trims and Merino leather. Cargo space is reasonable at 3.9 cubic feet behind the rear seats, and up to 72.3 with them folded.

Standard tech includes the aforementioned iDrive 8.5 system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, navigation and over-the-air updates. Voice control is standard and works well, and there's a customizable digital gauge cluster. Optional features include a head-up display, gesture controls, a 360-degree camera and a Harman Kardon or Bowers & Wilkins sound system.
The base price for the 2025 BMW X5 xDrive40i is $68,600. That gets you all-wheel drive, the turbo inline-six, panoramic sunroof, navigation, and synthetic leather. A fully loaded version with the luxury seating package, premium sound, adaptive air suspension, and the full suite of driver aids can push the price close to $85,000.
The xDrive40i uses a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six with a mild-hybrid system, making 375 horsepower and 398 lb-ft of torque. It's paired with an 8-speed automatic. 0–60 mph takes just over 5 seconds, according to press materials. EPA mileage is 23 mpg city, 27 highway, 25 combined. That's better than most rivals with similar power and standard AWD.
It's smooth and quick - that's the very first thing you feel. Away we go! The turbo inline-six punches well off the line and the mild-hybrid system smooths out the otherwise distracting stop-start mechanism. Steering is light but suitably accurate, and visibility is good for this type of ride. Seats are firm but never harsh, especially with the optional air suspension. It's not a sports car, but it doesn't feel like a couch either. You always know it's a BMW. It was a lot of fun to get in and out of over the week's test - the X5 almost felt like a dog. 'Let's go! Let's go!' Or maybe I was the dog.
One thing I loved was the ability to lower the rear gate vertically at the push of a button once you have it open, assisting with anything you're trying to jam in there and you need all the room you can get.

BMW
The 2025 X5 xDrive40i earned an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ - their highest rating. It arrives with nearly all major safety features as standard but BMW offers additional driver-assist upgrades for those who want more automation. Driver aid safety features are generous - forward collision warning, blind-spot monitoring, lane-departure warning, adaptive cruise control, and (optionally) BMW's Highway Assistant, which allows hands-free driving at certain speeds.
Conclusion: It blasts off and handles well but isn't as sharp as a Cayenne or as cushy as a Genesis GV80. Where it shines is in its modern tech, its sleek curved display and its BMW luxe flavor.

Motor finance victims urged to complain as compensation could hit £18bn

Millions of drivers could be owed a share of up to £18bn after the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) announced it will consult on an industry-wide compensation scheme. Motorists could receive a pay-out after it emerged many motor finance firms were not complying with rules or the law by not providing customers with relevant information about commission paid by lenders to the car dealers who sold the loans, the FCA said. The authority estimates that most individuals will probably receive less than £950 in compensation. The final total cost of any compensation scheme is estimated to be between £9 billion and £18 billion, the FCA added. Consumer champion Martin Lewis said in a video posted to X that millions of people are likely to be due a share of up to £18 billion. He told Sky News the consultation is 'likely to mean 40% of people who got a car finance deal between 2007 and 2021 will be due some form of redress, likely to be hundreds not thousands of pounds'. The consultation will be launched by early October. If the compensation scheme goes ahead, the first payments should be made in 2026. It comes after Friday's ruling by the Supreme Court on cases in which the FCA had intervened. While some motor finance customers will not get compensation because in many cases commission payments were legal, the court ruled that in certain circumstances the failure to properly disclose commission arrangements could be unfair and therefore unlawful, the FCA added. People who have already complained do not need to do anything, the FCA said. Consumers who are concerned that they were not told about commission and think they may have paid too much to their motor finance lender have been urged to complain now. Consumers do not need to use a claims management company or law firm and doing so could cost them around 30% of any compensation paid, it added. To make an initial complaint, the FCA says people should get in touch with their lender or broker, then the provider should send an acknowledgement within eight weeks. Under the FCA's current rules, it will not have to send a final response until after December 4 2025. But as the FCA is consulting on a compensation scheme, the deadline may be extended. If customers are unhappy with their provider's response, they can then complain to the Financial Ombudsman Service, the FCA added. The authority will propose rules on how lenders should 'consistently, efficiently and fairly' decide whether someone is owed compensation and how much. It will monitor if firms are following the rules and act if they are not. Nikhil Rathi, chief executive of the FCA, said: 'It is clear that some firms have broken the law and our rules. It's fair for their customers to be compensated. 'We also want to ensure that the market, relied on by millions each year, can continue to work well and consumers can get a fair deal. 'Our aim is a compensation scheme that's fair and easy to participate in, so there's no need to use a claims management company or law firm. If you do, it will cost you a significant chunk of any money you get. 'It will take time to establish a scheme but we hope to start getting people any money they are owed next year.'

