The Very Complicated Mercedes-AMG One Hypercar Has a Fire Problem
The latest car news, reviews, and features.
What's the saying? Two's company, but three's a crowd? It appears Mercedes-Benz has decided to intervene before any more of its AMG One hypercars burn to the ground, issuing a recall in its home country to address a fire risk related to its adjustable aerodynamics system. Per Mercedes, incorrectly installed (or missing) components of the hydraulic system that controls the rear wing can lead to a fluid leak, and hydraulic fluid has a habit of bursting into flames if you even look at it funny.
The hydraulic rear wing is one of many adjustable components found on the AMG One, each of which interacts with the car's complex drive mode system. Apart from its outright performance, this song-and-dance is arguably the car's neatest party trick, and since the wing deploys based on several different parameters, it's not a simple set-and-forget feature that could be ignored by owners. Of the approximately 275 examples known to exist, 219 examples of them worldwide will have to be inspected to ensure their safe assembly.
Mercedes-Benz stopped short of publicly associating the issue with the fires that have completely consumed two examples of its Formula 1 car for the street, but then its notice really doesn't include much of anything at all apart from a brief, dry description of the potential defect. You can look it up here; just bring your browser's translate feature. If we run with the assumption that this fix is related, it obviously came too late for the owners of the two now-lost examples that we know of.

The most recent AMG One self-immolation (linked above) happened on public roads in Germany, and was the first known example of a car being lost to fire in customer hands. The previous fire happened back in 2023, before many of the cars had been delivered. That car caught fire in a transporter while being moved between assembly facilities, Mercedes later confirmed. The company offered no insight as to the cause of that conflagration.

