Michigan State football's options for class of 2026 running backs are dwindling down day-by-day, and head coach Jonathan Smith has yet to land one.

In hopes of a three-star announcing a Spartan commitment on Monday, June 23, Smith's June luck unfortunately ran out.

Three-star running back Jamal Rule announced his verbal commitment to Nebraska on Monday evening. He is the No. 779 overall recruit, No 48 running back, and No. 33 student-athlete out of North Carolina, according to 247Sports Composite.
The Spartans were late to extend an offer, especially when up against the Cornhuskers who were on top of Rule since Jan. 4.
As the time neared for him to make his decision, Nebraska was already favored to land the rising senior with Michigan State taking second place in the race.
So where does this leave Smith and his class of 2026?

As it's unfolding, he'll likely have to navigate a class without a running back. Rule was the last recruit the Spartans had a real shot at, and unless things turn around dramatically for one of the remaining running backs MSU offered, things aren't looking bright for Smith.
Four-star Brian Bonner, three-star Kyshawn Robinson, and three-star Ashton Rowden are the last three recruits that haven't committed. However, none of the running backs have Michigan State listed as one of their finalists.
Unsurprisingly, Bonner's decision will be between more competitive schools compared to the Spartans. Right now, his top five include Penn State, Nebraska, UCLA, Washington, and Notre Dame. Robinson has yet to decide his group of finalists, but MSU is not high up on his 247Sports interests list. Rowden has a top four of Houston, Minnesota, Texas Tech, and TCU.
It's a bump in the road considering how successful the month was for the Spartans in terms of recruitment. They recently picked up Tyren Wortham to complete a wide receiver duo in the batch. Without a running back, though, Smith might be forced to navigate flipping commitments and the transfer portal in the future.

Getting A Start On Celebrating The Rangers 100th Anniversary

You can't see it or hear about it just yet, but inside Madison Square Garden, the Rangers organization is busy planning for the club's gala 100th anniversary. At this very time a century ago the Garden -- that is the third Garden, not this one – was a year old and already had an NHL team, the New York Americans. Now, a century ago, Conn Smythe was given the job of building a Rangers roster. Now, you Blueshirt fans can get a jump on the MSG marketeers and learn all about the Original 1926-27 Blueshirts, their unusual creation, and the arresting characters that enabled New York to have its first Stanley Cup only a season (1927-28) later. The way to do so is get your hands on a copy of "The Last Original Ranger," a novel by Bryan Reilly. I've read it twice; and my buddy Bernie Rhode just finished his. Together, we are RAVING about it. While "The Last Original Ranger" is called "fiction," it is, but it also isn't. Author Reilly weaves his tale around Murray Murdoch, who made the Blueshirt varsity in 1926 along with the more famous Frank Boucher and the brothers Cook, Bill and Bun. With uncanny historic accuracy, Reilly captures the essence of training camp right into the regular season with both major and minor characters from that era exquisitely portrayed. (One such character really fooled The Maven.) There's also a keen mystery plot which Reilly cleverly disguised and which will be a challenge for any Rangers historian to unravel. J.T. Miller Has To Put Spirit Back Into The Blueshirts Not long after the Rangers packed their gear and went golfing, snorkeling or whatever elsehey do with their petty cash, Joe Micheletti said something not so petty about the team he'd left as an MSG Networks analyst. The beauty part is that Brother O'Reilly can write which makes the whole package a must read. Bottom Line: Reading "The Last Original Ranger," you'll get the feel that this 1926-27 team played only last night and you're reading about them in today's papers. Get a hold of this gem and you can boast that you're the first Ranger fan on your block to start celebrating the your team's 100th anniversary. (P.S. Check my other sidebar today for Bryan Reilly's assessment of the current Rangers. The man may be a novelist, but you'll find that he's also a realist.)

Iowa football safety reveals reason he didn't transfer from program

The college football transfer portal has run rampant in the sport for the past couple of years. It's affected every college football program in the country, including Iowa, who has seen talented players come and go over the past few years. But, not every player is like that. Some players still have a lot of love and respect for the Hawkeyes' approach and track record of development. These are players who stick around despite not playing much early in their tenure with the program, but who then get rewarded for their patience. Koen Entringer is one of those guys. The 6-foot-1, 211-pound junior safety out of Ypsilanti, Mich., has appeared in 30 games as a Hawkeye, with only one start to his name. Entringer has recorded 27 tackles and an interception across those 30 games. The Michigan product is very talented and could've easily left early in his career to go somewhere for more playing time. But, Entringer stuck it out and was able to represent Iowa at Big Ten media days in Las Vegas on Thursday. Entringer spoke about his decision to stay at Iowa, even when the playing time wasn't there. "I think the main reason I didn't leave is just because I'm committed to the team and I'm committed to the players. I knew that Quinn (Schulte) coming back was going to help the team and if I was good enough to beat him out, I would've beat him out. Coach (Phil) Parker is a fair guy and he found a way for me to be on the field. "I know it's not common for a lot of guys. They want to play right away. But, I just looked at it in the long term. Playing at Iowa is just a tremendous opportunity," Entringer said. Entringer's comments say a lot about him as a player and as a person, and speak to Iowa's overall approach. Guys like Jay Higgins, Luke Lachey, and Sebastian Castro are good examples of sticking around the program, even when playing time isn't there early, and being rewarded for it. Entringer is hoping his name can be added to that list of successes, as he's projected to start at safety in 2025. Fans will get their first glimpse at Entringer and the Hawkeyes when Iowa hosts Albany in the season opener on Aug. 30.
