LAURA CRAIK's fashion verdict: Naomi Campbell channels Elvis Presley as supermodel hits Chanel's Haute Couture show in Paris with striking quiff

Daily Mail3 days ago
It was far too hot for blue suede shoes yesterday, but Naomi Campbell found another way to channel Elvis Presley, courtesy of a dramatic pompadour hairstyle unveiled at Chanel 's Haute Couture show in Paris.
It was a striking look for the Streatham-born supermodel, 55, adding extra inches to her 5ft 10in and lending a retro feel to her Chanel tweed jacket and boot-cut trousers.
It would no doubt find favour with Dolly Parton, who once quipped: 'The higher the hair, the closer to God.' In which case, Campbell must be seated at the right hand of the Father.
At the Chanel show, however, she was seated at the right hand of Charlotte Casiraghi, 38, daughter of Princess Caroline of Monaco.
Chanel always attracts a high-wattage front row, and this season is no exception.
Actresses Penelope Cruz, 51, Marion Cotillard, 49, and Kirsten Dunst, 43, were joined by the face of Coco Mademoiselle perfume Keira Knightley, 40, who looked summer-ready in a long, tiered black and white maxi dress from Chanel's ready-to-wear autumn/winter 2025 collection.
Looking far fresher than they ought to, given their recent performances at Glastonbury, were singers Lorde and Gracie Abrams – Lorde, 28, wearing a scoop-neck black boucle dress, and Abrams, 25, in a strappy white mini dress featuring a ruffled skirt.
They were joined by ambassador of the house, director Sofia Coppola, 54, and her daughters, Romy, 18, and Cosima, 15.
Chanel fan Dame Anna Wintour, 75, was on hand to watch the show, her trademark bob looking noticeably lighter.
They say blondes have more fun, and with her recent announcement that she's stepping down from some of her duties at Vogue, perhaps fun is more front of mind than usual.
Held at the Grand Palais, the collection had an ethereal feel, thanks to a surfeit of white, a preponderance of feathers and a proliferation of light, delicate fabrics such as chiffon and lace.
Classic wool boucle suits had unfinished hems for a feathered effect, with skirts that fell to the knee or ankle.
Colours were mainly monochrome, bar burgundy or gold accents.
This is the final collection by Chanel's in-house design team, with incoming designer Matthieu Blazy due to unveil his first collection in October.
When his much-anticipated debut is revealed, Naomi won't be the only guest to look all shook up.

Salome review – a frankly astonishing concert performance

Antonio Pappano never conducted Salome while he was music director at Covent Garden, but he has now turned to Strauss's opera for the final concerts of his opening season with the London Symphony Orchestra, assembling, in the process, one of the finest casts you could ever hope to hear in the work, and presenting us with an interpretation at once decadent, beautiful, engulfing, and frankly little short of astonishing. Gabriel Fauré once dubbed the score a 'symphonic poem with voices added', which is not an entirely accurate description, given the power and psychological insight of Strauss's vocal writing, but does emphasise the centrality of the orchestra's role in carrying the dramatic and emotional intensity. With the LSO on tremendous form, Pappano lets the music unfurl in a single unbroken arc of gathering tension from the slithery, lubricious clarinet solo with which it opens to the savagery of the ending, and every flicker of detail and colour in Strauss's orchestration hits home. Strings sound palpably sensual, woodwind by turns exquisite and edgy, the brass associated with Jochanaan infinitely noble as it intrudes on the prevailing mood of feverish eroticism. The overall effect is of great beauty slowly turning monstrous, obscene, and rotten with decay. It's sung with remarkable and consistent lyricism, avoiding the expressionistic-sprechstimme approach we sometimes find, and all the more powerful for it. The concerts finally allow us to hear Asmik Grigorian in the title role, a career-making assumption when she first sang it in Salzburg in 2018, but which she has not performed in the UK until now. The mixture of metal and silk in her tone allows her to soar comfortably and rapturously above Strauss's orchestra both in her declarations of love to Michael Volle's Jochanaan and in voicing the torrential emotions of the final scene. Elsewhere, the darkness in her lower registers conveys nerve-ridden ennui, steely determination and imperious selfishness. She is utterly compelling throughout. Volle, meanwhile, superbly captures the fanaticism that lurks behind Jochanaan's principled dignity, is magnificent in his evocation of Christ preaching to his disciples on Lake Galilee, and ferocious as he heaps curses on Salome. Wolfgang Ablinger-Sperrhacke makes a suitably neurotic Herod: vapid, weak-willed, lethally dangerous, barely maintaining the veneer of elegance he tries to preserve before his dinner guests. His Herodias is Violeta Urmana, fierce in her scorn and well nigh brutal in her irony. John Findon sounds ardent, even heroic as Narraboth, his voice bigger than many we usually hear in the role, while Niamh O'Sullivan is eloquent and deeply touching as the Page. An outstanding, overpowering achievement, every second of it, and one of the greatest performances of Salome I've ever heard. At the Barbican, London, on 13 July

