BMW's EV Domination: Outsells Audi & Mercedes
We should also point out that this is the BMW brand, not the BMW Group, so Rolls-Royce and MINI are not included in these numbers. Even if they were, neither of those nameplates would contribute much to overall EV sales in 2024, as MINI is just beginning its electrified journey, and Rolls-Royce is a hyper-premium brand with a focused purchaser in mind.
Audi sold over 164,000 EVs in 2024, while Mercedes-Benz sold 185,059, meaning both automakers combined sold between 349,060 and 350,058. Audi only notes that it sold 'over' 164,000, so actual sales could be between 164,001 and 164,099. This means BMW sold at least 18,417 more EVs than Audi and Mercedes-Benz combined last year. Overall EV sales were up 13.5 percent for BMW in 2024, while Mercedes-Benz and Audi EV sales declined 23 percent and eight percent, respectively.
BMW's two other brands, MINI and Rolls-Royce, also saw impressive upticks in EV sales. MINI sold 56,171 EVs in 2024, up 24.3 percent year over year. Rolls-Royce sold an impressive 1,890 Spectre EVs, its only electrified offering, which saw 326 sales in 2023. BMW's overall sales were down year over year, though. It sold just shy of 2.5 million cars in 2024, a four percent decrease from 2023. Its overall EV sales were 17.4 percent of its total sales, which aligns BMW Group with the trend in EV sales where nearly one in five new cars sold is an EV.
The i4, BMW's electrified sedan, comprised nearly half of all 4-Series sales in North America for 2024. This figure matters because BMW wants its overall EV sales share to be at 50 percent by 2030, and the 4-Series is a cornerstone for BMW. This suggests buyers will respond positively as BMW continues to electrify its lineup.
There are a few things to keep in mind regarding BMW's EV sales. First, the company is embarking on what Oliver Zipse, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG, calls 'the biggest future-focused project in the history of our company,' namely its NEUE KLASSE lineup. NEUE KLASSE is a rethinking of BMW's sedan and SUV platforms as it charges into electrification. It has wholly new battery technology and a fresh platform that reimagines what the 'ultimate driving machine' looks like when fully electrified. Second, BMW has yet to introduce the world to its iX3, the electrified version of its insanely popular X3 SUV.
A lot hinges on NEUE KLASSE, and it seems BMW took its time and put in the work to get the platform right. From what we've seen, the next iteration of BMW should continue to put distance between it and other premium EV automakers. We'll know later this year when BMW's first NEUE KLASSE vehicle launches, but until then, the German automaker can revel in its increased sales when compared to its hometown competitors.

Mercedes-Benz opens world's first Maybach brand center in South Korea
The Maybach brand center has opened in southern Seoul. Photo courtesy of HS Hyosung The Class SEOUL, July 15 (UPI) -- Mercedes-Benz Korea has opened the world's first brand center for Maybach, the ultra-luxury line of the German automaker, in southern Seoul to capture more market share here. Mercedes-Benz Korea said that access to the five-story building would be limited to customers with reservations, and they would be able to enjoy personalized services from product experts and sales consultants. Mercedes-Maybach vehicles typically start about $200,000 and can increase to beyond $300,000, depending on the model and features. On top of the showroom, the Maybach Brand Center will house a studio in which visitors can select details, including the vehicle's exterior and interior, as well as decorative features. Mercedes-Benz's local partner, HS Hyosung The Class, will run the facility, which opened Monday. "From the moment a guest arrives until they depart, a dedicated sales representative and personal service escort are assigned to deliver a meticulously tailored, one-on-one experience," HS Hyosung The Class CEO Roh Jae-bong said in a statement. For Mercedes-Benz, South Korea is one of its top five markets worldwide. During the first six months of this year, the carmaker sold 32,562 units in Korea, up 8.5% from a year before, according to local business tracker Carisyou. The country is also a major market for Maybach. Mercedes-Benz Korea noted that more than 10,000 Korean customers have purchased Maybach models over the past two decades since the brand's debut here in 2004. Last year, Korea was Maybach's third-largest market with sales of 1,363 units, following the United States and China. In 2023, the figure was a record-high of 2,596. "The opening of the new brand center is a clear indication of Maybach's commitment to the Korean market," Daelim University automotive professor Kim Pil-soo told UPI in a phone interview. "Korea is also a significant place for other premium brands, including Lamborghini and Porsche. That's why top executives of premium carmakers visit the country so frequently," he added.

