Kevin Sussman to Star in New 'Big Bang Theory' Spinoff, Reviving His Journey as Stuart
The series will also star Lauren Lapkus, Brian Posehn and John Ross Bowie
On the new series, Stuart is 'tasked with restoring reality after he breaks a device built by Sheldon and Leonard, accidentally bringing about a multiverse Armageddon,' per the official logline. The Big Bang Theory universe keeps expanding!
HBO Max ordered a second spinoff, Stuart Fails to Save the Universe, based on the characters from the celebrated CBS series.
The streamer announced on Wednesday, July 9, that Chuck Lorre Productions will produce the forthcoming sitcom, which will follow comic book store owner Stuart Bloom (Kevin Sussman) after he is 'tasked with restoring reality after he breaks a device built by Sheldon and Leonard, accidentally bringing about a multiverse Armageddon,' per the official logline.
Sussman, 54, will reprise his beloved role alongside Lauren Lapkus, who will return as Stuart's girlfriend, Denise. Additionally, former Big Bang characters geologist Bert and quantum physicist Barry Kripke will return, portrayed respectively by Brian Posehn and John Ross Bowie.
Bert, Barry, Denise and Stuart will meet alternate-universe versions of characters from The Big Bang Theory, and as the title suggests, things go awry.
Audiences were first introduced to Stuart and Barry in season 2 of the original series. As the show continued, the pair became recurring characters throughout the sitcom's entire run. The Big Bang Theory ran for 12 seasons from 2007 to 2019.
However, Denise and Bert joined the series later, with Bert entering as a recurring character in Season 6. He would appear in a total of 15 episodes. Denise was added at the end of the series' run, when she first appeared in the second episode of the final season.
Producer Chuck Lorre said in a statement that he 'wanted to do something radical,' that would in turn take him out of his 'comfort zone,' and landed on a series focused on 'something the characters on The Big Bang Theory would have loved, hated and argued about.'
Lorre will return to the Big Bang Theory universe alongside the original series co-creator, Bill Prady. The pair will serve as executive producers with Zak Penn.
Prady shared the writing alongside Lorre and Penn 'has been damn fun.'
'I'm certain that joy will come through the screen,' he said. 'Putting characters we loved from The Big Bang Theory into a complex science fiction story with the kind of mythology that those characters love while maintaining the comedic elements is incredibly satisfying.'
'I couldn't be more honored to be working with these amazing people,' Penn added.
'Chuck and Bill have given us one of the most enduring comedies of our time with The Big Bang Theory, and we can't wait to see the universe continue with this new series,' said Channing Dungey, Warner Bros. Television Group and WBD U.S. Networks chairman and CEO.
'With the help of Zak — a masterful storyteller — this next iteration promises to capture the essence of what fans loved about the original series, but with a completely fresh twist. We thank our partners HBO Max for joining us on this next adventure.'

HBO vs. HBO Max: A simple guide to what's what
If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, BGR may receive an affiliate commission. When Last Week Tonight host John Oliver mercilessly mocked his show's parent company Warner Bros. Discovery back in May over the umpteenth name change for HBO's streaming network, it was not only a hilarious bit from the cheeky host about a boneheaded marketing decision — it was also an indicator that the difference between HBO and what's now HBO Max might still be a bit… puzzling, to say the least, to some viewers. With so many names, rebrands, and mergers in the mix over the past few years, it's understandable if you're still not totally clear on what's what. So here's a quick explainer to help straighten it all out. Today's Top Deals XGIMI Prime Day deals feature the new MoGo 4 and up to 42% off smart projectors Best deals: Tech, laptops, TVs, and more sales Best Ring Video Doorbell deals Whenever anyone refers to HBO, they're talking about the legacy cable TV channel that's been around for more than 50 years. It's known for prestige dramas (The Sopranos, Succession), original documentaries, and standup comedy. If you're watching Curb Your Enthusiasm or True Detective, for example, you're watching HBO. And while all HBO shows are also available to stream, the key thing here is that these titles were created for the cable channel first and foremost. If you're watching HBO, in other words, think 'watching TV.' Here's where things can get a little confounding. HBO Max is the streaming platform that launched in 2020 and has gone through multiple branding tweaks, most recently returning to the HBO Max name after a befuddling stint as 'Max.' This streamer includes everything from the HBO TV channel, but also a lot more (hence, the 'Max' in the title). In other words, the name implies HBO supercharged with extra content. HBO Max also includes Warner Bros. movies, some live sports, and originals made exclusively for the streaming platform. Which brings us to one more thing worth