Watch: Johnson downs champagne and sings karaoke in Capri nightclub

Boris Johnson downed champagne straight from the bottle, waved Union Jack flags and burst into song while dancing on a table at a nightclub in Capri. The exuberant display at the popular Taverna Anema e Core club was captured on video and in photographs posted on social media, as the former prime minister also donned a sombrero to cheers from the crowd of revellers. Mr Johnson was at the party hotspot with his wife Carrie and their two-month-old baby, Poppy. The family toured Capri's pebbled beaches and mixed with the crowds of summer tourists strolling the quaint streets lined with designer stores, before spending a day on the mainland touring the ancient ruins of Pompeii with the children, it is understood. 'It is great for Capri to see someone like Boris Johnson relaxed on holiday and expressing himself with so much passion,' said a former local politician who did not want to be named. 'It is great for the island's image.' The couple were spotted at the Gran Caffe in the island's main piazza, before heading to the nightclub around midnight and singing and dancing until 1.30am on Friday. Mr Johnson, dressed in a brown T-shirt and shorts, was handed a bottle of Dom Perignon champagne emblazoned with a picture of his face. Local reports suggested that staff had printed copies of Mr Johnson's parliamentary portrait onto the bottle of champagne and the band played the national anthem in his honour. After swigging his champagne, Mr Johnson was apparently so taken by the music that he jumped up on stage to join the band in a string of hits, including 'Stand by me', 'Hey Jude', ' Mamma Mia' and 'Sweet Caroline.' He was also spotted waving the Union Jack. During his late-night partying, Mr Johnson also put a sombrero on his head and waved a Mexican flag. His wife, meanwhile held their baby to her chest in a sling. The pair appeared in good spirits, laughing and joking and sharing a kiss, in footage posted on social media. Mr Johnson was featured on the nightclub's official Instagram page, posing with the owner, Gianluigi Lembo, while holding a Union Jack which had his face on it. The Anema e Core, which means heart and soul in Neopolitan, describes itself as 'la dolce vita' of Capri and has a reputation for late-night partying and rowdy music. Gianluigi took over the taverna from his late father, Guido, and the band continues to play a mix of traditional Neopolitan numbers and modern hits. It has attracted scores of VIPs and Hollywood A-listers over the years. Jennifer Lopez took the microphone and gave a spontaneous live performance there last year. Actors Leonardo Di Caprio, Matthew McConaughey, and Reese Witherspoon have also spent nights in the taverna while on the island.

