1st phase of integrated immigration system to be ready by year-end
Immigration Department director-general Datuk Zakaria Shaaban said it includes an Advanced Passenger Screening System (APSS), which is capable of assessing passenger profiles from their country of origin, including criminal history and visa status before they arrive in Malaysia.
He said three command centres, capable of monitoring all immigration-related activities in real time using AI, would also be established in Putrajaya, Kota Kinabalu and Kuching.
"As the system will integrate with other agencies, we will be able to monitor movements into the country more effectively, including at entry points and depots, as well as during enforcement actions on the ground.
"For example, if our officers are unable to determine a person's whereabouts, the command centre will assist them," he said during a visit to Media Prima Bhd today.
On a separate matter, he said the Refugee Registration Document (DPP) initiative was currently at the system procurement stage.
He said the department has the data on all refugees at its depots, which could be included in the registry once the system is ready.
Earlier, during an interview for the MHI, he said NIISe, which is based on AI and smart data integration, would enhance entry points with an autogate system that processes each traveller in just "three to four seconds".
In addition, the use of body cameras and AI-powered smart CCTVs enables real-time behavioural analysis, including detecting unusual interactions between travellers and officers, or potential abuse of power, he said.
He also said the department is employing chatbots and interactive automation to handle visa applications and travel document services.
"Digital systems such as MyVisa, eVisa, ePass, MyOnline Passport, MYXpats and others now incorporate automation elements that pave the way for AI integration."

Paragon Globe eyes strong growth from industrial, residential segments
PETALING JAYA: Johor-based property developer Paragon Globe Bhd is positioning itself for sustained growth in the industrial and residential sectors, supported by strategic projects and the state's buoyant economic prospects, following a record-breaking financial performance in its recently concluded financial year. He acknowledged delays and public unease over certain appointments but assured that all processes have been carried out fairly and transparently. "This morning, I had a lengthy discussion with the Conference of Rulers. "I think let them decide and tomorrow, hopefully, there will be an announcement that would clearly dispel the so-called negative perceptions,' he said in his speech at Malaysia's International Conference on Integrity and Governance here today. Anwar, who is also Finance Minister, stressed that the Madani government fully upholds judicial independence and has not interfered in any court proceedings or decisions during his tenure. "…so I rest my case, and I hope when the announcement is made, things will prove that this government is committed to reform, including the principle of judicial independence,' he added. Anwar stressed that he has never submitted any 'compromise' candidates for top judicial positions to His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, or to the Conference of Rulers. Government mulls amending JAC Act to prevent confusion over judges' appointments
PUTRAJAYA: The government will look into amending the Judicial Appointments Commission (JAC) Act 2009 to prevent confusion in the process of appointing judges in the country. Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said said that since the Act came into force in 2009, there had never been any confusion surrounding the procedure for judicial appointments. "It must be remembered that the JAC Act was passed and gazetted in 2009 and has been applied in the appointments of five Chief Justices without issue. "Unfortunately, it has now become a matter of contention. As such, we need to conduct a thorough review. "We need to improve the Act because there is currently a lot of confusion and a lack of clarity from the public's perspective," she said when met at the closing ceremony of the International Governance and Integrity Conference 2025 here today. Present were Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar. Azalina added that the amendments were necessary to identify the root cause of the confusion in the judicial appointment process. "Where does this confusion or lack of clarity stem from? Is it from the process itself or the terminology used, for example, the name Judicial Appointments Commission itself? "Perhaps the word 'appointments' creates certain perceptions; I am not sure. As such, we need to conduct a study," she said. She said her ministry would gather views from experts to ensure a comprehensive discussion could be carried out. "There will be a comprehensive discussion. I have also invited the Bar Council to be involved from the early stages, to provide balanced perspectives and views. "After that, I will bring the matter to the cabinet meeting to decide on the direction we should take," she said.
