Starlink can give only 20 lakh connections pan-India: MoS Telecom

Time of India28-07-2025
Billionaire Elon Musk-led satellite communication services provider Starlink can have only 20 lakh connections in India, Union Minister Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar said on Monday, playing down the threat to state-run
BSNL
and other telecom players.
The Minister of State for Telecom was speaking on the sidelines of a review meeting of BSNL here.
"Starlink can have only 20 lakh customers in India and offer up to 200 Mbps speed. That won't affect telecom services," the minister said.
Satcom
services are expected to target rural and remote areas where BSNL is known to have a significant presence.
He said that the upfront cost for satcom services will be too high, and the monthly cost may be around ₹3,000.
The minister said that the BSNL 4G rollout is complete, and it does not plan to increase tariffs as of now. "We want market first. There are no tariff hikes planned."

White House readies order to fine banks for dropping clients over politics, Reports

Synopsis The White House is reportedly drafting an executive order to penalize banks for dropping customers based on political affiliations. Regulators would investigate potential violations of credit, antitrust, and consumer protection laws, with monetary penalties possible. This action follows accusations that banks are engaging in 'woke capitalism' by cutting ties with certain businesses, prompting a broader review of financial institution practices. AP White House The White House is drafting an executive order that would impose penalties on banks for dropping customers for political reasons, the Wall Street Journal reported on Monday. Citing a draft of the order, the Journal said regulators would be instructed to investigate whether any financial institutions breach the Equal Credit Opportunity Act, antitrust laws or consumer financial protection laws. The order, which could be signed as early as this week, would authorize monetary penalties, consent decrees or other disciplinary measures against violators, the Journal reported. It also calls on regulators to strike policies they have that might have contributed to banks dropping certain customers and requires the Small Business Administration to review the practices of banks that guarantee the agency's loans, according to the report. U.S. President Donald Trump in January said the CEOs of JPMorgan Chase and Bank of America did not provide banking services to conservatives. The two banks denied making banking decisions based on politics. The criticism of Wall Street banks followed accusations from congressional Republicans and Republican-led states, who claimed the institutions were engaging in "woke capitalism" and unfairly cutting ties with gun manufacturers, fossil fuel companies, and other businesses perceived to be aligned with the political right. The Trump administration is pursuing a broad reform agenda aimed at modifying rules governing financial institutions, including capital requirements, arguing that such action will boost economic growth and unleash innovation. The White House did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.

Assam leads digital leap: NRL inks agreement with BSNL to host India's 1st 5G captive network

1 2 Guwahati: In a landmark move for India's digital infrastructure transforming core industries through next-generation connectivity, Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL) in Golaghat district has signed an agreement with Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) to deploy the country's first 5G captive non-public network (CNPN) in the industrial sector. The agreement was formalised during a workshop organized by the union finance ministry here, setting the stage for a new era of industrial digitisation in Assam and beyond. Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in a post on X hailed the development as a proud moment for the state and "A big leap for #DigitalAssam & #AtmanirbharBharat—ushering IoT, AR/VR, Big Data into our industrial future." A 5G CNPN is a private 5G network built by an organisation for its own exclusive use, separate from public telecom networks. The deployment of the CNPN will enable secure, ultra-reliable, and high-speed connectivity within the refinery premises, allowing NRL to integrate cutting-edge technologies. BSNL chairman cum managing director Robert J Ravi said the partnership exemplifies the telco's commitment to empowering India's strategic sectors with next-generation digital infrastructure. "The deployment of a dedicated 5G CNPN at NRL will mark a technological leap forward — not only in connectivity but in redefining how core industries can operate in the future. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Stylish New Mobility Scooters Available for Seniors (Prices May Surprise You) Mobility Scooter | Search Ads Search Now Undo As a trusted public telecom provider, BSNL is proud to pioneer this journey toward a self-reliant, digitally intelligent Bharat," he added. An official of the NRL said the integration of 5G CNPN will not only enhance operational efficiency and cybersecurity but also enable transformative technologies such as AR and VR-based training, digital twins, and real-time IoT applications. Model for Replication The deployment is expected to serve as a replicable model for other industrial sectors across India. The initiative aligns with govt's vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat and supports digital transformation of India's manufacturing and energy sectors.

20 years on, GDA may file FIR against officials for 134 extra flats in society

Ghaziabad: GDA will take action against several current and former officials who allowed a private developer to construct and sell 134 extra flats beyond the sanctioned 400 units at Express Garden society in Indirapuram's Vaibhav Khand in 2005. A GDA panel, set up on the direction of the Allahabad High Court, is set to submit its report to the Authority's additional secretary later this week. The high court is due to hear the matter in Sept. Officials, privy to the content of the committee's findings, said the panel has recommended "FIR be filed against the architect, developer and the then GDA officials under whose watch the additional units were constructed". "During the hearing, it was learnt that the promoter had constructed 534 units in place of the sanctioned 400 in the project map," Vijay Rathi, a resident who is also one of the complainants, said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Use an AI Writing Tool That Actually Understands Your Voice Grammarly Install Now Undo A single judge bench of Justice Rohit Ranjan Agarwal, in an order dated Dec 20, 2023, said, "The vice-chairman is to initiate/conduct an inquiry against the subordinate staff who are responsible for monitoring the project in which an additional 134 units have been carved out against the sanctioned strength of 400 units." Last Feb, TOI reported that the internal probe by the GDA had zeroed in on some officials deputed mostly at the development authority's enforcement wing between 2008 and 2012, and notices had been served to them. Developer Pankaj Goyal, meanwhile, said he was not aware of any probe by a GDA-led panel against the project. "We did not tamper with the covered area but subdivided bigger flats to carve out 134 extra units," Goyal said. "We are for regularising the extra units as per the provisions of Building Bylaws, 2016, for which we approached the state govt and got the necessary sanction. This will be presented in the court." In 2005, the GDA approved the layout of Express Garden, allowing the construction of 400 flats on plot number 6 of Vaibhav Khand. The construction was completed between 2008-12.
