NDTV25-06-2025
Multi-layered and in-depth security arrangements have been put in place for the upcoming annual Amarnath Yatra to ensure safe and smooth pilgrimage, Kashmir Police chief V K Birdi said on Wednesday.
"The Shri Amarnath Yatra this year is starting next week. Jammu-Kashmir Police and other security forces have made all security arrangements for the yatra. Compared to last year, this time there are multi-layered and in-depth security arrangements so as to make the yatra safe and smooth," the inspector general of Kashmir Police told reporters in Anantnag.
Mr Birdi visited the Nunwan base camp of the yatra along the Pahalgam axis and reviewed the security arrangements for the pilgrimage which starts July 3.
The IGP said the security arrangements for the 38-day pilgrimage have been divided into different levels, including zonal, and security drills were held at every level on Wednesday ahead of the yatra.
"The aim of the drills is to refine our alertness, and preparedness of our actions and responses at the time of any contingency. Such drills were conducted at every place like camps, roads or interior sections along the yatra routes so that all the security forces remain alert and know what specific tasks they have to carry out to fight any contingency," he added.
Asked about the local support to the yatra, Mr Birdi said the yatra cannot be conducted without the support of the local population.
"They become successful due to the help and support by the locals. This time also, the people are excited to welcome the yatris and provide them any possible help," the IGP said.
Meanwhile, security forces conducted drills at Pahalgam, Anantnag, and Qazigund" in south Kashmir; Pantha Chowk in Srinagar, and Sumbal in north Kahsmir's Bandipora district.

Amarnath Yatra: Fresh batch of 3,536 pilgrims leaves Jammu base camp

Jammu, July 22 (UNI) A fresh batch of 3,536 pilgrims left the Bhagwati Nagar base camp in Jammu today to offer prayers at the 3,880-metre-high holy cave shrine of Amarnath in the South Kashmir Himalayas, officials said. 'A fresh batch of 3,536 pilgrims this morning left for the Shri Amarnath Yatra cave shrine in Kashmir from the Jammu base camp amid tight security arrangements,' they added. The pilgrims were escorted by security forces to ensure a safe and smooth passage. Of the total pilgrims, 2,286 have taken the traditional Pahalgam route, while 1,250 opted for the shorter but steeper Baltal route. The group is travelling in a fleet of 132 vehicles, including both light and heavy motor vehicles. The 38-day annual yatra commenced on July 2 from the twin routes of Nunwan–Pahalgam in Anantnag and Baltal in Ganderbal, and is scheduled to conclude on August 9. According to official data, over three lakh pilgrims have so offered prayers at the cave shrine, located at an altitude of 3,888 metres, making this year's yatra one of the most attended in recent times. The Amarnath Yatra, a pilgrimage to the Amarnath cave shrine in Jammu and Kashmir, is traditionally held during the Hindu month of Shravan (Sawan). UNI VBH AAB

Amarnath Yatra 2025 Sees Massive Turnout: Over 3.21 Lakh Pilgrims Complete Darshan Amid Tight Security

Over 3.21 lakh devotees have undertaken the ongoing Amarnath Yatra in the last 19 days since it commenced on July 3, as another batch of 3,536 pilgrims left Jammu for Kashmir on Tuesday. Officials said, 'A fresh batch of 3,536 Yatris left Bhagwati Nagar Yatri Niwas in Jammu today in two escorted convoys for the Valley. The first convoy of 48 vehicles carrying 1,250 Yatris left at 3.33 a.m. for Baltal base camp, while the second convoy of 84 vehicles carrying 2,286 Yatris left at 4.06 a.m. for Pahalgam base camp." 'There is a huge rush of yatris as thousands of pilgrims daily report from different parts of the country at twin base camps to undertake the Yatra,' the officials said. Bhumi Pujan of 'Chhari Mubarak' (Lord Shiva's Holy) was performed at Pahalgam on July 10. The Chhari Mubarak was taken to Pahalgam by a group of seers led by the sole custodian of the Chhari Mubarak, Mahant Swami Deependra Giri, from its seat at the Dashnami Akhara Building in Srinagar to Pahalgam. In Pahalgam, the Chhari Mubarak was taken to the Gauri Shankar temple, where the Bhumi Pujan was held. The Chhari Mubarak was then taken back to its seat at the Dashnami Akhara building. It will start its final journey towards the cave shrine from Dashnami Akhara temple in Srinagar on August 4 and will reach the holy cave shrine on August 9, marking the official conclusion of the Yatra. Authorities have made extensive multi-tier security arrangements for this year's Amarnath Yatra, as this takes place after the cowardly attack of April 22 in which Pakistan-backed terrorists killed 26 civilians after segregating them based on faith in the Baisaran meadow of Pahalgam. Additional 180 companies of CAPFs have been brought in to augment the existing strength of the Army, BSF, CRPF, SSB and the local police. The Army has deployed over 8,000 special commandos to secure the passage of the pilgrims this year. Yatra started on July 3 and will end after 38 days on August 9, coinciding with Shravan Purnima and Raksha Bandhan. Yatris approach the holy cave shrine situated 3888 metres above sea level in the Kashmir Himalayas either from the traditional Pahalgam route or the shorter Baltal route. Those using the Pahalgam route pass through Chandanwari, Sheshnag and Panchtarni to reach the cave shrine, covering a distance of 46 km on foot. This trek takes a pilgrim four days to get to the cave shrine. And, those using the shorter Baltal route have to trek 14 km to reach the cave shrine and return to the base camp the same day after having darshan. No helicopter services are available to Yatris this year due to security reasons. The cave shrine houses an ice stalagmite structure that wanes and waxes with the phases of the moon. Devotees believe that the ice stalagmite structure symbolises the mythical powers of Lord Shiva.

Baisaran likely to reopen after Amarnath Yatra, security nod

SRINAGAR: The tourist resort, Pahalgam's Baisaran Valley, also known as 'Mini Switzerland' and which was closed after the April 22 terror attack, is likely to be reopened after a security review following the conclusion of the Amarnath Yatra, J&K Lt. Governor Manoj Sinha has said. The 38-day Amarnath yatra will conclude on August 9, coinciding with Raksha Bandhan. Diverse security agencies will review the situation thereafter. Sources said, 'Only after a green signal from the security agencies, the tourist destination would again be thrown open for the locals and tourists'. They stated, 'The security arrangements in and around the Baisaran Valley, which is surrounded by thick forests, will be strengthened with the deployment of security personnel and round-the-clock surveillance of the tourist destination through drones, UAVs and other surveillance equipment.' There was no security in Baisaran Valley when the militant attack took place. The authorities subsequently closed the Baisaran tourist spot to undertake a security audit. Additionally, 48 other tourist destinations in the Valley were also closed, and eight of them reopened after the audit.
