Investigators unsure if remains from fiery crash belong to missing South Korean family

CNN26-03-2025
Summary
Officials are working to identify additional human remains from a fatal pileup crash on Interstate 40 in Arizona.
The remains could belong to three South Korean tourists who have been missing since March 13.
GPS data from the family's rental car coincides with the location and time of the crash.
The accident involved 22 vehicles and 36 drivers and occupants, according to the Arizona DPS.
Only small portions of human remains have been recovered, complicating the identification process. Arizona officials are working to determine whether additional human remains discovered in the debris of a fatal pileup crash on Interstate 40 on March 13 are those of the South Korean family who went missing in the area at the time of the crash.
Jiyeon Lee, Taehee Kim and Junghee Kim have been missing for nearly two weeks after driving through a winter storm on their road trip between the Grand Canyon and Las Vegas.
Investigators have confirmed that one of the vehicles in the collision, which involved multiple passenger vehicles that 'were rear-ended, pushing them into, and in some cases, underneath crashed tractor-trailers,' was a BMW SUV, an update from the Coconino County Sheriff's Office said on Monday. The family had been traveling in a BMW rental vehicle, the sheriff's office said.
The vehicle's GPS data showed the rental car was last on Interstate 40 westbound around 3:27 p.m., coinciding with the fatal pileup accident on the same interstate during a winter storm, according to a release from the Arizona Department of Public Safety.
The crash happened around 3:27 p.m. on westbound Interstate 40 near milepost 159.5 in Williams, Arizona, on a snow and ice-covered interstate. Some of the vehicles involved in the crash burned for more than 20 hours at 'extreme temperatures, resulting in extensive destruction,' DPS told CNN Saturday.
Initially, Arizona DPS reported that the accident involved 22 vehicles and 36 drivers and occupants, resulting in at least two fatalities and injuring 16 people. Over the weekend, highway patrol investigators announced they had discovered additional human remains.
The intensity and prolonged duration of the fire 'have posed significant challenges for identification efforts,' the sheriff's office noted on Monday, requiring 'meticulous examination' in the process of identifying the of additional remains found.
Bart Graves with Arizona DPS told CNN on Wednesday, that only 'small portions of human remains' had been located. 'Of these portions, we cannot even determine at this point in time if those remains are from the same body or different bodies,' he said.
'The Yavapai County Medical Examiner's Office is diligently working to ascertain whether identification is possible,' the sheriff's office said. 'We understand the urgency and the emotional toll this uncertainty places on the families and the public. We kindly ask for patience and understanding as our teams continue to work with care and precision to bring clarity to this heartbreaking situation.'
'At this point in time, though, we do not expect any updates in the near future as the analysis takes time,' Graves added.
The Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Los Angeles told CNN it would provide 'full support if the investigative authorities request cooperation regarding this matter.'

Special counsel summons South Korean ex-President Yoon for questioning

SEOUL, July 21 (UPI) -- A South Korean special counsel team investigating allegations against former First Lady Kim Keon Hee said Monday that it has also summoned former President Yoon Suk Yeol for questioning over election meddling charges. Special prosecutor Min Joong-ki's office sent a request to the Seoul Detention Center, where Yoon is currently being held, to appear for questioning on Jul. 29, assistant special prosecutor Moon Hong-ju said at a press briefing. "The special prosecutor sent a request for investigation cooperation regarding former President Yoon to the head of the Seoul Detention Center this morning, requesting that he appear as a suspect at 10 a.m. on July 29," Moon said. Moon added that the office also mailed a summons to Kim Keon Hee's residence to request her appearance on Aug. 6. Kim is being investigated on a range of allegations including stock price manipulation, accepting luxury goods in exchange for political favors and meddling in election nominations. Yoon faces questioning over the election meddling charges, which involve power broker Myung Tae-kyun, the special consul's office said. The former presidential couple are suspected of influencing candidate nominations for Yoon's People Power Party in local and parliamentary elections. The summons for Yoon comes as he awaits a separate trial over his short-lived Dec. 3 declaration of martial law. Yoon's decree was quickly overturned by the National Assembly and led to his impeachment and eventual removal from office. The former president was arrested on Jul. 10 over concerns he may destroy evidence ahead of the trial, marking Yoon's second time in custody. In January, after a weeks-long standoff using his presidential security detail, Yoon was arrested on insurrection charges. He was later released in March on procedural grounds. Special prosecutors indicted Yoon on additional charges on Saturday, including an allegation that he abused power by not holding a required meeting with all cabinet members before declaring martial law. He is also accused of creating a false document claiming the full cabinet endorsed the martial law decree and later destroying it. The insurrection charges Yoon faces are punishable by life imprisonment or the death penalty. Copyright 2025 UPI News Corporation. All Rights Reserved.

‘I'd Call the Police:' Woman Stops at Stoplight. Then She Notices Something Unusual About the BMW Trunk in Front of Her

A driver's morbid curiosity was triggered by the sight of an external latch affixed to the trunk of a car. In front of him, was a what appeared to be BMW 3 Series. The driver, who posts under the handle @blueb3rrysony, uploaded footage of the vehicle. Some thought there was a mundane explanation as to why the car was outfitted with such a setup. Others were alarmed. Theories ranged from human trafficking to the driver being rear-ended and not having the time or money to fix the damage. The video begins with a recording of a black sedan sitting in traffic at a red light. She zooms in to reveal a metal latch screwed to the car's trunk. A small, copper-tinted padlock is looped through the latch, making the setup look like something out of a horror movie. 'Saw this trunk locked and I just couldn't help but wonder why,' @blueb3rrysony writes in a text overlay of her clip. Her post has 446,000 views as of this writing. A DIY Fix or a Nefarious Plot? Plenty of people who saw the post surmised that it was simply a quick fix for a busted lock. 'They might be keeping it from coming open,' one said. Another opined, 'Kidnappers probably wouldn't put [a] suspicious lock on a container that already has an inconspicuous lock. Their trunk's latch is probably just busted.' Then a Sign Falls On Her Car 'It could be an old car and the thing is broken. If it's not that then it is very suspicious for that to be there,' a third said. Someone else noticed a key detail about the car: a missing back bumper. 'Guessing on how the rear bumper is missing it got into an accident. So the latch doesn't align with the lock so they added that to lock it,' they wrote. At least one person was concerned. 'I'd call the police,' they wrote. One of the people who replied to @blueb3rrysony's video speculated the jerry-rigged latch had more to do with finances than kidnapping. 'Not everyone can afford to replace the actual car trunk lock…sometimes people need to improvise not everyone has money,' they said.
