328 arms, 9,300 rounds of ammunition seized in strife-hit Manipur

(CAPF), the Indian Army, and the Assam Rifles have recovered 328 arms and around 9,300 different types of ammunition in trouble torn Manipur.
Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Lhari Dorjee Lhatoo informed that the intelligence-based operations led to the recovery of 328 firearms, including 151 Self-Loading Rifles (SLR), 65 INSAS rifles, 73 other types of rifles, 5 carbine guns, and 2 MP-5 guns, along with other explosives and warlike stores.
He said that in the wee hours of Saturday, on the basis of specific Intelligence reports regarding the presence of a large cache of arms and ammunition stashed in different areas of five Imphal valley districts, simultaneous search operations were launched at different locations.

He said that joint teams of Manipur Police, Army, Assam Rifles, Border Security Force (BSF), the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) recovered the significant number of arms and a huge cache of ammunition and war-like stores from the outskirts of five valley districts of Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, Bishnupur, and Kakching.
The joint forces also recovered around 9,300 various types of ammunition in the most successful operations, the official said.

A Manipur Police statement said that these Intelligence-based operations mark a major achievement for the Manipur Police, the security forces, in their continued efforts to restore normalcy, maintain public order, and ensure the safety and security of citizens and their property.
The Manipur Police reiterates its commitment to a peaceful and secure Manipur, the statement said.
It said that the public is urged to cooperate with the police and security forces and report any suspicious activities or information related to illegal weapons to the nearest police station or Central Control Room.
'Senior police officials are in close coordination with all security stakeholders to ensure that such operations continue in a sustained and focussed manner to restore normalcy, maintain public order, and ensure the safety and security of citizens and their properties,' the statement said.
The recovery of 328 arms and 9,300 various types of ammunition is the first major success of the security forces in Manipur after the ethnic violence broke out in the state on May 3, 2023.
Various official reports, political parties claimed that during the ethnic riots more than 6,020 varied types of sophisticated arms and different types of ammunition were looted from the police stations and police outposts by the mobs, attackers and militants.
Till March 6, around 1,000 looted and illegally held weapons, including many sophisticated arms, and a huge cache of ammunition, have been returned to the security forces since Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla made the appeal for the first time on February 20.

Disabled man dies in Gurgaon jail before release; family alleges negligence, jail denies wrongdoing
GURGAON: A 47-year-old physically disabled man died after his health deteriorated in Gurgaon's Bhondsi jail on Friday. Lokesh Kumar , a resident of Gurgaon, was arrested by the Proclaimed Offender (PO) staff of the Gurgaon police on 24 June in connection with a cheque bounce case. According to his family, Kumar, who had an 80% disability, was on bed rest after being discharged from a local hospital just ten days before his arrest. Kumar, an insurance agent, is survived by his mother, wife, son, and daughter. On Friday, while Kumar's family waited outside Gurgaon jail for his release—after he was granted bail by a local court—an ambulance arrived at the jail gate. Police officers rushed the unconscious Kumar to a nearby civil hospital. The family attempted to check on him as he was being placed in the ambulance but received no response. They followed the ambulance to the hospital, where Kumar was admitted to the emergency ward. "He had 80% disability and was not well. The PO staff told us that Kumar had been declared a proclaimed offender as he had not appeared in court for a cheque bounce case, and they were bound to arrest him. They took him into custody from his home on 24 June, and he remained in jail until he was granted bail on Friday. After the bail order was sent to the jail, the family waited outside to take him home," Raghav said. He further claimed that the jail authorities failed to inform the family about Kumar's deteriorating health and took him to the hospital, where he was later declared dead. The family alleged that the police left Kumar at the hospital without notifying them. Kumar's paternal cousin claimed he died in police custody and demanded an inquiry. However, Naresh Goyal , superintendent of Gurgaon jail, said that Kumar was already ill and denied any negligence by the jail staff. "He had recently undergone intestinal surgery and was a heart patient. He also had polio and a swollen foot. After receiving his bail orders, we were preparing for his release when he fell ill. Without delay, the jail staff took him to the civil hospital in the jail's ambulance, but he died there," Goyal said. He added that a post-mortem was conducted on Saturday and the family was informed about Kumar's condition. "The family acknowledged his poor health and is now satisfied that there was no fault on the part of the jail staff, and that it was a natural death," Goyal concluded.

Speaking to Al Jazeera, Bilawal, who also heads the Pakistan People's Party, said that such a move could be part of a 'comprehensive dialogue' between the two countries, where terrorism is discussed as a key issue. "As part of a comprehensive dialogue with Pakistan, where terrorism is one of the issues that we discuss, I am sure Pakistan would not be opposed to any of these things," he said, when asked whether figures like Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) chief Hafiz Saeed and Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) founder Masood Azhar could be handed over as a sign of good faith. Bilawal clarified that cases currently prosecuted against these individuals were related to domestic offences, such as terror financing. He, however, blamed India's "noncompliance" for the lack of progress on cross-border terrorism charges.