F1 fans make same complaint about McLaren as Piastri averts disaster with Norris

Oscar Piastri admits he was always facing an uphill battle to overtake Lando Norris after his McLaren teammate's one-stop strategy paved the way to victory at the Hungarian GP and left many of Piastri's fans complaining about favouritism. Norris clung on with worn tyres as Piastri loomed behind him in the final laps, with the Briton's race victory cutting the Aussie's championship lead to to nine points heading into the mid-season break. The McLaren teammates avoided a near-disaster on the second-last lap when Piastri tried to pass Norris and nearly collided with his teammate when he locked up a wheel. Fortunately, the incident didn't prove costly but the Aussie's move earnt a rebuke from his team. "Remember how we go racing, Oscar," came the warning from his race engineer, Tom Stallard. Piastri tried everything to overtake Norris in a tense finish but it was his teammate that clung to victory in another one-two finish for McLaren, with Mercedes driver George Russell finishing third. Pole-sitter Charles Leclerc could only manage fourth, while four-time reigning world champion Max Verstappen finished way back in ninth. The Aussie driver admitted that overtaking Norris was always going to be "much easier said than done", despite closing in to within touching distance of the race leader in the closing stages. It was a victory shaped as much by smart strategy as gritty driving. Norris briefly dropped to fifth on the first lap but made his tyres last to stop only once, while Piastri changed twice. Fans question McLaren as Oscar Piastri has to settle for 2nd "I pushed as hard as I could. I think after I saw Lando going for a one [stop], I knew I was going to have overtake on track, which is much easier said than done around here," Piastri said after the race. "I tried a few things, it was a gamble either way, and today unfortunately we were just on the wrong side of it. "The team did a great job, the car really came alive in the second half of the race, and the car's been great all weekend – thank you to the team. I'm looking forward to a couple of weeks off." While Piastri accepted his teammate's win with class, the victory for Norris left many fans questioning the contrasting pit strategies that appeared to favour the British driver. So McLaren wants Lando Norris to win. I get it - he is the senior driver, been around in the team for years. But Zak Brown should stop pretending he has two No. 1 drivers in the team. At this point they will do anything to favour Norris on strategy over Piastri. #HungariangGP #F1 — Payel Roy Maitra (@PayelRoy) August 3, 2025 Every driver gets hard done by the strategy from time to time, but it can't be a coincidence anymore the amount of times Oscar Piastri gets screwed by the strategy to the benefit of Lando Norris. May as well rebrand the team to McLando. #HungariangGP #F1 #Mclaren — lachie (@lachxii) August 3, 2025 Nothing much to say after this GP other than….Ferrari not listening to Leclerc. McLaren favouring Lando over Oscar at the same GP as last year (tainted first win). & Max Verstappen being out on a strategy which I'll never understand.#F1 #HungariangGP #MV1 #MV33 #Formula1 — OK3ZZY (@OK3ZZY) August 3, 2025 This is on the team and suck their Papaya Rules. Poor Oscar. It could've been a one stop. 👎🏻 #HungarianGP — ash ✎ (@endpaige) August 3, 2025 Oscar was never passed on track but loses the #HungariangGP … What a hollow victory for @LandoNorris Bad luck @OscarPiastri That's a bullshit thing @McLarenF1 did to you. @F1 — The Huski (@Huski67) August 3, 2025 Oscar is battling Norris and the team. If he wins this championship, it will be embarrassing for Norris #HungarianGP — Amu⚠️ (@amogelang_me) August 3, 2025 Lando Norris claims victory after one-stop strategy Piastri found himself trailing Norris after being stuck behind pole-sitter Leclerc in the opening stages, before making an early pitstop. The move proved decisive as McLaren opted for the one-stop strategy with Norris that ultimately proved the difference. When race engineer Will Joseph asked Norris on the radio, 'Lando, 40 laps on the hard tyre, you up for it?', the Briton replied: 'Yeah, why not?'. RELATED: Oscar Piastri responds amid uproar over Aussie's act on podium F1 driver in danger of being axed after incident with Oscar Piastri The Aussie steadily cut into Norris' lead in the latter stages of the race but the British driver held on with old tyres to take the win. "I'm dead. It was tough, it was tough," Norris said. "The final stint, with Oscar catching, I was pushing flat out. "Good racing. Good strategy. Good call," was how Norris summed it up on the team radio afterwards. For the dominant McLaren drivers, it was their seventh 1-2 finish of the season and the team's 11th victory in 14 races in 2025, extending their lead over Ferrari to 299 points in the constructors' championship. Russell took third for Mercedes after fighting his way past Leclerc in a contest that earned the Ferrari driver a time penalty for nearly colliding with Russell. Leclerc was 'frustrated' after failing to make more of his stunning drive in qualifying to take pole. A day after calling himself "useless" and questioning whether Ferrari might need to replace him, Lewis Hamilton ended up where he started - in 12th. While Fernando Alonso took Aston Martin's best result of the season with fifth on a slow track that suited his car. Gabriel Bortoleto was a surprise sixth for Sauber and Lance Stroll seventh in the other Aston Martin. with AAP
