Assam Rifles seize drugs worth Rs 113.36 crore in Mizoram

and other agencies, in different operations have seized highly addictive methamphetamine tablets and heroin valued at over Rs 113.36 crore and recovered 7,000 detonators in Mizoram.
The security personnel arrested three persons in connection with the significant seizure during the past 24 hours.
A defence spokesman said that acting on specific intelligence, regarding the movement of drugs in Zokhawthar areas, an Area Domination Patrol (ADP) team of Assam Rifles observed two individuals carrying white rucksacks. Seeing the security forces, the drug peddlers jumped into the river and escaped across the India-Myanmar border.
On inspection of rucksacks, the para-military troops recovered 33 packets containing 3,33,300 banned methamphetamine tablets weighing 37.476 Kgs. The approximate value of the methamphetamine tablets, also known as Yaba or party tablets, is Rs 112.401 crore, which was likely intended for distribution in Champhai town.
Zokhawthar is a border town in eastern Mizoram's Champhai district, which shares an unfenced border with Myanmar.

Assam Rifles found suspicious movement of two individuals on a Chinese Kenbo bike and intercepted them. During the search of the two individuals, 11 soap cases (128 gm) containing heroin worth Rs 96 lakh were found and seized.
In the third operation, Assam Rifles and Mizoram Police, while conducting a search operation in Chanmari areas of Aizawl district, recovered 7,000 detonators from an individual, who kept the explosive materials in his house. The recovered drugs and detonators, along with the three arrested drug peddlers, have been handed over to police.

31-year-old dies while cleaning manhole in Bengaluru; four held
BENGALURU: A 31-year-old labourer, who developed breathing issues while cleaning a manhole at Akshaya Nagar in RMC Yard police limits on Sunday, died at home on Monday morning. The deceased is Puttaswamy of RMC Yard. Four people have been arrested on charges of engaging Puttaswamy for manual scavenging despite a ban on it. According to police, one of the accused, Nagaraju, hired Puttaswamy and Antony, a daily wager, to clean the clogged manhole. The duo entered the manhole around 7 pm without any safety gear. They developed breathing issues after inhaling toxic gases inside the manhole. Though Puttaswamy and Antony came out of the manhole, they were not given any medical help. On Monday morning, he was found dead. His body has been sent for postmortem, the police said. Based on a complaint by Puttaswamy's father, a case has been registered against Nagaraju, Antony, Ananthkumar and Devaraju for persuading Puttaswamy to enter the manhole. Antony has been booked for taking Puttaswamy to clean the manhole. The four have been booked under The Prohibition of Employment as Manual Scavengers and their Rehabilitation Act and Section 106 (causing death by negligence) of BNS. According to Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment report 2024, the state-wise number of identified manual scavengers in Karnataka are 2,927. In February 2023, two manual scavengers died while cleaning an STP near Kanakapura, on the city outskirts. Bengaluru has the highest manual scavenging deaths in the state. What does law say? As per Prohibition of Employment as Manual Scavengers and their Rehabilitation Act, no person or agency can engage or employ any person for manual scavenging and any person or agency who engages in manual scavenging is punishable with imprisonment up to 2 years or a fine up to Rs one lakh or both.

CBI arrests Rs 12.6 crore fraud accused after 16 years
BENGALURU: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on July 19 arrested a proclaimed offender, Nasreen Taj, from Bengaluru after a 16-year-long chase in a high-value bank fraud case of around Rs 12.63 crore in Mandya, the officials said on Monday. During this operation, human and technology intelligence (humint and techint) have been used. Taj had severed contact with her family and social network, and was living under the pseudonym- Salma and used to change residence. The CBI had registered the case on April 15, 2009, against accused, including, the then branch manager of Syndicate Bank, Mandya, husband of Taj- Asadullah Khan- and eight others for criminal conspiracy, cheating, forgery and using forged documents, to defraud the Syndicate Bank to the tune of Rs 12.63 crore. In collusion with her husband, Khan, and others, she fraudulently availed a Temporary Overdraft (TOD) facility of up to Rs 120 lakh, along with farm loans amounting to Rs 55 lakh from Syndicate Bank. 'The proceeds from these farm loans were illicitly diverted towards the repayment of the TOD, instead of utilising it for agricultural development, as mandated under the terms of sanction,' the agency said. CBI had filed the charge sheet on October 12, 2010. 'She failed to join the trial to summons/warrants and was untraceable since 2019. Multiple non-bailable warrants were issued against her since April 30, 2019. Finally, the Special Court, Bengaluru, on November 27, 2021, ordered Proclamation and Attachment of property warrant against her,' CBI added. She had misled the local residents as well as the employer about her real identity and had maintained minimal interaction with locals. The CBI used advanced technological tools and identity-tracking databases and meticulously analysed her digital footprint. 'Supplemented by extensive field investigations, the team successfully located Taj in Bengaluru. Pursuant to her identification, she was produced before the Competent Court in Bengaluru, which remanded her to judicial custody,' the agency is the second case in a row in which CBI used tech platforms to apprehend a long-absconding offender.

Midhun Reddy's arrest based on concrete evidence: HM
Gudibanda (Sri Sathya Sai district): Home and Disaster Management Minister Vangalapudi Anitha said on Monday that MP Mithun Reddy was arrested in connection with the liquor scam based on concrete evidence. Addressing the media during her visit to Madakasira, she emphasised that the court remanded the MP after thorough verification, confirming that arrests are made only when credible evidence exists. She further clarified that if a person is innocent, the judiciary would take the appropriate decision. Referring to the forest lands case and file-burning incidents involving Peddireddy Ramachandra Reddy's family, she said investigations were ongoing. Anitha also remarked that the State was pushed back by 20 years due to the previous government's failures. Highlighting developmental initiatives, the Minister revealed that three cybercrime police stations were currently functioning in the State. She pointed out that Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu has ordered the establishment of one cybercrime PS in every district. The government targets installing one lakh CCTV cameras across Andhra Pradesh, including every village and constituency. She also shared that since the NDA government took charge, Madakasira, one of the most backward regions, has received investments exceeding Rs 5,000 crore. Over 1,200 to 1,500 women are employed in the Indian Designs and Exports garment factory, and an Anganwadi-style school has been established for their children. She affirmed that women empowerment and regional development are being realised only under the NDA alliance. 'Despite pressing all kinds of buttons, the people responded with just one limiting them to 11 seats,' she said, mocking the party's electoral performance. The Home Minister claimed that marijuana cultivation and addiction had ruined a generation under the previous regime. The current government is taking strict action to eradicate marijuana by seizing properties of those involved in its cultivation, sale or transport. She praised the efforts of Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu, Minister Nara Lokesh (Education) and Minister Pawan Kalyan (Panchayat Raj) for their focus on employment, women's safety and youth welfare. Anitha also reported that 250 borewells were drilled in Madakasira to resolve water issues. Under TDP rule, Handri-Neeva irrigation projects and Kia Motors brought jobs to the region. The Anna Canteen in Madakasira has beens serving meals to over 1,200 people daily. She concluded by saying that such public welfare programmes were destroyed during the YSRCP regime, and true governance has now been restored under the NDA.
