Police arrest 11 men in cockfighting raid
State police chief Datuk Mohd Khairi Khairudin said the suspects, aged between 32 and 56, were engaged in cockfighting behind a house in Kampung Atas Tol, here, when the raid was conducted at about 12.30 pm.
He said the raid was conducted following intelligence gathering by the D7 Branch of the state police with the cooperation of the State Veterinary Services Department.
The police also seized four roosters, a cockfighting bond, RM5,823 and a bag containing needles, thread and red medical bandages, he said.
He said all the suspects tested negative for drugs, and the case is being investigated under Section 7 (2) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953 and Section 32 (1) of the Animal Welfare Act 2015.

KUCHING: The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) uncovered contraband worth over RM10 million in a major crackdown on smuggling activities in Kuching, Sarawak. The operation, conducted yesterday, targeted two storage facilities used to hoard illegal goods. Bukit Aman Internal Security and Public Order Department (KDNKA) director Datuk Seri Azmi Abu Kassim confirmed the arrests of three individuals—two locals and an Indonesian national—aged between 30 and 64. The seized items, valued at RM10,500,028, included large quantities of liquor and cigarettes. The raids, codenamed Op Taring Alpha 1 and Op Taring Alpha 2, were executed with support from the Sarawak Brigade General Operations Force (PGA). At the first location, authorities recovered 648 litres of liquor, 90,000 white cigarettes, 51,200 kretek cigarettes, and a mobile phone. The second raid yielded 4,190,000 white cigarettes, 24,320 kretek cigarettes, a van, and another mobile phone. Azmi highlighted that since January 1 this year, Bukit Aman KDNKA has conducted 155 operations nationwide, leading to 236 arrests and seizures worth RM443.85 million. He urged public cooperation in reporting smuggling activities, stressing their economic and security risks. 'Smuggling activities and the sale of untaxed goods not only impact the nation's revenue, but could also pose a threat to border security if not tackled comprehensively,' said Azmi. - Bernama

Indonesians in Johor bus crash had just landed at KLIA
BATU PAHAT: The bus involved in a pre-dawn crash at KM80.7 of the North-South Expressway (PLUS) was carrying 45 Indonesian plantation workers who had just arrived from Lombok, Indonesia. The Consul of the Consulate-General of the Republic of Indonesia in Johor Baru, Jati Heri Winarto, said that the workers were among a group of 55 from Lombok, Indonesia, who had just landed at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) at around 9pm on Thursday (July 3) and were headed to Johor Baru. He said that upon their arrival from Lombok, Indonesia, 45 workers boarded the bus while 10 others were on a van. "Two victims, identified as Hidirman, 43, and Zulhadi, 44, were pronounced dead at the scene, and another victim identified as Nusiah sustained severe injuries and is still receiving treatment at the emergency unit of Sultanah Nora Ismail Hospital (HSNI). "Meanwhile, 14 other workers who suffered minor injuries and had also received treatment at the same hospital have been discharged and continued their journey to Johor Bahru," he told reporters at the HSNI Forensic Medical Unit here on Thursday. Firemen earlier confirmed that two people had died and 16 were injured in the accident involving a bus and two lorries, which occurred at 12.27am. Jati Heri said that as of 2.30pm, the bodies of both deceased were still undergoing post-mortem examinations while another victim was still receiving further treatment after losing her left hand and fracturing several ribs. The Indonesian Consulate is currently working to arrange the repatriation of the bodies to Lombok and to obtain appropriate compensation, including through the Social Security Organisation (Perkeso). Meanwhile, Batu Pahat police chief ACP Shahrulanuar Mushaddat Abdullah Sani said the bus involved rear-ended a tanker lorry that was being towed by another lorry. "The bus driver sustained injuries to his shoulder, ribs and hand while five other passengers complained of head pain. "The tanker lorry driver, the towing lorry driver and the remaining passengers were not injured," he said. Court declares Jovian Mandagie bankrupt over failure to repay RM5.28 million loan

(Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA: Fashion designer Jovian Mandagie has been declared bankrupt by the High Court in Kuala Lumpur after failing to repay a friendly loan totalling RM5.28 million from a construction company. According to Berita Harian, senior assistant registrar Faisal Zulkifli today allowed a creditor's petition filed by Cekap Air Sdn Bhd. Based on the petition, filed on Nov 20 last year, Jovian, the former son-in-law of ex-prime minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob, failed to comply with a bankruptcy notice dated May 21, 2024. The petition stated that Jovian owed Cekap Air RM5,284,340.66, including interest up to May 21, 2024, following a summary judgment granted by the High Court on April 2 the same year in a civil suit. Cekap Air's lawyer, Siti Nur Athirazatti Rohizad, said the company filed the bankruptcy notice after Jovian failed to comply with the summary judgment issued by the court. 'Jovian filed applications to stay and set aside both the notice and petition, but all were dismissed by the court,' she said. On May 16, 2023, Cekap Air filed a lawsuit against Jovian for allegedly failing to repay the loan, which had been extended as a friendly loan. In its statement of claim, the company said that Jovian was an acquaintance of Cekap Air's director, Yong Zhen Wei. The company claimed it loaned Jovian the funds at his verbal request on Feb 25, 2022, and transferred the money to his law firm's client's account. Jovian's appeal against the summary judgment is scheduled to be heard on Sept 15. Jovian was questioned by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission in its probe into Ismail's asset declaration.
