Bhubaneswar: CM Mohan Charan Majhi on Saturday asserted that prompt govt response would be taken after a 15-year-old girl was set ablaze by three miscreants in Puri, even as the incident sparked political outrage.
Addressing a news conference, Majhi said the govt is in constant touch with the AIIMS authorities to ensure best care for the injured girl, while police have launched a manhunt to nab the accused.
"If the situation warrants, she will be airlifted to AIIMS New Delhi. Her condition is stable, and she is speaking," the CM said. Majhi said the truth will come out and the inquiry will determine if there was any conspiracy. "Stringent action as per law will be taken against the culprits," he said.
Earlier in the day, former CM Naveen Patnaik said criminals have become emboldened under the BJP govt. Pointing out that the Puri incident happened within a week of a young college girl setting herself ablaze in Balasore after she was allegedly denied justice, Naveen wrote on X, "These incidents occurring with shocking regularity point to a deep systemic failure of governance. It shows that criminals have become emboldened under the present govt and are not worried about being punished.

Naveen said Odisha is becoming highly unsafe for women due to alleged govt inaction and political patronage and urged the govt to take speedy action. Echoing similar sentiments, state Congress president Bhakta Charan Das said criminals are operating without fear of the govt, administration or police. "Even though such incidents keep happening repeatedly, the govt and administration have turned into mere spectators.
Female students and women are unsafe in the state," he wrote.
State BJP president Manmohan Samal said the state govt has taken the incident with utmost seriousness and would ensure strict action against the culprits. "Ensuring justice is our primary responsibility. We will strive to ensure that the perpetrators receive exemplary punishment," he said.

Blow softens for Japanese knives: Trump rolls back to 15%; Seki CEO sees strategy, not surprise

Donald Trump In Seki, a Japanese city with a 700-year legacy of blademaking, news that US tariffs on Japanese goods will be reduced from 25% to 15% starting August 1 has been met with calm acceptance, and some skepticism. Around 40% of Seki's kitchen knives are exported to the United States, according to local authorities. But Katsumi Sumikama, head of Sumikama Cutlery, isn't rushing to celebrate. 'Lower tariffs are better,' he said, 'but I'm not that surprised.' Sumikama suspects the tariff rollback was part of a calculated play by US President Donald Trump. 'It's so Trump-like, propose something extreme first, then scale it back to look like a win.' The tariff reduction comes as part of a broader trade push by Trump, who vowed to strike '90 deals in 90 days.' Japan joined four other nations, Britain, Vietnam, Indonesia and the Philippines, in finalizing an agreement with Washington by the July-end deadline. While headlines have largely focused on the impact of tariffs on Japan's auto and steel industries, the high-end Japanese kitchen knife sector, a growing favorite among US chefs and home cooks, is also deeply intertwined with American demand. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Use an AI Writing Tool That Actually Understands Your Voice Grammarly Install Now Undo Despite the tariffs, Sumikama said his company did not plan any price hikes for the US market. North American exports account for a modest five percent of the firm's revenue, with more sales flowing to Europe and Asia. Seki's artisans have long adapted to global pressures. 'We've weathered the storm,' said Sumikama, recalling past currency shocks and the 2008 financial crisis. His US clients, he added, are also used to uncertainty and 'not worried at all.' Still, Sumikama had a warning: 'If Trump thinks he can make America strong just by raising tariffs, he's mistaken. The American people will ultimately pay the price.' Sumikama Cutlery employs about 30 workers, blending cutting-edge machinery with hand-finishing to produce blades accurate to one-thousandth of a millimeter. Their knives are known for their durability, sharpness, and subtle 'wabi-sabi' beauty, a quality that, as Sumikama notes, cannot be mass-produced elsewhere. 'Even if President Trump tells people to make Japanese-style knives, they cannot,' he said.

There will be discussions on the Readjustment of Representation of Scheduled Tribes in Assembly Constituencies of the State of Goa Bill. There is an opportunity for a discussion on Scheduled Tribes. It is not good if you don't give this a chance. I request you to kindly sit back. Let there be a discussion. We have lost precious time in two days. Kindly allow the bill to be discussed... You cannot bring the placards like this. In spite of my repeated requests, you don't want discussions on the bill. It is very unfortunate that you don't want a discussion on STs of Goa. The house has been adjourned till 11 am on July 24," the Acting Speaker said. Earlier today, Lok Sabha was first adjourned till 12 pm, minutes after it convened. The Lower House was adjourned again till 2 pm, shortly after it reconvened amid opposition protest. In both houses, opposition MPs raised slogans and held placards, demanding a discussion on the revision of the electoral roll in Bihar. Earlier in the day, Lok Sabha speaker had adjourned the house as opposition members continued their protests demanding a discussion on key issues, including the SIR exercise being carried out by the Election Commission in Bihar. Objecting to the use of placards in the well of the House, the Speaker said, "The nation is watching your behaviour and conduct. I will have to take decisive action against members bringing banners. This house is for discussion and dialogue, not for sloganeering. Maintain the decorum of the house," Birla said before adjourning the lower house. The opposition leaders have been demanding that the Prime Minister address both houses and the nation on crucial issues, including the ghastly Pahalgam terror attack and the ongoing SIR exercise being carried out by the Election Commission in Bihar ahead of the upcoming assembly elections. The opposition has also demanded that PM Modi respond to the repeated claims made by US President Donald Trump of initiating "ceasefire" between India and Pakistan following Operation Sindoor.

Fresno shooting: Kuvar Kumar killed outside home; police say attack 'not random'

A 33-year-old man, identified as Kuvar Kumar, was shot and killed outside his home in northwest Fresno on the evening of Monday, 21 July. Fresno Police said officers were dispatched to the area of State Avenue and Acacia Avenue at around 6:52 pm following reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, officers found Kumar unresponsive with multiple gunshot wounds. Despite life-saving efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene. According to investigators, Kumar had just returned home when he was ambushed and fatally shot. Two people were reportedly inside the residence at the time of the attack, including Kumar's brother. Homicide detectives who responded to the scene say the presence of two distinct types of shell casings suggests there may have been more than one shooter. Police believe the act was targeted rather than random. The Fresno Police Department is actively canvassing the neighbourhood in search of witnesses or surveillance footage that may assist in identifying the suspects. No descriptions of the attackers have been released yet, and authorities have urged the public to come forward with any relevant information. 'This is an active investigation, and we are asking anyone who may have seen or heard anything to reach out,' said a spokesperson. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Is it legal?
