French competition authority to investigate Meta's online advertising practices

CNA13 hours ago
PARIS :The French competition authority said on Wednesday it had informed Meta Platforms that the Facebook owner was accused of abusing its dominant position in the online advertising sector.
"(...) An objection has been notified to (...) Meta," the authority said in a statement, adding this procedure, likely to last several months, adding that investigations were ongoing and that the company has not been found guilty.
A spokesperson for the competition authority told Reuters that the procedure has been triggered by a complaint filed in October 2022 of Adloox, an advertising platform, which has since been bought by private U.S. company Scope3.
In April, French media companies, including TF1, France TV and BFM TV, said they were suing Meta over what they say are unlawful business practices.
The company will also face trial this October in Spain over a 551 million euro ($645.06 million) complaint lodged by more than 80 media companies accusing it of unfair competition in advertising.
In February online, rights campaigners filed complaints in Europe over Meta's advertising practices, while earlier on Wednesday, EU antitrust regulators fined Meta, as well as Apple for what they said were breaches of EU law.

WPP taps Microsoft exec Rose to rebuild ad group

LONDON :Britain's WPP named board member Cindy Rose as its new chief executive on Thursday, tasking the senior Microsoft executive with leading its recovery a day after a major profit warning showed the scale of the challenge at the ad group. Rose has been on the board since 2019 and will take over from outgoing CEO Mark Read on Sept. 1, the company said, with Read departing four months earlier than expected. Shares in the group, which fell to a 16-year low on Wednesday after it slashed its profit outlook, rose 2 per cent in early deals. Rose has spent the last nine years in senior leadership positions at Microsoft, where she rose to Chief Operating Officer, Global Enterprise after formerly being head of its UK business. Prior to that she worked at Vodafone and Virgin Media. WPP Chairman Philip Jansen said she had supported the digital transformation of large enterprises around the world - including embracing artificial intelligence to create new business models and revenue streams. "Her expertise in this landscape will be hugely valuable to WPP as the industry navigates fundamental changes and macroeconomic uncertainty," he said. Rose will take on a business reeling from the loss of some big accounts, a downturn in client spend, and fewer new business opportunities, which prompted the profit outlook cut that sent WPP shares down as much as 19 per cent on Wednesday. WPP, which lost its crown as the world's biggest ad group to France's Publicis last year, is also grappling with the transformational impact of AI, which gives clients the tools to create and manage more of their own marketing campaigns.

Meta poached Apple's top AI engineer Pang Ruoming with pay package over $256 million

Meta's new 'superintelligence' team, which has some of the highest compensation of any corporate job. San Francisco – Meta Platforms has made unusually high compensation offers to new members of its 'superintelligence' team – including a more than US$200 million (S$256 million) package for a former Apple distinguished engineer. Meta hired Pang Ruoming, who ran Apple's AI models team , with a pay package in the hundreds of millions over a several-year period, according to people with knowledge of the matter. Apple didn't try to match the offer, as it far exceeds pay at the company for leaders other than chief executive officer Tim Cook. That pay package is in line with other major hires for Meta's new superintelligence team focused on building AI systems that can complete tasks as well as or better than humans, the people said. The team now includes former GitHub chief Nat Friedman and AI start-up founder Daniel Gross. Meta tapped Scale AI co-founder Alexandr Wang as its chief AI officer by taking a 49 per cent stake in his firm worth US$14.3 billion. Meta declined to comment. Apple didn't respond to a request for comment. From a pure numbers standpoint, the superintelligence group has some of the highest compensation of any corporate job, including CEO roles at the world's major banks. But much of the money is tied up in performance targets and unlocked during years of loyalty, meaning it might not all be received if employees leave early or if the stock doesn't perform well. The compensation packages for hires to Meta superintelligence labs, or MSL, are comprised of a base salary, a signing bonus and Meta shares, with the stock as the weightiest part of the package. The salary and bonus to join are often significant cash payments. In cases where a recruit would have to walk away from significant start-up equity to join Meta, the signing bonus may be higher to account for that lost opportunity, the people said. In many cases, the new hires are agreeing to join on contracts that exceed a typical four-year vesting schedule for stock, they added. New details of the structure of the compensation package come after OpenAI CEO Sam Altman shocked Silicon Valley by describing AI talent wars with Meta on a podcast with his brother. Mr Altman said in June that Meta had offered his employees signing bonuses as high as US$100 million, along with even larger overall compensation packages, to join the company's superintelligence team. Mr Altman suggested his employees were choosing to stay at OpenAI because it had cultivated a better culture and reputation for innovation. Despite Mr Altman's remarks, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has now successfully hired more than 10 OpenAI researchers, as well as top researchers and engineers from Anthropic, Google and other start-ups. Europe: Shares close at four-week high on banks boost; US trade talks in focus

EUROPEAN shares closed at a four-week high on Wednesday, with banks the biggest boost as investors awaited signs of progress on a trade accord between the United States and the European Union. The pan-European Stoxx 600 index rose 0.78 per cent to 549.96, its highest close since June 12. Italy's bank-heavy benchmark jumped 1.6 per cent to its highest since 2007. Lender UniCredit was among the biggest gainers on the index, advancing 4.6 per cent to its highest since 2011. The Italian lender met renewed German opposition to its takeover ambitions for Commerzbank after it doubled its voting stake in the rival. A broader gauge of euro zone banks climbed 2.7 per cent to its highest level since 2010, with French bank Societe Generale also advancing 4 per cent. The index tracking European defence companies gained 1.4 per cent to reach an all-time high. German defence contractor Renk added 5 per cent after a Bloomberg report said the company was considering selling its civilian industrial unit, or part of it. Sign Up Sign Up In the latest on the trade front, the EU said it could reach an outline trade agreement with the United States in the coming days. US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that he was probably two days away from sending the EU a letter disclosing the tariff rate on its exports to the US. 'Even though a letter could be sent... the hope of the market and the sign of the negotiations is that there is a willingness to find some common ground,' said Georgios Leontaris, chief investment officer for EMEA at HSBC Global Private Banking and Premier Wealth. 'That said, we don't know exactly the terms that will be agreed. Therefore, we need to wait and see how the negotiations will play out in the coming days'. With the deadline for deals extended to Aug 1, from July 9, investors remain hopeful for more flexibility and negotiations on the table. However, Trump declared there would be 'no more extensions'. Trump also announced plans to impose a 50 per cent tariff on imported copper and said long-threatened levies on semiconductors and pharmaceuticals would be introduced soon. Shares in some European pharmaceutical companies fell, including Zealand Pharma falling 2.7 per cent and Novo Nordisk losing 1.5 per cent. At the bottom of the Stoxx 600 stood British ad group WPP, which tumbled 18.8 per cent after slashing its profit outlook. French rival Publicis also fell 1.8 per cent. Norwegian engineering group Kongsberg dropped 12 per cent as analysts said they saw some weaknesses in different parts of the results. On the bright side, EssilorLuxottica jumped 5.6 per cent following reports that Meta Platforms has acquired a nearly 3 per cent stake in the eyewear maker. REUTERS