Things you need to know before renting an electric vehicle ― that the agent won't tell you
My oldest friend, Cindy, was in town recently for her father's birthday. Over dinner, she mentioned she'd rented a Mercedes EQS electric vehicle at the airport. Cindy liked the car's looks and comfort, but she had questions. Questions somebody should have answered before she left the parking lot. 'Where do I charge it?' she said. 'How does it work? This car is frustrating.' That's the sound of a rental company dropping the ball, and an automaker paying the price. A little help, please "U.S. rental-car companies had a unique opportunity to start transitioning their fleets to EVs, while also educating hundreds of thousands of Americans about the new cars. "They almost uniformly blew it," said John Voelcker, a reporter and analyst who has covered electric vehicles for 15 years. EVs are great in a lot of ways. They can also be maddening, frequently because car companies got too cute and reinvented features that already worked fine while they were also creating the technology that will probably eventually dominate the roads. Some EVs have a start/stop button. Others power up and down automatically when the key fob enters and leaves the vehicle. Locking and unlocking them can be equally idiosyncratic. The king of electric vehicles: GM reported triple-digit growth in its EVs while Tesla faced a double-digit loss Rental companies should be prepared to demonstrate these features, and others. I've spent enough time in Mercedes vehicles and other EVs to answer Cindy's questions. She made it through the rest of her trip to Michigan without getting stranded, but how many times has that happened to drivers whose only mistake was trusting the rental car company to tell them how to operate the vehicle? It's not that hard to get it right. Here's what you should demand from a rental agency, and a few key tips for anybody curious about EVs: List of things to ask upfront Before you rent: What else you need to know to be safe on the road Charger types: There are basically two: Level 2 charging, best for topping up the battery overnight; and DC fast charging for long drives where you'll stop and charge en route. Both will probably cost less than using gasoline. Level 2 charging, which uses the same 240-volt current as many appliances, should cost a lot less. When DC fast charging, it's most efficient to stop at 80% or 90% of a full charge. Adding the last 10%-20% ― it varies depending on brand and battery technology ― takes longer. One-pedal driving/regenerative braking: Many EVs have this feature, which maximizes the amount of energy recaptured for the battery when the vehicle slows down. You may never touch the brake pedal at all. The features increase battery range and are clever engineering, but not everybody likes them. Drivers who don't can turn it off or select different levels of deceleration Battery preconditioning: When the vehicle is plugged in, an app can tell it to warm the battery to its most efficient temperature before you start driving. That saves valuable battery power and increases range. Some vehicles will also precondition the battery for quicker charging before you stop at a DC fast charger on long drives. That reduces charging time and gets you get back on the road faster. Heated seats and steering wheels are your friend: It's a more efficient use of electricity to keep occupants comfortable by touching the seats and steering wheel than heating all the air in the cabin. Preconditioning can increase driving range significantly when temperatures fall below freezing. Air conditioning doesn't use as much power as heating. Traditional forced-air AC is fine in hot weather. Two good apps you'll need to find chargers: Plugshare and ABRP (A Better Route Planner) are my favorites. They'll tell you where to find chargers, which ones are open and if any are out of service. Charging networks like EVgo have their own apps but they only direct you to their chargers. Plugshare and ABRP are universal search engines, the Chrome and Safari of EV charging. Choose to charge overnight: Your life will be simpler if you stay somewhere with a Level 2 charger. One of the best things about EVs is starting every day with a full battery. Another is never stopping to gas up in the rain, wind or snow. And remember this courtesy move Never leave your vehicle parked at the charger when the battery is full. You don't lock the bathroom door behind you as you leave, do you? Somebody needs to use it. Are you changing your mind about renting an EV? This may seem like a lot to think about and do, but it quickly becomes second nature. DC fast chargers are also becoming more common, but "charging deserts" still exist. If you plan long drives in your rental, download ABRP or Plugshare before you decide an EV's the right choice for this trip. The rental clerk turned Cindy out into the night with a key fob and a wave, probably because nobody at HQ realized what a disservice that was to a customer. Cindy's a patient and forgiving soul, necessary character traits for someone who has put up with me for decades, you might say. Rental companies shouldn't take advantage of her, or any other customer's good nature. They need to improve their service or stop offering EVs. Until that happens, customers should ask a few extra questions before renting one. Contact Mark Phelan: mmphelan@ Follow him on Twitter @mark_phelan. Tesla's $70K Gamble in India: Can Musk Crack the World's Toughest EV Market?
Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) just opened its first showroom in India, aiming to reboot growth as sales soften in its core U.S. and China markets. The 4,000-square-foot location in Mumbai's Bandra Kurla Complex debuted with two Model Ys on displaypriced at $69,757 and $79,000 depending on range. That's significantly higher than U.S. pricing, a result of India's punishing 70110% import tariffs. While the Mumbai showroom drew steady crowds on opening day, Tesla's strategy here isn't about volumeyet. Instead, this looks like a long game: testing demand, building brand equity, and setting the stage for deeper market penetration. Tesla isn't setting up local production for now, which means those steep prices aren't coming down anytime soon. But the company is moving fast to lay the groundwork. Bookings are already open, deliveries are expected to begin as early as August, and Tesla plans to open a second store in New Delhi by month's end. It's also installing 16 Superchargers across Mumbai and Delhi and hiring locally to support after-sales service. According to Tesla's Southeast Asia director Isabel Fan, the company expects to start handing over cars this quartersuggesting a near-term pipeline is already in motion. The bigger picture? India could be Tesla's next battleground, especially with BYD (BYDDF) gaining ground globally and German automakers like BMW and Mercedes-Benz already vying for Indian luxury EV buyers. With luxury cars accounting for just 1% of India's auto market, the upside won't be immediatebut it's there. Analysts say the brand-first approach makes sense, especially if trade negotiations between the U.S. and India lead to lower tariffs down the line. Tesla shares ticked up 0.4% to $318.27 on the news, though the stock remains down roughly 21% year-to-date. For investors, India may not move the needle right awaybut it could reshape the map.
