Sadly, that wish never came true,' said George Kallivayalil, Chief of Bureau at Deepika and chairman of the organising committee, in his introductory speech.
The event also featured speeches by Minister of State for Minority Affairs George Kurian, CBCI Secretary General and Archbishop of Delhi Rev. Dr. Anil Couto, AICC General Secretary Jairam Ramesh MP, Kerala Congress (M) Chairman Jose K. Mani MP, and CPM leader A.A. Rahim MP.

The Chief Minister said that about 1,000 migrants from the State have been either detained or pushed back into Bangladesh. There have been reports of migrants being detained in Odisha, Haryana and Delhi. Some migrants from the State have been pushed into Bangladesh. On Thursday (July 24, 2025), women from Harishchandrapur in Malda held protests against harassment of migrants from the State. The protesters included both Hindu and Muslim women who raised slogans against the alleged atrocities of migrants from the area working in Haryana.

Govt to finalise 27% ethanol blending norms by August: Nitin Gadkari
The Indian government will introduce guidelines for 27 per cent ethanol blending in petrol by the end of August, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari announced on Thursday. In 2023, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched petrol blended with 20 per cent ethanol. Speaking at an event, Gadkari said, 'India has already achieved its target of 20 per cent ethanol blending. In Brazil, the ethanol blend in gasoline is 27 per cent.' Currently, Indian vehicles can run on E20 petrol with minor changes to the engine to prevent corrosion and other issues. Finalising standards for E27 India relies on imports to meet 85 per cent of its oil requirements. 'We import fossil fuels worth ₹22 lakh crore, which is also causing pollution... so diversifying agriculture towards the energy and power sector is the need of the hour,' he added. Flex-fuel vehicle push Gadkari noted that 11 automobile manufacturers have already developed vehicles with flex-fuel engines. 'India is food surplus and there is a need to protect the interests of farmers,' he said. Ethanol, which can be produced from sugarcane, broken rice and other agricultural products, is expected to help reduce India's dependence on foreign oil. India is currently the world's third-largest oil consumer and imports about 88 per cent of its crude oil requirements, making it vulnerable to geopolitical vagaries that can impact crude prices. India achieved its earlier goal of 10 per cent ethanol blending in June 2022, well ahead of the original deadline of November 2022. Reducing pollution a shared duty: Gadkari Earlier this month, Gadkari said that reducing pollution from fossil fuel-powered vehicles is a key responsibility shared by all stakeholders. At an event hosted by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), Gadkari highlighted the importance of switching to cleaner alternatives. He stated that promoting fuels such as ethanol and carrying out widespread tree plantation campaigns are among the most effective ways to tackle pollution. According to him, the government is actively working on both these fronts. To support environmental sustainability, the minister said the government is also making productive use of waste materials in infrastructure projects. He noted that around 8 million tonnes of waste have been used so far in the construction of roads.

Govt Has No Intent To Remove ‘Socialist' And ‘Secular' From Preamble: Law Minister Meghwal
The Central government has clarified that it has no current plan or intention to remove the words 'socialist' and 'secular' from the Preamble of the Constitution. Responding to a question raised by Samajwadi Party MP Ramji Lal Suman in the Rajya Sabha, Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal on Thursday said that although some groups are advocating the removal of the words "socialist" and "secular" from the Preamble of the Indian Constitution, no formal decision or proposal has been announced by the government yet. 'The Indian government has not formally initiated any legal or constitutional process to remove the words 'socialist' and 'secular' from the Preamble. While there may be discussions or debates in certain public or political circles, no formal decision or proposal has been announced by the government regarding amendments to these terms,' Meghwal clarified. Reiterating the government's position, he added: 'There is no current plan or intent to reconsider or remove the words from the Preamble. Any such constitutional amendment would require broad political consensus and detailed deliberation — and at present, no such process has been initiated.' His statement follows recent remarks by RSS General Secretary Dattatreya Hosabale, who in June called for a national discussion on whether these words, added during the Emergency via the 42nd Constitutional Amendment (1976), should remain in the Preamble. Meghwal distinguished the government's stance from the views expressed by leaders of social organisations. 'It is possible that some groups are expressing opinions or advocating for a reconsideration of these words. Such discussions may contribute to public discourse, but they do not reflect the official position or actions of the government,' he said. Citing a Supreme Court ruling from November 2024 in Dr Balram Singh and Others vs Union of India, Minister Meghwal said: 'The court clarified that 'socialism' in the Indian context signifies a welfare state and does not impede private sector growth, while 'secularism' is integral to the Constitution's basic structure.'