UK Car Output Hits 76-Year Low
UK car production plunged to its lowest level since 1949 last month, as Aston Martin and other British carmakers halted exports to the United States amid president Donald Trump's escalating trade war. Data released on Friday by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) found that UK factories turned out just 49,810 cars and vans in the month of May, down 33 per cent on the year and the worst monthly performance in 76 years, outside the COVID-19 shutdowns of 2020. The collapse comes after Trump imposed steep tariffs on foreign-made cars, prompting British firms like Aston Martin and Jaguar Land Rover to suspend US-bound shipments from April. Exports to the US fell by 55 per cent in May, slashing the American market's share of UK automotive exports from 18 per cent to just 11 per cent. Exports to the EU, meanwhile, dropped 22.5 per cent. The trade standstill could ease next week, however, when a new UK-US trade deal comes into force. Under the agreement, the US will reduce its automotive import tariff from 27.5 per cent down to 10 per cent of the first 100,000 UK-made vehicles shipped annually. The deal, announced by Trump on 16 June during the G7 summit in Canada, follows weeks of turbulence triggered by his so-called 'liberation day' tariffs blitz, which raised levies across steel, car and aluminium imports from US trading partners. Aston Martin, which had slashed exports to the US at the end of April in response to tariff chaos, saw its shares plunge from 119p to below 60p during the height of the fallout. Although the FTSE 250 stock rallied nearly 13 per cent on the day the deal was announced, it has since remained stuck in a rut, closing at 70p on Wednesday. The carmaker's chief executive, Adrian Hallmark, said the firm was now scrambling to capitalise on the new trade window. He said: 'It comes live on the 30th June… so we're planning to invoice three months' worth of sales in a 24-hour period.' Still, Hallmark welcomed the deal, noting that British carmakers were now 'less worse off than some of (their) European and non-European competitors'. Mike Hawes, chief executive of the SMMT, acknowledged the damage inflicted by the tariff war: 'While 2025 has proved to be an incredibly challenging year for UK automotive production, there is the beginning of some optimism for the future'. He remained optimistic, pointing to the trade truce and the UK's new industrial strategy, which promises to cut energy costs for manufacturers by up to 25 per cent. Even before the tariff flare-up, Britain's carmakers were facing growing pressures. The government's zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) mandate, which compels manufacturers to hit rising EV sales targets, has triggered structural changes across the sector. Stellantis last year cited the cost of ZEV compliance in its decision to close its Luton factory and consolidate products at Ellesmere Port. Ford, meanwhile, cut 800 UK jobs as part of a broader European retrenchment. Cyril Aboujaoude, co-founder of private equity firm Tioopo Capital, said: 'This deal has the potential to mark a positive shift in the UK-US industrial trade, but its long-term value will depend on more than short-term quota relief.' He added: 'Long term visibility is essential – not just for the major auto manufacturers, but for the mid-sixed, high spec engineering firms that represent the future of UK innovation'. Audi E-Tron GT Is A Worthy Lamborghini Cousin
Audi RS e-tron Performance I've driven other vehicles from the Audi e-tron lineup in the past, and have been duly impressed with their instant torque, high-tech interiors, and precision tuning. But I'd never driven the RS e-tron GT before, and it took my breath away. Lithe, beautiful, and quick, the 2025 Audi RS e-tron GT Performance is a sleek machine. This all-electric four-door sounds and drives much differently than the Audi RS6 Avant, and while I kind of missed the RS6 Avant's throaty roar I fell hard for the quiet acceleration of the RS e-tron GT. Bottom line: while this all-electric car uses Porsche-sourced platform and powertrains, it transcends its origins. If Lamborghini were to decide to make a battery-powered sedan, I think it would feel a lot like the Audi RS e-tron GT. Audi RS e-tron Performance interior What's New For The Audi E-Tron GT For 2025? Audi updated the powertrain and added the RS Performance option, which boasts an blistering 912 horsepower. The RS still impresses at 845 hp, and the base S model is no slouch with 670 hp. The e-tron GT styling was freshened up for 2025, including elements like the grille and wheels. Of the nine exterior colors, two are new (I'm partial to the Progressive Red hue). Audi RS e-tron Performance Carbon, Carbon Everywhere Inside the RS e-tron GT Performance, the cabin can be festooned with carbon fiber from tip to tip. An $8,400 forged carbon package adds 21-inch 6-double-spoke wheels, a dark carbon roof panel, illuminated forged carbon door sill inlays, forged carbon exterior trim and mirror housings, and forged carbon interior inlays. Plus, that package comes with summer tires for optimal zip. Audi RS e-tron Performance Range, And Still Room For Cargo In This Audi E-Tron A family of four could happily enjoy this car on a lengthy road trip. When equipped with 20-inch wheels, the e-tron GT S model is good for 91 MPGe in the city and 88 MPGe on the highway. You'll have to give up 2 MPGe in the city and 3 MPGe on the highway if you opt for the 21-inch wheels. Range is more than adequate to please the majority of EV drivers; the S model can go up to 300 miles on a full charge and the RS Performance with the larger wheels loses just six miles for a total of 294. The 97.0-kWh lithium-ion battery can be recharged from 10 to 80 percent in less than 20 minutes on a fast charger. Under the power liftgate, the e-tron GT has 9 cubic feet of capacity. That's plenty for a few carry-on bags and backpacks, with room to spare for snacks. Need to store a little extra? There's another two cubic feet in the frunk, or front trunk. Audi RS e-tron Performance Audi E-Tron RS Cabin Tech Audi is known to build tech-forward cabins and infotainment systems, and this electric sedan is no exception. The 10.1-inch touchscreen is well integrated into the dash and physical controls on the steering wheel and the console make it easy to navigate. Also, I'd recommend the panoramic fixed glass roof with digital light control for the most aesthetic appeal, and extra headroom that a physical shade would inhibit. The Audi e-tron lineup continues to set the pace for the future, and the RS e-tron GT Performance is guaranteed to thrill.

Ford Forced to Idle Multiple US Plants on China Magnet Shortage
Ford Motor Co. temporarily idled factories in the US over the last three weeks due to a shortage of magnets containing rare earth minerals, key components embroiled in US trade tensions with China. Chief Executive Officer Jim Farley said the situation demonstrates the need to develop a domestic supply chain for critical auto components. China has instituted a new approval process for exports of rare earths that has slowed supply lines.
