As the holy month of Ramadan draws near, businesses across the UAE are gearing up for the change in working hours. Working hours have been reduced by two hours for private sector employees, along with flexible hours and remote work options for government employees.
Companies are not only adjusting their schedules but are also exploring innovative strategies to ensure operations run smoothly while respecting the needs of their employees.
One such business adapting to these changes is a local food truck, Atifa. The owner, Ahmed Mahdi, shared how Ramadan transforms the culinary landscape. 'Our hours shift significantly during this month. We tend to open later in the evening to cater to families breaking their fast. It's about being in tune with the community,' he explained.
Ahmed also emphasises the importance of menu adjustments. 'We introduce special meals that are hearty and nutritious, designed to refuel our customers after a long day of fasting. It's not just about food; it's about creating an experience that resonates with the spirit of Ramadan.'
He highlighted how his team is trained to maintain high morale despite the late hours, often sharing iftar meals together, fostering a sense of unity and purpose among the staff.
To ensure his employees remain well-rested during this demanding period, Ahmed has implemented a structured schedule. 'During the day, our team has dedicated rest hours. They come in about one to two hours before iftar to prepare the food and set up the truck. This allows them to recharge and be ready for the evening rush,' he explained.
He also recognises the importance of family during Ramadan. 'I've made a schedule that allows employees to shift their iftar times, so everyone gets a chance to break fast with their families. It's crucial for maintaining morale and keeping the team motivated,' he added.
However, with the evening hours becoming busier than usua l, especially during suhoor, Ahmed sometimes opts not to open at iftar times. 'Suhoor is typically our busiest period, so we focus our efforts there. We even take a break during Taraweeh prayers to allow our team to participate,' he shared.
HR strategies
As the UAE has announced a reduction of two working hours for private sector employees during Ramadan, Fahima Mustafa, an HR manager at Miasee Advertising, discussed the critical role of HR in navigating these changes. 'We recognise that our employees' energy levels fluctuate during this month, so we've implemented flexible working hours. Employees can choose to start and end their shifts according to their needs, as long as they meet their targets,' she said.
In addition to flexible hours, Fahima notes that the company has introduced the option of remote work. 'As long as the work is done, we trust our employees to manage their responsibilities from home. This flexibility allows them to balance their work and personal lives more effectively during Ramadan,' she explains.
As an advertising company, Fahima understands that the pressure can be higher during this month due to deadlines and client expectations. 'However, we prioritise our employees' well-being. By putting them first, we create an environment where they can perform at their best without compromising their health or personal commitments,' she affirmed. This employee-first approach not only fosters loyalty but also enhances overall productivity, ensuring that the company thrives even during the challenges of Ramadan.
Retail stores
Murad Amid, a retail store manager, sheds light on the retail sector's response to the unique challenges of Ramadan. 'Foot traffic changes dramatically during this month. We see a surge in customers in the evenings, so we extend our hours accordingly,' he explained.
To meet the increased demand, Murad's team has adopted a staggered shift system, allowing employees to work in shorter bursts but more frequently. This flexibility has encouraged collaboration among the staff. For example, non-Muslim employees are coming forward to take the morning shifts, which allows their Muslim colleagues to rest and prepare for iftar without the stress of work.

We see strong potential for it among young professionals and families in the Middle East. What makes the K4 a compelling proposition for this region? It's bold and dynamic in design, loaded with advanced connectivity, and offers great value. These are features Middle East customers now expect even in non-premium segments. The K4 answers that demand. What about the new Tasman pickup — will it come to the Middle East? Yes. Off-roading is embedded in the lifestyle here, and that's shaping how we approach product development and positioning. Ajman government will adopt an updated job classification system, to ensure transparency in the evaluation of jobs and tasks in the public sector. This comes under a decision issued Sheikh Ahmed bin Humaid Al Nuaimi, representative of the Ruler of Ajman for Administrative and Financial Affairs. Several main and sub job groups have been created or modified in the system, to meet the needs of both existing and new government entities. In the education job group, three sub-groups were adopted: education, school administration, and student affairs. For the communication, promotion, and media job group, several sub-groups were created and modified, including: institutional communication and media, marketing, promotion and events, public relations, institutional partnerships, digital media, media documentation, editing and journalism, and photography. In the digital technology and data job group, a range of precise technical specialties were included, namely: Digital technology and data, information systems development and analysis, data science, artificial intelligence, digital infrastructure, information technology databases, cybersecurity, and technical support. The adoption of this updated system is based on amendments and developments introduced to the previous system issued under Decision No. (7) of 2021. The Department of Human Resources in Ajman will oversee the implementation of the system in government entities by issuing circulars, guides, and required forms. It shall submit reports documenting the progress made and the challenges that entities may face, along with providing recommendations and technical support. The new decision also repealed all previous decisions or systems related to job evaluation and classification that conflict with its provisions. The emirate called on government entities to review their job listings, align them with the new groups, and submit modification requests through the approved electronic job evaluation and classification system.