clarifying: Here's a distinction that trips people up: It's also important to define releases that are branded as Max Originals, which are shows and movies created specifically for HBO Max. In other words, these have never 'aired' on the HBO cable network. That includes streaming-only titles like The Flight Attendant, Love & Death, and Tokyo Vice. The recent movie Mountainhead from Succession creator Jesse Armstrong is also a Max Original. These are part of the HBO Max library, but technically, they're not HBO releases. I know, I know — it feels like splitting hairs. To wrap up, here's what to know about the key differences between all these terms: If you're watching something branded simply as 'HBO,' it's a TV show or movie that originally aired on the HBO cable network. If it says 'Max Original,' it's exclusive to the streaming service. And HBO Max is the umbrella platform where it all lives, along with a whole lot of other Warner Bros. Discovery content. I'll admit, it's definitely understandable that it can be confusing, still. But at least now, the next time John Oliver throws shade at his own streaming home, you'll be in on the joke. Kathy Bates aims to become the oldest Drama Actress winner in Emmys history, surpassing Glenn Close
Here's a case for Matlock to solve: will Kathy Bates make Emmys history this year? In 2009, then-62-year-old Glenn Close became the oldest Best Drama Actress winner to date. It was her second consecutive trophy for Damages, and when she won the year prior at age 61, she overtook the category's previous oldest champion, Sally Field, who was 60 when she prevailed for Brothers & Sisters in 2007. More from Gold Derby Christine Tremarco reacts to 'Adolescence' Emmy nomination and Owen Cooper's historic honor: 'I'm a very proud pretend mom' 'An absolute cherry on top': Ron Howard on his first-ever acting Emmy nomination for 'The Studio' Bates turned 77 on June 28, which means, should she prevail at the 2025 Emmys on Sept. 14, she'd beat Close's record by 15 years. But as we all know, age is just a number! "I am deeply grateful to the Television Academy for this honor," said the former Best Actress Oscar winner for 1980s' Misery. "My heartfelt thanks to CBS ... for believing in us every step of the way on this beautiful journey and for being such delightful people to work with. Every day on set is a gift thanks to the dedication, talent, and friendship of our incredible cast and crew. And darling Jennie [Snyder Urman, the show creator] — thank you for seeing those of us who feel unseen, for not abandoning me, and for trusting me with Matty's complex story. This nomination really belongs to you ... what a joy it has been for all of us to pour our hearts into bringing your Matlock to life." Bates is nominated for playing Madeline "Matty" Matlock on CBS' loosely inspired remake of the classic Andy Griffith mystery legal drama. However, Matty exists in a world where the original Matlock was a TV show. She is pretending to be a folksy character with that iconic name in order to uncover which lawyer at her new firm, Jacobson Moore, hid evidence that could have prevented the opioid epidemic that led to her daughter's death. The other Best Drama Actress nominees this year are Sharon Horgan for Bad Sisters as Eva Garvey, Britt Lower for Severance as Helly R., Bella Ramsey for The Last of Us as Ellie, and Keri Russell for The Diplomat as Katherine "Kate" Wyler. From this group, only Bates has won at the Emmys before, for Two and a Half Men (guest actress, 2012) and American Horror Story: Coven (supporting actress, 2014). Horgan, Ramsey, and Russell have previously been nominated, while Lower is a first-time nominee. The new Matlock is developed by Urman. Joining Bates in the main cast are Skye P. Marshall as Olympia Lawrence, Jason Ritter as Julian Markston, David Del Rio as Billy Martinez, and Leah Lewis as Sarah Franklin. The drama received no other Emmy nominations. Bates' biggest hurdle at the Emmys has nothing to do with age. She stars on a broadcast network show, and those have had trouble breaking through at awards shows in recent years, with voters instead favoring streaming services and premium channels. In fact, the last time a CBS contender competed in the Best Drama Actress race was Julianna Margulies (The Good Wife) over a decade ago; she won in 2011 and 2014. If anyone can break out of the broadcast bubble, it's Bates. The well-respected, veteran actress prevailed at the Critics Choice Awards, and she also reaped noms at the Screen Actors Guild Awards and Golden Globes. And, don't forget, TV Academy members love legal shows — just look at prior contenders like Boston Legal, The Practice, Ally McBeal, L.A. Law, and the aforementioned Damages and The Good Wife, which all won Emmys for actors playing lawyers. Bates herself was previously nominated in this same category for playing a quirky defense attorney on Harry's Law, but couldn't pull off the win. She's predicted to have better luck this year for Matlock, as she's the early front-runner to win the Best Drama Actress Emmy. Contender Odds 1. Kathy Bates Matlock 67.8% 2. Britt Lower Severance 25.1% 3. Bella Ramsey The Last of Us 6.0% 4. Keri Russell The Diplomat 0.4% 5.
