LAHAD DATU: The Public Works Department (JKR), contractors, and project centres involved in the Pan Borneo Highway development have been urged to proactively identify potential risks that could disrupt project progress. Works Minister Datuk Ir. Shahelmey Yahya said early identification of risks is essential to minimise negative impact and ensure the project stays on track. 'This proactive approach will help ensure the project is completed according to schedule,' he said during a visit to Package 20 of the Pan Borneo Highway project site in Lahad Datu on Tuesday. As part of the visit, Shahelmey was also briefed by JKR on the project's current progress. According to him, the project's physical completion currently stands at only 1.6 per cent, though still within the contractual timeline. However, he acknowledged that the percentage is relatively low, especially considering that the Letter of Acceptance (SST) was issued nearly eight months ago. 'I was informed that works are still largely focused on land assessment and evaluating affected houses,' he said, identifying this as the main reason behind the slow progress on the ground. In response, Shahelmey directed the contractor to identify sections along Package 20 that are not affected by land acquisition issues, so that physical works such as clearing and alignment formation can proceed without delay. 'At least one kilometre of clearing and alignment works has started, and I hope this momentum will continue to improve over time,' he added. He also stressed the importance of maintaining existing roads currently in use by the public, and called for serious attention to safety and traffic management throughout the Pan Borneo Highway construction period. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Summonses issued to company, not drivers, Loke tells KDEB
Published on: Thursday, June 26, 2025 Published on: Thu, Jun 26, 2025 By: Chia Wan Rou, FMT Text Size: Transport minister Loke Siew Fook said that owners must take responsibility when their vehicles are issued traffic summonses. Kuala Lumpur: Companies operating commercial vehicles must bear the responsibility when their vehicles are slapped with traffic summonses, says transport minister Loke Siew Fook. This comes after KDEB Waste Management Sdn Bhd, a solid waste management company owned by the Selangor government, blamed its 22,017 outstanding summonses on its drivers' failure to hand them over. 'Summonses are summonses. The operating permit is issued to KDEB, not the drivers. When the vehicle is slapped with a summons, the owner has to take responsibility. 'How they manage their drivers is an internal matter,' Loke said at a press conference here. He added that it was up to KDEB to determine how it planned to pay the unpaid summonses. Yesterday, the minister revealed that 11 commercial vehicle operators had been found to have over 1,000 outstanding summonses, including 17 express bus companies with more than 200 each. KDEB topped the list with 22,017 active summonses for offences such as technical violations, driving without a valid licence, overloading, operating without a vehicle permit, and speeding. The companies were given 14 days to settle their outstanding summonses. KDEB managing director Ramli Tahir told FMT that the company owns nearly 1,400 lorries registered under its name, operated by subcontractors managing solid waste collection across Selangor. Ramli said the drivers who were issued summonses would usually hide them instead of passing them to the contractors or the company, leaving KDEB in the dark. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
