David Peterson continues to be exception to the rule on Mets staff

Try it free The Mets bullpen was worn out for weeks by an inability by most of the starting staff to work deep into games, necessitating multiple moves before the trade deadline. All-Star lefty David Peterson has been the lone exception to that troubling trend lately, posting the Mets' last seven outings of at least six innings pitched over his past nine appearances. The latest came in the Mets' first game after acquiring three key relief arms after Thursday's deadline, a six-inning quality start in a 4-3 loss in 10 innings Friday night against the Giants at Citi Field. The last Mets starter other than Peterson to work at least six innings was Clay Holmes on June 7 against the Rockies nearly eight weeks ago. David Peterson gave the Mets another solid start on Friday night. JASON SZENES/ NY POST 'I think it's a focus for all of us. Everyone is going out there trying to give our best for the team,' Peterson said after the game. 'Baseball's gonna work out the way it does, but I think it's an emphasis for me to try to get as deep as I can, to get through six-plus and hand it off to the revamped and loaded bullpen. 'So it's definitely a huge thing for me to try to get as deep as I can.' Peterson allowed two earned runs in the second inning on an RBI double by Casey Schmitt and an infield out by Jung Hoo Lee, but none over the next four frames until the Giants made it 3-0 against reliever Ryne Stanek in the seventh. New York Mets pitcher David Peterson (23) reacts to giving up two runs during the second inning on Friday night. Robert Sabo for NY Post But Peterson succeeded in keeping the Mets close enough until they were able to mount a comeback with three runs in the seventh and eighth to force extra innings before falling short in the 10th. 'I felt good about it. I wish I would have left the game in a different spot,' said Peterson, whose ERA for the season remained 2.83. 'They had a little bit of room, but our offense was able to come back and tie it up. So I felt good about it, but I think there are some things to go back and work on for the next one.' With 127 innings pitched over his 21 starts, the 29-year-old lefty already has exceeded his previous career best of 121 innings from one year ago. 'Just in terms of being able to add more innings year over year, I think the goal is to make every start and go as deep as I can, and where we end up numbers-wise, we end up,' Peterson said. 'Being able to have a healthy season last year, I'm trying to build off that and be available every five days.'

Doyle hits walkoff homer in 9th, Rockies overcome 9-run 1st-inning deficit to beat Pirates 17-16

DENVER (AP) — Brenton Doyle hit a walkoff, two-run homer in a five-run ninth inning and the Colorado Rockies overcame a nine-run first-inning deficit to beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 17-16 on Friday night. The Rockies are the sixth team in major league history to win after surrendering nine first-inning runs according to Elias Sports Bureau. Cleveland was the last to do it in 2006. Colorado trailed 16-12 before rallying off Dennis Santana (3-3). Hunter Goodman hit his 20th homer with one out. Jordan Beck walked and scored on rookie Warming Bernabel's first triple. Thairo Estrada had an RBI single, and Doyle hit his eighth home run with one out to win it. Bernabel went 4 for 6 and hit his third homer for the Rockies — a three-run shot in the third to cut it to 9-4. Ezequiel Tovar went 4 for 6 and tied a major league record with four doubles. Doyle also finished with four of Colorado's 22 hits. Rookie Yanquiel Fernández hit his first homer — a two-run shot off Yohan Ramírez in the eighth to get the Rockies within four. Oneil Cruz hit his 18th homer and second career grand slam and Andrew McCutchen added a three-run shot — his 11th — off Antonio Senzatela as the Pirates became just the second team in 132 years to score nine-plus runs in the first inning on 10-plus hits that included a slam and a three-run homer. Cincinnati did it against the Louisville Colonels on June 18, 1893. McCutchen finished 3 for 5 with five RBIs. Reynolds had three of Pittsburgh's 18 hits and singled from both sides of the plate in the first — the first Pirate to do so since Neil Walker in 2015, also in Denver. Nick Gonzales finished 4 for 6 and Isiah Kiner-Falefa had three hits and three RBIs. Andrew Heaney lasted just 3 1/3 innings for Pittsburgh, allowing four runs — three earned — on seven hits. Rookie Dugan Darnell (1-0) pitched two scoreless innings for his first win. Key moment McCutchen's homer moved him past Bill Mazeroski into sixth place on the Pirates' RBIs list with 857. Key stat Colorado is the third team in the divisional era (since 1969) to win after trailing by nine runs. Up next Pirates RHP Paul Skenes (6-8, 1.83 ERA) was set to start Saturday opposite Rockies LHP Austin Gomber (0-5, 6.28). ___ AP MLB:

Ice hockey fans, players excited for World Juniors tournament coming to Minnesota

Minnesota hockey fans get an extra gift this holiday season. The World Juniors is coming to the state of hockey. "Like no other," described defenseman Logan Hensler. "Happens once a year. It's always on TV. People are always watching, talking about it. There's a ton of attention to it. It's a pretty cool experience." Hensler has been there before. The defenseman from Woodbury took gold last January. Now, he's trying to repeat as a large, talented group tangle for a roster spot on Team USA. "Your compete, your discipline. All around play. You get pushed every day by these guys," said Hensler. "It's just important you keep up and keep going. Push through." Hensler's last few months have been his most accomplished in hockey. He won the most recent World Juniors gold and was then selected 23rd overall by the Ottawa Senators in the NHL draft in June. "Dream come true," remembered Hensler. "Got there, it was a great experience. The moment I got picked was kind of a blur. Kind of a blackout moment. Really special. Great organization. Just happy my family was there to witness it." Hensler, the top Minnesotan selected in 2025, will be a sophomore with the Badgers this winter. But it might not be long before he trades red and white for Ottawa's colors. "This next coming year I'm going back to Wisconsin," said Hensler. "A big thing for me is taking it year by year. Just gonna take this year, see how it goes. See how I grow as a player. I think it'll be a lot of growing. So it'll be fun." Note: The above video first aired on Jan. 5, 2025.
