BJP to bank on Hindutva to target Shiv Sena (UBT), MNS

Mumbai: Pushed on the backfoot due to the 'Hindi imposition' row, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is set to corner cousins Raj and Uddhav Thackeray's parties by evoking the Hindutva agenda following the recent controversy over Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) workers assaulting a sweets shop owner at Mira Road for not speaking in Marathi. Ahead of the upcoming local body polls across Maharashtra, the BJP has decided to strike a fine balance between protecting Marathi asmita (pride)—a key political plank of the Shiv Sena (UBT) and MNS—and Hindutva, by highlighting its contribution to promoting the Marathi language and safeguarding the interests of Hindi-speaking Hindus from other communities in the state.
The BJP had decided to counter the Opposition's Marathi-Hindi language politics during its core committee meeting last week. In the wake of the June 29 assault of a businessman at Mira Road by MNS workers for not speaking in Marathi, the BJP decided to use the incident to propel its pro-Hindutva stand.
On Thursday, BJP minister Nitesh Rane led the charge, terming the incident an attack on a Hindu. 'We will not tolerate our Hindu brother being attacked in the state,' he said. No stranger to controversial and provocative statements, Rane added, 'If these attackers have the guts, they should go to Mohammed Ali Road and Null Bazaar and force the cap-donning hawkers with beards to speak Marathi. Our pro-Hindutva government will not tolerate it, and strict action will be taken against the attackers.' Mohammed Ali Road and Null Bazaar are predominantly Muslim areas in Mumbai.
According to MNS leaders, the BJP made businessmen in Mira Road take to the streets to protest the assault. This is believed to be part of the BJP's strategy.
BJP insiders said the party's decision to take a stronger stand on the Mira Road incident was triggered in the backdrop of the Mahayuti government scrapping its recent order to introduce Hindi as the third language in primary schools. The BJP-led government had believably rolled back its decision after sensing anger among the Marathi-speaking population. The estranged Thackeray cousins had also announced a grand joint protest march in Mumbai on July 5 to oppose the move.
'We firmly believe that our Hindutva stand on such issues and the introduction of Hindi in school will help us largely in consolidating the non-Marathi voters under the agenda of Hindutva,' said a BJP leader. 'At the same time, we are not opposing Marathi or the Marathi manoos (people), as even that section is appealed to under the larger agenda of Hinduism. Our stand will not damage [our prospects in] the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) or even the rest of Maharashtra, but will damage the Thackerays for the attack on Hindu businessmen.'
The BJP believes this strategy will help it consolidate voters in Hindi- and Gujarati-speaking communities, which dominate some of the nine municipal corporations in MMR, the leader said. As for Mumbai, while the Marathi-speaking population is around 29%, non-Marathi-speaking people dominate the city, the leader added.
'At the same time, not all Marathi-speaking voters will side with the Thackerays even if they decide to come together in the corporation elections. Secondly, it would be difficult for the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena to join hands with Raj if these attacks continue, as Uddhav has been getting the support of Muslims of late. Muslims and north Indians may not support Uddhav Thackeray's party if the hobnobbing between the two brothers continues, as they hate Raj Thackeray for his stand taken against them over the years,' the leader said.
A senior BJP leader and member of the core committee said that the party would undertake a drive to reach out to Marathi voters and talk about its contribution to the conservation of the language. 'We will tell people that Marathi got the status of a classical language because of the central government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Modi government introduced regional languages in civil service and banking exams. And as such, there was no question of secondary treatment of the language in Maharashtra. The party will showcase how the Uddhav Thackeray-led party pushed the Marathi manoos out of Mumbai. We firmly believe that the strategy would help us even if the two Thackerays come together and, in fact, damage them more,' the leader added.

No BJP alliance ever: Ex-revenue officer who joined actor Vijay's party

In an exclusive interaction with India Today, KG Arunraj, a former Indian Revenue Service officer and now the general secretary of propaganda and policy of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), dismissed any alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and claimed that the party led by actor-politician Vijay is all set to form the next government in Tamil who took voluntary retirement to join Vijay's newly launched political outfit in June, said the TVK has never entertained the idea of aligning with the leader made it very clear in our first party conference at Vikravandi that there will be no alliance - direct or indirect - with the BJP. This has been our stand right from the beginning,' he stated, referring to recent speculation. Responding to comments by BJP leaders like Nainar Nagendran and Tamilisai Soundararajan, who suggested Vijay should align with the BJP, Arunraj dismissed them as 'unsolicited advice.' He said, 'If they really have strength in Tamil Nadu, they should grow their party organically. They claim to be the biggest party in India, then why do they need our shoulders? We are not here to let anyone climb using us. Tamil and Periyar soil will continue to shut the doors on the BJP- now and forever.'Arunraj positioned TVK as the sole force genuinely opposing the ruling DMK, calling out what he described as the Chief Minister's 'work-from-home politics.' He cited Vijay's visit to actor Ajith Kumar's home in Sivakasi to personally offer condolences, contrasting it with the CM's gesture of only calling. 'Our leader has stepped onto the ground from day one and shown he genuinely cares for the people,' he suggestions that TVK is being soft on the AIADMK in the hopes of a future alliance, Arunraj denied such motives. 'Our job is to question the party in power. Since DMK is ruling, we are questioning DMK. Our leader has made it clear—TVK is neither AIADMK nor DMK to make compromises with BJP,' he the issue of youth support, Arunraj said that the entry of Vijay into politics has energized a generation disillusioned by corruption and dynastic politics. 'Before TVK, there was apathy among youth. Today, they are our biggest strength. Vijay evoked the legacies of Periyar, Kamarajar, Velunachiyar, and Anjalai Ammal, reintroducing their ideologies to a generation that had lost touch.'Responding to Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan's remark that politics is not easy and that Vijay should be prepared for hardship, Arunraj took the comment in stride. 'We are not AIADMK, DMK or even Jana Sena. We know politics is difficult. Easy things anyone can do - difficult things are for great leaders like Vijay,' he the road ahead, Arunraj was confident that the 2026 Assembly elections would mark a turning point. 'TVK will sweep the elections. We will form the government and Vijay will be sworn in as Chief Minister. He will bring real development to Tamil Nadu,' he said.- EndsMust Watch

