Tencent seeks to buy stake in Nexon at $15b

Korea Herald13-06-2025
Tencent is reportedly considering acquiring a stake in South Korean game giant Nexon at 20 trillion won ($15 billion), a move that would further solidify the Chinese tech giant's presence in the Korean cultural content market.
According to Bloomberg, Tencent Holdings has reached out to the family of Nexon's late founder Kim Jung-ju to discuss the possibility of an acquisition. The report added that the size or structure of the deal is unclear. Both Tencent and Nexon have declined to respond to the report.
Kim's wife and daughters own about 67.6 percent of the game giant's holding company NXC. Through NXC, they own a 44.4 percent stake in Nexon. Considering the stakes, the deal is estimated to be worth 20 trillion won.
The other 30.64 percent stake in NXC is owned by the Korean government. Kim's relatives turned in the shares worth roughly 4.7 trillion won to the government to pay off an inheritance tax. The Finance Ministry has been trying to sell the stake through a tender offer but has failed on multiple occasions.
Tencent has long shown interest in Nexon. In 2019, it was named as a potential bidder when NXC was put up for sale. It ultimately did not participate in the bidding. At the time, market big names including Kakao and Netmarble submitted bids, but the sale was eventually called off without a deal.
Tencent has been pushing to tighten its grip on the Korean cultural content market through strategic equity investments, holding 34.76 percent stake in Shift Up, 13.71 percent of Krafton, and 17.52 percent in Netmarble, making it the second-largest shareholder in each. It is also the third-largest shareholder in Kakao Games with a 3.88 percent stake.
In May, Tencent Music Entertainment, a subsidiary of the Chinese tech giant, acquired the entire 9.38 percent stake of K-pop powerhouse SM Entertainment held by Hybe, valued at approximately 200 billion won. The acquisition positioned Tencent as the second-largest effective shareholder of SM.
With the talks of an acquisition deal brewing up, shares of Tokyo-listed Nexon surged as much as 10 percent shortly after the market started trading Friday. Seoul-listed Nexon Games saw a 10 percent surge in its share price as well.

North Korea bars Western influencers from trade fair tour

North Korea has barred Western influencers from joining a delegation of tourists to an international trade fair in October, a China-based tour operator told AFP on Monday. Diplomatically isolated North Korea has welcomed sporadic groups of international visitors in recent months, including hundreds of foreign athletes in April for the first Pyongyang International Marathon in six years. China has historically been the biggest diplomatic, economic and political backer of North Korea, which remains under crippling international sanctions. Travel agency Young Pioneer Tours (YPT) said on Saturday it would take a group of foreign tourists on a trip to the authoritarian state from October 24 to November 1. However, the tour would not be open to journalists, travel content creators or influencers, the company said on its website. YPT co-founder Rowan Beard told AFP the curbs on creators were "a specific request from the North Korean side". "We anticipate that once the country officially reopens, there may be stricter scrutiny or limitations on influencers and YouTubers joining tours," Beard said. The company had "no visibility" on when Pyongyang would restart official media delegations, he said. Several online influencers have shared slickly produced videos from inside North Korea in recent months. Chad O'Carroll, founder of specialist website NK News, said many influencers tend to have larger audiences than professional journalists, but "they are normally working without editors and tend to gain extra views through sensationalist-style content". "North Korean authorities likely see few benefits and major risks with allowing social media influencers to visit the country, given what we saw earlier this year," O'Carroll told AFP. "The result is a community of potential visitors who, in DPRK authorities' minds, are not likely to produce content that is favourable to state interests," he said, using North Korea's official name. The YPT tour, priced at 3,995 euros ($4,704), will depart from the Chinese capital Beijing and take in the Pyongyang Autumn International Trade Fair, North Korea's biggest international business exhibition. Participants will have a "unique chance" to stroll through more than 450 trade booths exhibiting machinery, information technology, energy, pharmaceuticals, consumer goods and household items. YPT also said the Pyongyang Chamber of Commerce would "hold a VIP presentation for us for an in-depth overview and insights into the (North Korean) economy". The itinerary also includes major sights in Pyongyang as well as the first Western visit in more than five years to Mount Myohyang, which boasts a museum of lavish gifts presented to former North Korean leaders. Chinese people used to make up the bulk of foreign tourists and business visitors to the isolated nuclear nation before it sealed its borders during the Covid-19 pandemic. However, numbers have not rebounded despite Pyongyang's post-pandemic reopening, a trend that some analysts have attributed to Beijing's anger at North Korea's explicit support for Russia's invasion of Ukraine. GM Korea's labor dispute intensifies over possible walkout, facility sale tensions amid US tariff woes