ANNE-MARIE has opened up about her struggle with postnatal depression in a raw and candid Instagram post. The Ciao Adios hitmaker, 34, welcomed her second child with rapper Slowthai, 30, in May this year. 6 The singer, who gave birth to her first child, a daughter, in February last year, shared a series of selfies with fans. In the cover photo, she rocks a choppy blonde bob and has her eyes closed. In the second snap, she laughed as she faced the camera - her eyes still closed. She also shared a full-body photo where she wore a pretty frilly playsuit and a cherry pendant necklace. "This is the most 'me' I've felt in a long time. My head has been all over the place. I've been pregnant and breastfeeding for over 2 years," she wrote in the caption. "My hormones are mental and I've only just started feeling okay. I've been through a lot. "My body has been through a lot. It's so hard but I guess cliche to say IT IS worth it. "For someone who doesn't like routines I've had to become the person who lives in one. With naps and feeding and meal times. "But I'm through it, still going through it but I feel I've come out of the hole. "I battled with postnatal depression and postnatal anxiety, and therapy (yet again) and the people around me pulled me through it. "Now I'm back. I'm strong and I'm excited. My blond hair is back. My body is kinda back. I just have to stop eating chocolate now and saying 'the baby wants it' hahahaha damn." Anne-Marie teased a return to performing too, now she's back on her feet. She continued: "Anyway, this caption is too long but just wanted to let you know. My mind is finally seeing clear again. Yay. "I have 2 beautiful babies. Now it's time to tour again hahaha. Okay maybe not yet but soon." Fans flocked to the comment section to share their support and admiration for Anne-Marie. "Our superwoman," one wrote. "Beautiful inside and out mumma!!" said a second. "Love you extraordinary human x," echoed a third. To mark the arrival of her second child, Anne-Marie shared a series of pictures on Instagram. She wrote: "Another beautiful little thing has entered our lives. Hello everyone." In February last year she broke the news about her first child with a video of her singing along to her song Don't Panic. What is postnatal depression? Postnatal depression is a type of depression that affects parents after they have a baby. The major depression is triggered by childbirth but is much more severe than just the "baby blues". It can also occur following a miscarriage or stillbirth of a baby. Many women can feel emotional and anxious after the birth of their child, commonly referred to as the 'baby blues', this will only last for a few weeks after giving birth. If these symptoms start to last longer the NHS advises that you could be suffering with postnatal depression. The symptoms include but are not limited to: a persistent feeling of sadness, lack of enjoyment and loss of interest in the outside world, as well as your baby, and a lack of energy. These signs can build up gradually so a lot of people don't immediately identify that they have postnatal depression. A number of celebrity mums have opened up about suffering from postnatal depression following giving birth. Singer Adele has said that after the birth of her son Angelo she felt 'inadequate' and embarrassed to talk about how she was feeling. John Legend's wife and model Chrissy Teigen revealed she was diagnosed with postnatal depression in December after going into a downward spiral following the birth of her daughter Luna. Gwyneth Paltrow explained she was dogged by postnatal depression after son Moses was born in 2006. Loose Woman Stacey Solomon said she suffered from depression after the birth of her first son Zachary when she was just 18 years old. While her co-host Andrea McLean has also talked about the condition on the programme. Another famous face to talk about her experience is WAG Rebekah Vardy after she gave birth to son Finley with footballer husband Jamie Vardy. Kate Middleton visited Maurice Wohl Clinical Neuroscience Institute at King's College London to discuss postpartum depression with experts. After speaking to scientists, the Duchess reflected on the day; although she has never explicitly claimed to have suffered with it, she said: "There's an expectation you're going to be super happy all the time, and one in four of us aren't." Melanie Hughes, former Miss Wales and Corrie actress tragically passed away in October 2017 due to her heavy drinking, linked to her post natal depression. She then revealed her blooming bump, captioning the clip: "Surprise!" Anne-Marie later revealed how different her second pregnancy had been, sharing that she was no longer a vegetarian. The star said: "The other day I really wanted to eat a steak and I've never eaten steak in my whole life. "I've got gestational diabetes this time, though. "So yeah, that's annoying because I can't eat cereal or bread." Anne-Marie and her baby daddy Slowthai - real name Tyron Kaymone - secretly married in Las Vegas in the summer of 2022. 6 6 6 6 6
