CM Mann says 200 more Aam Aadmi Clinics to be opened across Punjab
Chandigarh, Aug 3 (PTI) Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Sunday said his government will open 200 new Aam Aadmi Clinics in the state, taking the total number of such healthcare centres to 1,081.
Earlier, Mann launched a WhatsApp chatbot for the clinics.
'It is a historic day in the healthcare sector of Punjab as a total of 881 Aam Aadmi Clinics across the state have been connected to a WhatsApp chatbot," said Mann.
These clinics cater to nearly 70,000 patients daily, and in today's digital age, the chatbot will be most beneficial for patients, said Mann.
Mann said the initiative is expected to bring revolutionary changes in healthcare services as approximately 90 per cent of Punjabis own a smartphone, and they can now be directly reached through WhatsApp.
'Patients will receive complete health-related information via WhatsApp, and doctors' prescription slips will be accessible through the chatbot," said Mann.
Diagnostic test reports will also be shared, and patients will receive reminders about their next consultation dates from the doctor, he said.
The chief minister said the health department will also maintain a digital database of patients, their ailments, and treatments.
'Punjab will soon be launching 200 more Aam Aadmi Clinics to ensure quality healthcare services for all," he said, adding that the state government is committed to providing free medical treatment to every citizen.
Punjab is also the first state in the country to implement the 'Mukhya Mantri Sehat Yojana', which provides medical treatment of up to Rs 10 lakh per family, he further said.
Targeting the previous governments, Mann said in the poll manifestos, there was no mention of the health sector, due to which people were left to fend for themselves.
He said the situation had deteriorated to the point where patients suffering from serious illnesses in villages did not even want to seek treatment because the high cost made them hesitant to push their families into debt.
It is the duty of governments to provide quality health services free of cost, and they are fulfilling this responsibility with dedication, said Mann.
Stating that the Punjab government is making significant efforts to turn the state into a medical hub, he informed that approval has been given for the establishment of four new medical colleges in Kapurthala, Hoshiarpur, Sangrur, and Nawanshahr.
He claimed that due to several 'pro-people' decisions, the people's trust in government institutions is increasing.
Many children have shifted from private schools to the 'Schools of Eminence', he said, adding that this year, 208 students from government schools have cleared the prestigious JEE Advanced exam, and over 800 students have successfully passed the NEET exam.
Calling the Road Safety Force (RSF) a life-saving force, Mann said hundreds of lives have been saved since its inception.
He said when he was a member of Parliament, data indicated that more than 5,000 lives were lost annually in road accidents in Punjab.
The formation of the RSF has led to a 48 per cent reduction in such deaths, setting an example for other states as well, he said, adding that the force consists of specially recruited and trained personnel, including women, and is equipped with 144 modern vehicles. PTI CHS RHL

All Ayush medicines now to be brought under FDA: Karnataka Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao
BENGALURU: Karnataka Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao said on Monday that all medicines under the Department of Ayush, including those in Ayurvedic, Unani, Siddha, and Homeopathy streams, will now be brought under the drugs control wing of the Food Safety and Drug Administration (FDA). Addressing reporters here, he said this is specifically to improve the quality of traditional medicines. He said the Health Department has reduced the time it took to recall substandard medicines from the market. Earlier, once a drug was flagged as Not of Standard Quality (NSQ), it could take up to 30 days to take it back from pharmacies and distributors. Now, that time has been cut to just two days. Rao said this is crucial because such medicines, if left on shelves, may continue to be taken by patients, posing serious health risks. In June alone, drugs worth Rs 40.48 lakh that did not meet the safety standards were recalled and seized across the state. The department noted that in July, 1,433 drug samples were analysed by laboratories in Bengaluru, Hubballi and Ballari. Of them, 67 were found to be substandard with the department filing 29 cases. A special enforcement drive was held on June 24 and 25, during which 279 inspections were conducted at drug stores across the state. During the drive, 231 show cause notices were issued to offending establishments. In all, 15 compliance notices were served, Rao said. On digitisation of services, the minister said all applications related to blood centres are now processed through the Online National Drugs Licensing System (ONDLS) portal, with licenses issued exclusively online. In addition, an online platform has been launched to issue Recognised Medical Institution (RMI) certificates required by institutions authorised to handle essential narcotic drugs. Food samples In July, 1,557 street food vendors were inspected. Items such as fruits, vegetables, water bottles, bakery products and spice powders were checked. Of them, 406 violated safety norms. Spot fines amounting to Rs 44,500 were collected from the violators. At 186 bus stations across the state, 889 food stalls were inspected. Of them, 206 violated safety norms. Rao said as part of the drive, the department collected six samples of kebab from Empire Restaurant and all contained banned colours, including Sunset Yellow. He said the restaurant is now serving kebabs without colours. The minister also urged people to seek good quality food and report cases where they find eateries serving artificially coloured food items.

Emphasis on public health, not revenue: Andhra CM on new bar policy
VIJAYAWADA: Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has announced the new bar policy of Andhra Pradesh, effective from September 1, emphasising public health over revenue generation. The policy, based on the recommendations of the Cabinet sub-committee, aims to promote responsible alcohol consumption, and protect the well-being of citizens, particularly the economically disadvantaged. During a review meeting at the State Secretariat with Ministers Kollu Ravindra (Excise) and Kondapalli Srinivas (MSME), and Excise officials on Monday, Naidu stressed that the new policy prioritises public health. 'The liquor policy is not just about revenue. We must focus on safeguarding people's health, and ensuring that poor households are not devastated by alcohol,' he asserted. Naidu highlighted that low-alcohol content beverages could reduce health risks for consumers, and mitigate the harm caused by substandard liquor, which affected lakhs of families during the previous regime. Now, the State has 840 bars, and bar licences will be allotted through a lottery system under the new policy. Licence fee is set based on population. The fee is Rs 35 lakh for areas with a population below 50,000, Rs 55 lakh for up to 5 lakh, and Rs 75 lakh above 5 lakh. The policy is expected to generate Rs 700 crore revenue through applications, and licence fee, with a mandatory requirement of at least four applications per bar.

Delhi plans to launch over 100 Ayushman Arogya Mandirs
New Delhi: The Delhi government has plans to establish over 100 Urban Ayushman Arogya Mandirs (UAAMs) between August and September 2025, officials said on Monday. According to officials, a total of 108 sites have been identified as feasible for setting up these clinics across various civic agencies. 'Of these, 53 sites fall under the Public Works Department (PWD), 38 under the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), eight under the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC), and nine are located on properties managed by the Directorate of Education (DoE),' a government document said. Several existing Aam Aadmi Mohalla Clinics (AAMCs) will be repurposed into UAAMs, and renovation work, including painting, plastering, waterproofing, tile work and installation of false ceilings, is underway by PWD. 'Tenders have already been floated for repair and maintenance works. Besides upgrading current facilities, new clinics will also be constructed to meet the expansion targets,' government officials said However, in some places, the project is facing delays due to pending No Objection Certificates (NOCs) from various agencies. As per the government document, the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) has approved only 11 out of 109 proposed sites, while all 39 sites proposed under the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) are still under review. Additional approvals from MCD are also awaited for more than 400 sites identified earlier this year. The expansion aligns with a health agreement signed in April 2025 between the Delhi Department of Health and Family Welfare and the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, enabling the rollout of the Ayushman Bharat scheme in the capital. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has said that Rs 1,749 crore has been allocated for the establishment of 1,139 Urban Ayushman Arogya Mandirs.(PTI)