Recent data from Syrve MENA, a leading restaurant software provider in the Middle East, reveals that the first half of 2025 brought about a substantial shift in consumer behaviour in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. According to Syrve MENA data, food aggregators continue to be the most popular mobile order channel in both markets. Approximately 75% of mobile orders placed by surveyed restaurants are processed by apps like HungerStation, Talabat, and Deliveroo. The remaining 25% is handled by call centres, proprietary apps, and websites run by restaurants — a tactic that larger chains seeking greater control over operational procedures can afford. Syrve MENA reported that the majority of orders come from mobile devices. More than 70% of all food delivery transactions are made through mobile phones, reflecting the region's preference for digital convenience. While it is challenging to accurately estimate the increase in mobile orders in H1 2025 compared to 2024, Talabat reports a 30% year-over-year increase in Gross Merchandise Value (GMV) in Q1, which may indicate a significant rise in order volume in H1 2025. Revenue and adjusted EBITDA both grew by 34%, while adjusted net income rose by 24%. Seasonal trends and daily delivery patterns Syrve MENA reported that mobile delivery activity in the UAE reached its first peak in March 2025, coinciding with Ramadan, a time traditionally associated with increased food ordering. Another seasonal surge is expected between June and September, when high temperatures make outdoor dining less appealing and consumers turn to delivery more often. The time slot from 8:00 PM to 11:00 PM consistently yields the highest volume of mobile delivery orders across most restaurant categories. For fast food, Italian, Indian, and international restaurant chains, this evening window is the most popular. However, Arabic food exhibits a distinct trend, with traditional breakfast items driving the highest delivery activity between 10:00 AM and 12:00 PM. Popular dishes range from kebabs in Arabic restaurants to rotis and butter naan in Indian chains. In the global H1 2025 market, the most popular time for food ordering is generally 6:00 PM local time, according to restaurant industry reports. Additionally, there's a noticeable increase in breakfast orders, particularly on Monday mornings. The later evening peak in orders observed in the UAE and Saudi Arabia may be linked to Ramadan, when evening meals shift to after sunset. UAE vs. Saudi Arabia: Comparing the Markets Despite differences in scale and speed, both the UAE and Saudi Arabia are experiencing mobile-driven growth. Through 2033, the UAE's online meal delivery industry is anticipated to expand at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 10.2%, driven by consumer demands for convenience, speed, and loyalty benefits. The Saudi Arabian market is significantly larger and is projected to grow at a 15.4% CAGR through 2030. This surge is primarily driven by urbanisation, advanced digital infrastructure including widespread internet access and smartphone usage, and a growing middle class with increasing disposable income and preference for digital convenience. Mobile-based delivery will remain central to foodservice strategy in both the UAE and Saudi Arabia as they continue to develop digitally and increase mobile order volumes by over 10% year-on-year. Consistent seasonal peaks, changing spending habits, and rapidly advancing technology are making mobile-first dining the new norm, said Alexander Ponomarev, CEO at Syrve MENA. According to reports, as mobile order volumes continue to grow steadily and consumers demand digital convenience, forecasts predict that the share of mobile-based orders will exceed 80% in both markets by the end of 2025. This trend is further fueled by high digital penetration, making the digital transformation of the food delivery market inevitable.