5L chit fund investors to get refunds in 4 months: Samal

1 2 Bhubaneswar: State govt will refund money to all eligible investors who were duped by chit fund companies, said state BJP president Manmohan Samal here on Friday. He said the BJP, in its election manifesto, promised the people of Odisha to refund money lost in chit fund scams. The govt has already refunded Rs 47 crore to 1.26 lakh chit fund depositors in a year. "A list of 5 lakh investors is ready, and they will get refunds in the next four months," he added. Samal said that due to dedicated efforts of the BJP govt, eligible beneficiaries affected by chit funds scam will get their money back. He expressed gratitude to chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi for the initiative. He said that trusting the BJD govt, people had invested their hard-earned money in various chit fund companies. "Unfortunately, the BJD govt betrayed their trust. A total of 174 chit fund companies swindled the people of Odisha. Many ministers, MPs, and MLAs from the BJD were allegedly involved in misappropriating public money under the guise of chit funds," he alleged. Samal said several BJD members and ministers were jailed in connection with the chit fund scam. "Thousands of eligible depositors, who invested in chit funds, were left in uncertainty, leading to a loss of public trust in the govt. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Gold Is Surging in 2025 — Smart Traders Are Already In IC Markets Learn More Undo Following this, the Supreme Court intervened, leading to the formation of a corpus fund and a commission, but implementation was lacking, and the investigation report was not made public due to the questionable intentions of the BJD govt," he alleged. He said the BJP govt took immediate action to refund those affected by the chit fund scam. "The BJP govt is sensitive to the plight of the affected depositors and is committed to ensuring that all eligible people get their money back," he added. Samal said a system will be put in place to ensure that depositors can get their refunds by showing minimal proof. BJD spokesperson Lenin Mohanty said Samal is suffering from selective amnesia. "Last month, he was telling that chit fund-related documents are missing. Now he is confidently telling the govt can refund money to all chit fund investors, which means the govt has all the documents. He is misleading the people," he added. Mohanty said the BJP govt recently said Rs 119 crore was refunded to 2.79 lakh chit fund investors between 2014 and 2024. "It proves the BJD govt was refunding the money of chit fund depositors. For the sake of opposing the BJD, Samal should not speak whatever he wants," he added.

Eknath Shinde Explains Why He Said 'Jai Gujarat' At Pune Event

Mumbai (Maharashtra): Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Friday said that he raised the "Jai Gujarat" slogan while addressing a gathering in Pune to pay his respects to the Gujarati community present at the program. Responding to the critiques, Mr Shinde said that those who were criticising him for raising the slogan must look within themselves. He added that the Mahayuti government has worked hard for Marathi to be granted the status of a classical language. "Today, there were 3-4 events in Pune where brothers and sisters from the Gujarati community were present; they have been living there for many years. Marathi and Gujarati people live together harmoniously, and they have built a large sports complex. I attended that event. After my speech there, I said Jai Hind, Jai Maharashtra, Jai Gujarat, because Jai Hind is the pride of our country, Jai Maharashtra - after all, we are proud of Maharashtra. And I said 'Jai Gujarat' because the Gujarati community, together, has built a sports complex there. And that is why I respected and praised them... I will only say that those who criticise us should first look within themselves. Marathi is our identity, and Hindutva is our soul. We have worked to grant Marathi the status of a classical language. There will be no compromise with the Marathi language. Before pointing fingers at others, they should look within themselves," Mr Shinde said at a press conference. Amid the ongoing political sparring between the ruling Mahayuti and the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) over the charge of imposing Hindi, Mr Shinde attacked the opposition parties, accusing them of spreading "fake narratives" regarding the Indian Constitution and the danger to reservations. "Pakistan flags were also seen in the Lok Sabha elections, so where did the Marathi love go? In the fake narrative, they said that the Constitution is also in danger, and the reservation will also end. So, they cannot win the elections with a fake narrative. On the basis of our work, we have got a huge majority in the Assembly and the upcoming local self-government institutions elections are coming up. So they want to dig up such issues and do politics on them and get votes here. But people are very intelligent, and Mahayuti will win," Mr Shinde added. This comes after Mr Shinde raised several eyebrows while concluding his speech with the "Jai Gujarat" slogan. He was speaking in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah at the inauguration ceremony of the 'Jairaj Sports and Convention Centre' built by the Shree Poona Gujarati Bandhu Samaj in Pune's Kondhwa. Earlier today, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis defended his Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde's "Jai Gujarat" remarks and said that creating a ruckus over the issue was unnecessary.
