Jaffa Cake fans convinced the sweet treats taste different nowadays
Jaffa Cake enthusiasts are adamant the sweet treats don't taste like they used to. The McVities favourites, which have been around for almost a century, have come out in plenty of different varieties over the years. These include limited edition options such as raspberry, strawberry, lemon and lime, plus blackcurrant.
The classic recipe is a sponge base with a layer of orange flavoured jam topped with dark chocolate, which is an absolutely delightful combination. However, when was the last time you picked up a packet?
After not eating Jaffa Cakes for a while, foodies are convinced they taste a lot different than they remember. On Reddit, one critic said they felt "dry".
Asking other customers if they had experienced the same, they asked: 'That 'spongey' bit? It's not the same spongey bit I remember growing up. It's like drywall. Well, drywall is a bit far, but it ain't no sponge. I had three, just to make sure I wasn't going crazy, and they were all the same.'
Apparently, they weren't the only Jaffa Cake fans to feel this way. Their pals "all said the same thing" and were convinced they're 'just not the same'.
Urging others to share their thoughts, they asked the social media forum: 'Has something changed? Have false memories allowed me to remember an absolutely supreme experience whilst munching on these delights? Or have they just decided to change the whole recipe to save a few quid?'
People were quick to share their opinions – with many convinced the product has evolved over the years. One Redditor wrote: 'I used to think as you get old your taste buds change or you grew bigger but no, they f***ed with the sizes & recipes.'
Another claimed: 'Off-brand Jaffa cakes have been superior for a few years now. Aldi ones are pretty good, M&S too'.
Meanwhile, someone else complained about the size of Jaffa Cakes. They wrote: 'They used to be 12 but now 10 in a packet. They have shrunk as I can easily get one in my gob as 20 odd years ago I would struggle. So that's 10 mouthfuls for me.'
One reason people may have noticed a change is that McVities made some tweaks a few years ago. Back in 2022, Jaffa Cakes were reduced from 5.5cm to 5cm across.
That wasn't all either – as the orange filling was retracted from 4cm to just 3cm. That's bound to have impacted the eating experience for some!

Pregnant lady offered train seat by kind commuter is gobsmacked by what follows
One commuter kindly gave up their seat for a pregnant woman - but chaos ensued. Any good-hearted citizen would give up their seat for a visibly pregnant person, and lots of public transport vehicles also have priority seats for those who need them. However, despite these policies, there are still times when things can spiral into chaos. A commuter recently offered their seat to a pregnant lady on a train in London and was horrified by what happened next. The Reddit user recalled how they'd stood up for a pregnant woman got on the London Underground, only for a man to get in the way and "steal" the seat instead, reported The Mirror. They said: 'This morning [I] was heading into London on the Jubilee line from Stanmore. After a few stops I saw a pregnant woman get on and the people in the priority seats just ignored her so I offered her mine. 'As soon as I stood up a man pushed her away and took the seat I had just vacated. It was bad enough seeing people not give up priority seats but then to see that and he just sat there obstinately as I told him it was for a pregnant woman. ' The kind commuter decided to look up the man's workplace as he was wearing a work top. Ironically, they discovered that the man is employed by a company that 'makes products to help people with mobility and health issues". The Reddit rant has garnered more than 600 comments, including from the pregnant woman the post is referring to and her husband. She remarked: 'Firstly, to the kind man who offered your seat, thank you so much for doing the right thing and I think we were both gobsmacked by this other man's behaviour.' She then gave some more information about what happened: 'To clarify the situation, I got on the tube this morning and since I am 8 months pregnant I usually ask for a seat if someone isn't offering it, since I know people can be in their own world or on their phones. 'However, this morning, I didn't have to as this kind man stood up and then this other 2 meter tall, well built man pushed in front of me to grab the seat. 'I said 'excuse me, I think this seat was meant for me' and the kind man said the same thing. He just looked us both in the eye, didn't say anything but remained seated. 'The kind man said 'I can't believe you just took a pregnant woman's seat' but nothing from him, he shortly after pretended to sleep, probably not to face the looks of the rest of the carriage.' The woman added that luckily, she was then offered a priority seat by another commuter but she 'didn't want to kick up more of a fuss'. She worried about what the man who took the seat could do next. She concluded her comment: 'I would have understood if he also had a disability but he had clearly been capable to stand until that point, didn't wear a badge or say anything in his defence. 'I think he was just lazy and rude. My main thought was: I wonder what his mum would have said if she saw his behaviour…' Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! People furious as McDonald's implements 30 minute rule in certain restaurants
