Newcastle coach looks forward to sharing 'great moment' with Son in likely Tottenham finale
The match at Seoul World Cup Stadium at 8 p.m. Sunday could be Son's final one with the North London club, and Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe said on the eve of the match that he was looking forward to being part of it all.
I think he's one of the legends of the Premier League," Howe said at his prematch press conference in Seoul on Saturday. "I've never spent time with him, but he seems like an incredible professional and an incredible person. So it'll be a really great moment to share his last game for Tottenham against us, and hopefully, it's a memorable occasion for him."
Before managing Newcastle, Howe also coached AFC Bournemouth in the Premier League early in Son's England career, which started in 2015.
"We've come up against him many times. I thought he was fantastic," Howe said. "His pace, dribbling ability, desire to score goals ... I thought he was always one of the best players we've played against every season. The biggest test, I think, for a player's ability is consistency and longevity, and he's been able to do that consistently every year."
Accompanying Howe to the presser, Newcastle's new South Korean player, Park Seung-soo, said he watched Son's announcement earlier Saturday, and he respected the veteran's decision.
"I am sure it must not have been an easy decision," Park said. "And since tomorrow could really be his final match with Tottenham, I'd love to swap shirts with him."
Newcastle fell to Team K League, a squad of South Korean league All-Stars, 1-0 at Suwon World Cup Stadium in Suwon, about 30 kilometers south of Seoul, on Wednesday.
Now the reigning English Football League Cup champs will try to end their three-match losing skid in the preseason against the UEFA Europa League winners.
"I think it should be a really good game, two high-quality teams on show," Howe said. "We're hoping to build up performance levels as we go through preseason, so we're hoping for a really good performance."
Newcastle's two matches here are part of the annual Coupang Play Series, which has been bringing European clubs for preseason friendlies in South Korea since 2022. This is Newcastle's first trip to South Korea and Tottenham's third. (Yonhap)

Son Heung-min to start final match with Tottenham in S. Korea
Son Heung-min will start Sunday's preseason match for Tottenham Hotspur in what will be his final appearance for the Premier League club in his native South Korea. Son drew into the starting lineup against Newcastle United for an 8 p.m. kickoff at Seoul World Cup Stadium, a day after announcing he will leave Tottenham this summer. During his prematch presser Saturday, Son declined to specify exactly when he will leave or which team he will join next. In the starting XI, Son will be joined by goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky; defenders Kevin Danso, Cristian Romero, Pedro Porro and Ben Davies; midfielders Archie Gray, Pape Sarr, Rodrigo Bentancur; and forwards Mathys Tel and Brennan Johnson. Tottenham's one other South Korean player, Yang Min-hyeok, will be on the bench at the start. Newcastle will counter with: goalkeeper Nick Pope; defenders Kieran Trippier, Fabian Schar, Matt Targett and Dan Burn; midfielders Joelinton, Bruno Guimaraes and Lewis Miley; and forwards Anthony Gordon, Harvey Barnes and Jacob Murphy. It wasn't clear if Son will be around to play the next two matches for Tottenham before the start of the new Premier League season on Aug. 15. Tottenham's next preseason match will be in Germany against Bayern Munich on Thursday. Kim A-lim 1 off lead at LPGA major entering final round
Kim A-lim is one stroke off the lead heading into the final round of the last LPGA major tournament of the season. The South Korean went five-under 67 in the third round of the AIG Women's Open at Royal Porthcawl Golf Club in Porthcawl, Wales, on Saturday (local time), reaching eight-under for the tournament. The bogey-free round put Kim alone in second place, one shot behind Miyu Yamashita of Japan. At the start of the third round, Kim was eight strokes back of Yamashita, who was leading the way at 11-under after going 68-65 over her first two days with just two bogeys combined. But Kim nearly caught her by draining five birdies for her first bogey-free round at a major tournament this season, while Yamashita made only two birdies against four bogeys. Kim drained a birdie putt from about 23 feet on the first hole and made another birdie attempt from long distance on the fifth hole. She nearly made an eagle at the par-5 13th, where she grabbed the fifth and final birdie of her round. Kim sent her tee shot into the rough on the par-3 15th but saved par there. Kim won the season-opening tournament, Hilton Grand Vacations Tournament of Champions, in February. The 19 LPGA tournaments so far in 2025 have produced different champions -- the longest such streak in tour history -- and Kim will now try to become the first multiple winner of this season. Kim, who won the 2020 U.S. Women's Open as a nonmember, is pursuing her second career major title and her fourth LPGA victory overall. The last South Korean player to win an LPGA major is Amy Yang, who claimed the KPMG Women's PGA Championship title in June 2024. And Yang was the first one from the country to win a big one in two years. Kim, who missed six out of 14 fairways but hit 16 greens in regulation, said she tried to focus on hitting low shots in windy conditions. "I honestly don't remember how I played this round," Kim said with a smile. "I just gave my best on each and every hole." When asked what the best part of her game was during the third round, Kim replied, "Trajectory control." "My caddie and I focused on ball flight," she said. "Ball control is more important this week. Throughout my LPGA career, I've been trying to figure out how to play well in the wind and control my shots in every possible situation. I feel that I've been improving every year, and that's what makes it more fun." Though she has put some pressure on Yamashita and reached the cusp of her second major title, Kim said she will stay locked in on her own game. "Honestly, I'm not focused on the leader," the 29-year-old said. "I focus on my process and my shot and then my position. That's all." Kim has made $698,788 so far this season, and a victory in Wales will net her $1,462,500 and vault her into the top 10 on the money list.