An ongoing labor dispute at GM Korea, the South Korean unit of General Motors, has escalated as the union secured the legal right to strike following a breakdown in wage negotiations, sources said Monday, fueling concerns that the American auto giant may scale back its production in South Korea amid the threat of US auto tariffs. According to the sources, the National Labor Relations Commission earlier in the day suspended its mediation of wage negotiations between GM Korea's management and the union, citing deep differences in the positions between the two sides. The suspension legally allows the union to begin collective action, intensifying a standoff already marked by widespread worker opposition to the company's plan to sell GM's South Korean service centers nationwide and unutilized facilities at its plant in Bupyeong in Incheon, west of Seoul. The union has demanded the withdrawal of the asset sale plan as a precondition for the wage negotiations. In a vote carried out last month, 88.2 percent of GM Korea's 6,851 union members voted in favor of a walkout, the highest approval rate for a strike in the union's history. The dispute comes amid mounting anxiety over the possibility that GM could reduce or eliminate its South Korean manufacturing footprint if the United States maintains its 25 percent tariffs on auto imports, part of a policy pledge of US President Donald Trump during his reelection campaign. GM Korea exports approximately 410,000 vehicles annually, with about 85 percent of those shipments headed to the US. On the wage front, the union is demanding a monthly base salary increase of 141,300 won ($103) and a performance-based bonus of 41.36 million won per worker. In contrast, GM Korea's management has defended its restructuring plan, informing employees of its intent to gradually sell the company's service centers and dispose of low-utilization facilities. The company says customer support will continue via its 386 partner service centers in the country and that employees at the affected sites will retain their jobs. A union spokesperson said unless the company withdraws its sale plans, labor will hold internal discussions to raise the intensity of its actions, adding, "We are keeping all options open." (Yonhap)

The second annual Offshore Wind Supply Chain Conference & Exhibition was held on Wednesday and Thursday at Bexco convention center in Busan. This year's event brought together 74 offshore wind supply chain companies from around the world, including those from the United Kingdom, Japan, Taiwan and the Netherlands. This was twice the number of companies from last year and attracted 2,250 visitors. 'With the successful completion of both last year's and this year's events, the Offshore Wind Supply Chain Conference & Exhibition has firmly established itself as Korea's leading offshore wind power industry gathering,' said an association official. During the event, industry leaders and experts discussed a range of topics, including Korea's policy support, changes in wind farm financing under the second Donald Trump administration and strategies to enhance regional collaboration in Asia's offshore wind industry. According to the association, Korean energy solutions provider Doosan Enerbility signed partnership agreements with 10 companies during the event to jointly strengthen the offshore wind supply chain. Additionally, 44 meetings were held between Korean supply chain businesses and global developers. FoundOcean of the UK, a world-leading company specializing in securing offshore structures to the seabed, also signed a technology collaboration agreement with K-BETS, a leading Korean offshore structure specialist. New programs, such as tours to nearby supply chain businesses in Busan, Ulsan and South Gyeongsang Province, also received positive feedback, the association said. 'The KWEIA will keep striving to highlight Korea's supply chain capabilities and help revitalize the domestic wind power market,' the official added.
