Posed As IAS, Booked Govt Guest House: Bihar Man Arrested In Mumbai For Forgery

News182 days ago
When confronted, the Bihar resident confidently flashed a fake ID card identifying himself as an MHA official, valid till 2028.
A 32-year-old man from Bihar has been arrested in Mumbai for allegedly impersonating an IAS officer and posing as an official from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). The accused, Chandramohan Prasad Rambali Singh, had been staying at the Customs Department's government guest house in Bandra East by using fake ID cards. Police said he had previously attempted the UPSC exams but never cleared them. He was caught after officers received a tip-off about someone using forged documents to pass off as a government officer.
According to police officials, Singh had been staying for two days at the Customs Department's plush government guest house in Bandra East, posing as an Assistant Director (Security) in the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). His web of lies started unraveling when patrolling officers noticed his white Swift Dzire car fitted with a 'Government of India" sticker outside the Silver Oak Hotel in Malad's industrial estate. Based on a tip-off, constable Laxman Bagave and inspector Balasaheb Raut from the Dahisar Unit 12 intercepted the car around 1 pm on June 28.
When confronted, Singh confidently flashed a fake ID card identifying himself as an MHA official, valid till 2028. However, officers quickly noticed discrepancies in the card and detained him for further questioning. Subsequent searches revealed multiple fake ID cards.
Singh later confessed that he had never cleared the UPSC exams, though he had attempted them in the past. He admitted that he came to Mumbai for a three-day getaway and used the help of an acquaintance, who is an actual government employee, to book the guest house. He even hired a local driver, Fardin Saifi (24), instructing him to act as the chauffeur for a visiting bureaucrat. Saifi later told police that Singh had even managed to bypass traffic checks in Dadar a day earlier by showing his fake IAS ID.

CCB unearths racket creating mule accounts for cybercrimes

While probing a cybercrime, the Central Crime Branch (CCB) busted a gang of four for creating mule accounts to help cyber crooks divert the swindled money into these accounts. According to city Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh, the accused allegedly misused Ministry of Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises' Udyam Portal to open bank accounts in the name of daily wage workers, which were then misused for cybercrimes. With the arrests, the CCB officials have frozen over 357 bank accounts that were being supplied to cybercriminals to be used as mules to allegedly launder the proceeds of cybercrimes. The probe also revealed the suspected involvement of some bank officials in the scam, which is being probed. The accused have been identified as Lakshmeesh N, 33, a loan recovery agent; Prakash H, 43, a private firm employee; Sunil Kumar, 45, an unemployed youth; and Puttaswamy, 54, a car driver. The accused hail from in and around Bengaluru and probe is on to ascertain their links with the cyber crime network. Initial investigations revealed that the accused lured gullible people and used their credentials to open bank accounts . The accused would take the bank details, including the debit cards, and operate them themselves. The accused would also share a small amount of profit with the account holders on a monthly basis in return of the favour, Mr. Singh said. 'For every ₹1 lakh transaction, the account holders received ₹4,000 as commission. We are probing if the bank account holders were also involved. Some of the mule accounts seized are also tied to shell companies,' said Mr. Singh. The CCB also found that there were transactions amounting to crores of rupees from the said bank accounts, and over 100 cases were detected across the country registered with the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal (NCRP) where these accounts were flagged. Police also suspect the involvement of several others in the racket and efforts are on to track them down to ascertain their involvement. The officials also recovered a laptop, four mobile phones and several bank accounts and cheque books and being analysed for further investigation.

Dalit farmer alleges land grab by SP MLA, matter in Kairana court

Lucknow: A land dispute in Shamli flared into a political storm after Roop Singh, a 52-year-old Dalit farmer from Khanpur village, accused the family of SP MLA Umar Ali Khan of grabbing his govt-allotted land through fraud and coercion. Singh also threatened self-immolation along with his family, prompting concern across political and administrative circles. The controversy stems from a 2003 govt land allotment of three bighas to Singh under a Dalit welfare scheme. The plot, located along the Delhi–Saharanpur highway in Jalalabad, was registered in Khata No. 1213. On June 1, 2018, Singh reportedly sold the land via registered deed to Maulana Ali Khan and Umar Ali Khan, sons of Sarfaraz Ali Khan. Umar is currently the SP MLA from Behat, Saharanpur. However, Singh now claims the sale deed was executed under duress, alleging forged signatures and lack of consent. He filed a civil suit in February 2025 in the Kairana civil court, contesting the legality of the transaction. The next hearing is on July 7, 2025. At a press conference on June 27, Singh alleged the land—now worth Rs 4-5 crore—was forcibly taken over, and he is facing threats and pressure to abandon the case. His dramatic threat to self-immolate drew public attention, especially from Dalit rights groups who view the matter as an example of political and social exploitation. In response, MLA Umar Ali Khan told TOI that a legal registry and full payment via cheque were made in 2018. "The farmer is being instigated by the land mafia. He accepted the money then and is now challenging the deal after seven years," Khan said. He claimed the land was undeveloped in 2018 but has gained value now due to improved connectivity. Shamli SP Ram Sewak Gautam confirmed that the matter is under review and a probe is underway. Get the latest lifestyle updates on Times of India, along with Doctor's Day 2025 , messages and quotes!

Bogus teachers scam: Min now announces statewide SIT probe

Mumbai: State education minister Dada Bhuse on Tuesday announced a statewide SIT probe into the Shalarth education scam. Through this scam, fake payroll IDs were used to disburse salaries to 580 bogus teaching and non-teaching staff, causing losses worth crores of rupees to the state exchequer. The scam, mainly centred around schools in Nagpur, operated since 2019, and was finally detected in April 2025. An SIT, largely limited to Nagpur, is already in operation. However, on Tuesday, Bhuse announced a statewide SIT and said the scam was operating beyond Nagpur district. "The SIT will have an IAS and IPS officer and also a law official. It will be time-bound and submit its report in 3-4 months," said Bhuse. He also said, "We have already taken action against 19 people, which includes education officials and heads of educational institutions. No one will be spared. There were complaints received as far back as 2000, but no probe was ordered. The matter came to light only in 2025, and we immediately began a probe."