McDonald's is a global fast food chain loved by adults and children – but it has changed a lot over the years. One customer shared that some restaurants have a '30 minute rule' when eating in People are furious as McDonald's appears to have implemented a 30 minute rule in some of its restaurants. The fast food giant is recognised across the world for its burgers, fries, Chicken McNuggets and other items. It has restaurants globally and the first one opened in the UK in Woolwich, south London in 1974. Many people have fond memories of celebrating their birthday at McDonald's when they were children. The PlayPlace was a popular feature of the franchise, particularly in the 1980s and 1990s. McDonald's was known as a warm, inviting place to go for a casual sit-down meal with family and friends. But customers believe this has changed, with drive-thrus becoming more regularly used. A user on Reddit shared their shock as they posted a photo inside a McDonald's restaurant with a sign that states: 'Please - no loitering. Time limit: 30 minutes while consuming food.' The angry customer said: '2nd McDonald's I've been to like this in less than a week... Only 5 tables in the restaurant, no self serve drink machine, no condiments out, not even [a] napkin dispenser... What happened to McDonald's being a family friendly restaurant for kids to play at like in the 90s?' The user didn't specify which McDonald's restaurant they spotted this sign at but others in the comment section shared that they have seen similar ones. McDonald's has confirmed that the '30 minute rule' is not a UK policy so the post is likely to be referring to US locations. Someone shared: 'Surprised to see people constantly posting this sign like it's new. It was up at my local McDonald's way back in early 2010s.' Another user replied: 'That's what I was about to say, these signs have been around for a very long time.' The sign with the '30 minute rule' seems to have angered some other customers in the comment section. One remarked: 'Greed got in the way. They want the customers then don't want to serve them. 'Keep killing refills and making dining rooms uncomfortable and you won't have to worry about sitting down any more. 'The remodeled one by me used to be bustling, now there's no menu board, no cashier , no refills , cash kiosks, no TV and the most uncomfortable seating ever. No one eats inside any longer.' A second user sarcastically commented: 'I respect that they don't want me inside there eating. I respect it so much that I just don't go there any more!' A third chimed in: 'Rising costs and a changed culture fueled this change. It's not just McDonald's. 'There are no more real family friendly fast food restaurants left. It's all just get your food [and] get out now.' However, some people understood why the restaurant might have put up this sign. A user guessed: 'That no loitering sign is probably just posted to allow staff to kick out people who stay there all day or something. 'I've loitered for 2 hours in a McDonalds that has that sign working on my laptop while sipping coffee and they didn't care.' A former McDonald's employee added: 'Probably also a way to kick out teenagers who come in and buy 1 cheeseburger between 10 of them and then torment the workers. [It] was a huge issue back when I worked there.'

I tolerated my neighbour's massive tree blocking my sunlight but now it's growing INTO my house & it's home to rats too
A FRUSTRATED homeowner has revealed that his neighbour's massive tree is blocking all of his sunlight. Not only this, but the man's anger has continued to grow, as now the large tree has begun growing into his home. And if you thought that was bad enough, think again, as this anonymous man even claimed that the tree is also home to rats too. Posting on social media, the man uploaded a snap of his neighbour 's overgrown tree, which is towering onto his roof and is extremely close to his window, leaving many open-mouthed. Writing on the r/GardeningUK thread on Reddit, alongside the post, the user, who shares content under the username @Jacktheforkie, explained: 'Neighbours got a massive tree growing directly against my house.' Not only this, but he claimed: 'It's blocking my sunlight and the rest of her jungle is host to a fair amount of rats. 'The rats are digging under and jumping over from the weeds.' And it's not just rats that have emerged, as the man later recognised: 'I certainly get birds, and the grey furry birds with long pink tails.' Unsure on how to proceed and desperate for advice, he then penned: 'She doesn't want to deal with the mess. 'I never see the neighbour, she used to take pride in the garden but now it's a jungle that requires periodic attack with power tools to fight the weeds back. 'What can I do about it?' Reddit users were left stunned by the man's post and eagerly raced to the comments to share their thoughts. The moment furious neighbour yells 'If I die, you're for it' at student in bitter parking space row One person advised: 'You can complain to the council but I would speak to the neighbour first and offer to pay towards the cost of removal. 'Where I am, the expectation is that neighbours go 50/50 on this kind of work but it's a social convention rather than a legal one.' Another recommended: 'This is an ash tree. They get huge and aren't suitable for right next to houses. It's probably self-seeded and nobody noticed until it suddenly was too big. The Top Five Reasons Neighbours Squabble One study by Compare the Market revealed the top reason British neighbour's argue Broken fences - top of the board was broken fences and whose responsibility it was to fix it Parking: one of the leading drivers of neighbour disputes, with 54.1 per cent of people having issues with people parking in front of their house, parking bay or driveway Trees - complaints about a neighbour's tree cracking your garden path was also common with nearly half of participants finding it frustrating Bin wars - outdoor bin etiquette continues to ignite the most furious debates between neighbours Nosy Neighbours - some people have their eyes and ears at the ready to have a peek causing problems for others 'You need to talk to your neighbours about cutting it back - ideally taking it down altogether because the root system will also be large. 'If your neighbours won't play ball or don't have the money you are entitled to cut off anything that overhangs your property. 'Monitor your foundations. First sign of cracks or movement in your house it's a job for your insurance.' Meanwhile, a third stressed: 'Write them a polite letter, attach them that picture, see what they do. Decency starts with a polite approach.' Whilst someone else said: 'Call the council about the rats and report it as a health hazard. The rats are living off something... So who knows what state the garden is behind the foliage.' The man later responded to the comments and wrote: 'My mum asked and she said she likes it that way, but we are pretty sure she said that because she doesn't want to deal with it.'
