Passenger rail service coming to Pasir Gudang-Kempas Baru line by next year, says transport minister
Transport Minister Anthony Loke said the new service is expected to start within six to 12 months, taking into account the need to build new passenger stations along the line.
'Throughout this year, we can find at least three locations (stations) to drop off and pick up passengers,' he told reporters after officiating the reopening of the track for cargo service operations for the Kempas Baru-Pasir Gudang route, near here today.
He said the Transport Ministry will carry out studies and discuss with the state government to get suitable locations for the stations.
Loke said that for a start, the passenger services would use existing KTMB coaches and that he would consider purchasing new coaches in the future.
'We want something that can be immediately implemented within a short period. We want this project to be implemented promptly, so we will discuss with the Finance Ministry for approval and use RAC resources to finance this project,' he said.
Meanwhile, Loke said that the Pasir Gudang-Kempas Baru line has been reopened after being closed since last October for work to upgrade the 39.9-kilometre (km) track, encompassing three main sections, namely Kempas Baru-Seelong, Seelong-Johor Port and Johor Port-Pasir Gudang.
He added that the upgrading work involved repairing railway structures, building new drainage systems, replacing track and gravel and improving the signalling and safety systems, with a total project value of RM55 million.
'With the reopening of the track for the Pasir Gudang-Kempas Baru cargo service operation, KTMB will increase container handling from 140 20-foot equivalent unit (TEUs) per day previously to at least 420 TEUs per day, which is a three-fold increase.'
'Previously, KTMB only made two trips a day, but after the reopening, KTMB will have cargo trains making at least six trips daily,' he said.
He said that customers can also increase their container transfer activities not only from the Pasir Gudang Port to the Tanjung Pelepas Port but also to other ports in Peninsular Malaysia, including the Kuantan Port via the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL), Port Klang, Penang Port and even out of the country via Thailand and to China. — Bernama

Maybank Investment Bank (Maybank IB) said the upcoming Q2 results season may be muted, reflecting challenges from external uncertainties, particularly the ongoing US-Malaysia tariff negotiations. 'The Q2 results season may yet be another unexciting one but at least one with fewer earnings downgrades,' it said in a strategy note. The research house forecasts a modest 2.5% earnings growth for the FBM KLCI this year, primarily weighed down by the banking sector. However, it anticipates a stronger rebound in 2026 with a projected growth of 7.7%. It has a base case target of 1,660 points for the FBM KLCI, pegged to 14.4 times 2026 estimated price-to-earnings ratio (PER). 'Our base case assumes further de-escalation in trade tensions and favourable outcome from tariff negotiations,' it added. Some bright spots Despite the softer external environment, Maybank IB said there are 'bright spots' to be found. It noted Malaysia's domestic economic fundamentals appear encouraging, pointing to robust consumer activity, a sustained investment cycle, and signs of resilient private demand as cushioning the impact of weaker exports. The economy grew at 4.5% in Q2, slightly faster than the 4.4% year-on-year growth in Q1 as resilient consumer demand offset weaker exports. This suggests a steady growth momentum and indicates external headwinds due to US tariffs are being mitigated by domestic tailwinds, it noted. Maybank IB said investors should watch out for weakness in the technology sector. Banks are 'unlikely to yield much surprise' even as it watches for lower loan growth. However, it expects some positive momentum for construction, healthcare, property, and more selectively, the oil and gas, and utilities sectors. It said most plantation companies would be weaker quarter-on-quarter due to lower crude palm oil prices, though some could book gains from disposal and forex exchange movements. Consumer and real estate investment trusts are expected to be softer, after a seasonally strong first quarter.

Focus on SMEs to boost women in workforce, says TalentCorp official
The government plans to increase the female labour force participation rate to 60% by the end of the year. KUALA LUMPUR : A greater focus should be placed on small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) as part of efforts to increase the number of women in the workforce, says a Talent Corporation Malaysia Bhd (TalentCorp) official. TalentCorp's chief strategy officer Nazrul Aziz said it was necessary to further incentivise SMEs so that they would offer flexible working and caregiving arrangements to female employees. 'We have no issue with multinational corporations (MNCs) and GLCs. But for every 10 Malaysians, only three work for MNCs and GLCs. 'If we want to make a shift in the (labour market's) ecosystem, we need to focus on SMEs,' he said at a panel discussion on the World Bank's inclusive employment practices report launched here today. Nazrul spoke in agreement with human resources minister Steven Sim, who earlier highlighted the low participation rate in women's career comeback programmes. The TalentCorp official said SME employers needed to be further incentivised to support these programmes. 'We're providing tax incentives to companies that implement flexible working arrangements. 'But now, we have to focus more on SMEs, because MNCs and GLCs are already pretty much there (in supporting women's career comeback programmes),' he said. He added that so far, about 3,000 companies have participated in TalentCorp's advocacy programmes promoting flexible working arrangements. Former Women's Aid Organisation deputy executive director Yu Ren Chung said it was important to amend the Employment Act to outlaw discrimination against women during the hiring process. 'There's actually no law that prohibits companies from choosing not to hire someone because they might, for example, start a family. 'The Employment Act, right now, mostly covers employees, but there's no legal reason why it can't also tackle discrimination towards job seekers,' he said. Previously, World Bank economists had spoken about Malaysia's struggle to retain women in the workforce. The government's target is to increase the female labour force participation rate to 60% by the end of the year.

Johari wants review of stall demolition plan, Zaliha says don't worry
Titiwangsa MP Johari Ghani called for the road-widening project to be put on hold while federal territories minister Dr Zaliha Mustafa said DBKL would meet the stall owners soon. KUALA LUMPUR : Titiwangsa MP Johari Ghani has urged Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) to review the planned demolition of nine stalls in Desa Pandan to allow for a road-widening project. He said the road involved was just an inner road while the traders there had been operating legally for years, Berita Harian reported. 'They are licensed, and this is their source of income. So when DBKL came to demolish their stalls the other day, they were very shocked,' said Johari, who is also the plantation and commodities minister. 'Why demolish these stalls to widen a road that isn't a main road?' he asked, calling for the project to be put on hold while DBKL holds talks with stakeholders. Johari also asked if 60 other stalls further down the road would also have to make way for a road-widening project one day. 'Don't worry, we'll help the traders' Separately, federal territories minister Dr Zaliha Mustafa said DBKL had been engaging with the nine stall owners since November, acknowledging that they were licensed. She said some of them had already agreed to move while others refused to budge. Zaliha said the traders did not need to worry about losing their source of income as the federal territories department and DBKL would ensure that they have an alternative location for their stalls. 'We are supposed to meet them again this month to discuss where they will be moved to. This is part of our 'Lestari Niaga' project (to upgrade and beautify food stalls in KL) so I think they don't have to worry. 'We will do our best to help them and place them elsewhere, while giving them the facilities needed to open their stalls again,' she said when met by reporters at SMK Cochrane here. Zaliha also said that the road widening project needed to be expedited and was necessary for public use. 'I have asked the federal territories department and DBKL to meet the traders immediately and give them several options for new places to operate.' DBKL previously said the hawkers were told to vacate the site on Jan 15, but a final notice was only issued on July 4. During an operation to demolish the stalls on Tuesday, a man got into a brief stand-off with DBKL officers, brandishing a parang and shouting profanities at the officers. He was calmed down by members of the public before being arrested by the police.
